Spruce San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
Ate here for lunch the other week.
Everything tasted as amazing as it looked. Staff were very attentive. We even got a few complimentary bites which were delicious.

I brought a client here for lunch and had an okay clam chowder soup and a delicious scallop dish. We finished lunch at 1:30 as they start closing down to prepare for dinner. I left my First Republican Bank umbrella and a navy cashmere sweater n the floor under my chair, which I didn't realize until the next day. When my called for assistance the hostess said she hadn't seen it . I called back, asked for the Mananger, whom I spoke to and he told me he would check with the cleaning crew and staff but then he failed to follow-up. I emailed them to see it my belongings were found and still haven't heard back. When you pay $200 for a lunch for two people, you expect better service. I won't be back.
We did not enjoy our meal at spruce.
My biggest complaint is about the service. While everyone was young and well attired and engaging, it seemed like someone was coming to our table every few minutes to bring food items or drinks or to obtain some feedback. While this might be an attempt to be "attentive" and informative about the food, the frequency and the pace of the interruptions were VERY FREQUENT and quite annoying. The servers never paused to respect the attempts my guest and I were making to have a pleasant conversation. We felt very rushed and it also seemed a bit intrusive (and unnecessary). I would suggest that they either slow things down quite substantially, or resign themselves to giving less information...maybe both. My second biggest complaint would be about the food. It was merely good. The menu descriptions sounded interesting (and our waiter used superlatives to describe the food), but nothing that came to our table was not particularly interesting (with the possible exception of the bread and the wine that we had), let alone reaching the heights of "memorable" or "delicious". With all the truly outstanding restaurants in SF, I would never choose to return here and pay the prices they are asking for the food they serve. There are MUCH better meals to be had elsewhere...often for less money. My third complaint is about the music: often loud, varying in volume quite a bit from song to song. Another annoyance/distraction. The decor is appealing, and I really thought we were in for a treat when we first entered and were seated. But Spruce did not deliver beyond the first impression. In sum, I would describe Spruce as a decidedly disappointing restaurant, with the overall impression earning the pejorative descriptor "pretentious".
We are huge fans.
Have eaten there several times and service is always warm, welcoming and professional. We also ordered our Thanksgiving meal to-go and months later are still talking about their gravy. Their oatmeal cookie and cannoli are the best in the city.
Oh my gatos .
This place is so ridiculously good. I need two of them in socal. Preferably both in my neighborhood. Absolutely love when these epic restaurants have long hours and are open for lunch. NOT ALL OF US ARE. INTERMITTENT FASTING and only have a 4 hour eating window. Sheesh. Anyways. Service 10/10 Food 10/10 Vibe 10/10 Ambiance 10/10 I don't have complaints about anything I put in my mouth. . This joint exceeded my expectations. Bone Apple Tea

A very special place with terrific ambiance, food and service! checks all my boxes when I want to treat myself out or go with friends who want to splurge with me! I don't go as often as I'd like as a bit far from home but it's a great treat when I take the time to come out. Love this place! And they have a great bar area with lounge tables if you don't want to get a table. You won't be disappointed here at all.
We can't for the second time for our anniversary and again
We can't for the second time for our anniversary and again the hit it out of the park!!! The soups were divine, filet cooked to perfection, sea bass excellent! We also got the Lobster pasta and it was absolutely divine!!! Dessert was light and delicious! Need a change of cocktails same as before but still tasty!!!! BRAVO!!!!!

I was really excited to try the so called famous burger at the Spruce after watching so many videos of it on social media. We were able to walk in and get bar seating which was great. However, when we took the first bite of our burger, it was so underwhelming. The beef tasted gamey (it almost tasted like there was liver in the beef). The english muffin buns had no flavor and it was chewy. We ordered mushrooms and carmelized onions as toppings and they were also disappointing. The mushrooms had some flavor but the onions got lost in the background. When we put in all of the toppings in the burger, we couldn't even close it, let alone, bite it without everything falling out. After paying for a $30+ burger, I'm not sure if I'll be coming back. As a foody, it was such a disappointing experience! I gave an extra star because the service was good and the space was cute.

Spruce is our "go-to" San Francisco restaurant, both when we lived in SF and now anytime we have an opportunity to travel up north. The place is always hopping, both at the bar and in the main dining room. The waitstaff know the menu cold and have helped us decide among enticing options. I love the sliced duck breast - absolute favorite. You will not regret eating at Spruce!
TLDR: THIS is fine dining.
We just celebrated a birthday lunch here today and the experience was so wonderful that we're already planning our next visit back. The food was unique and complicated -- but not too complicated that it detracted from the taste like food can at other restaurants. The interior is absolutely stunning. Most importantly, their service was exceptional, and they know how to celebrate a birthday (or anniversary or anything else). There are 5 types of dining experiences at Spruce: 1) Dinner - 3 course meal (likely with the addition of a small amuse bouche before and petit four after) for $115 / person 2) Brunch on the weekend - 3 course meal (+ amuse bouche + petit four) for $98 / person 3) Lunch on a weekday - 2 course meal (+ amuse bouche + petit four) for $65 / person 4) A la carte bar and lounge experience with a slightly different menu 5) No one seems to talk about this but there's a little cafe / bakery next door where they sell their HUGE cookies and I bet their famous beignets and other desserts too. ------ FOOD: We came for the 2 course lunch during the week (MLK day, so we had Monday off) and I thought our two courses was definitely enough food for each of us, though we did also order a supplemental course ahead of time: FIRST COURSE: 1) [MUST TRY] Roasted Sunchoke Veloute (5/5) - This is a thick, creamy soup with super unique flavors that just warmed my soul. They presented bread service right before this was served, so I could use pieces of sourdough as a vessel to enjoy some of the buttery soup 2) Provencal Soupe au Pistou (5/5) - The other soup on the menu and another creamy soup. However instead of having a deep, buttery taste, it had a nice acidity. The beans paired nicely with the soup, and the croutons were super crunchy and not soggy at all. ENTREE: 1) [MUST TRY] Prime Petite Filet Mignon (5/5) - One of the best steaks I've had in a while. This filet mignon surprised both me and my boyfriend because of how tender, evenly cooked, and flavorful it was. Usually steaks are too chewy for my liking (even a recent cut of A5 wagyu at another restaurant didn't impress me) but this was what I want whenever I order a steak. We were also easily able to sub the fries for extra veggies, which we really appreciated! 2) Seared Ahi Tuna Salade Nicoise (4.5/5) - A delicious, healthy option that is still extremely flavorful. The 7-minute egg was cooked perfectly and was the perfect fatty touch paired with the strong, biting taste of the olive spread. I thought the spread was a little overpowering and took away from the taste of the tuna a bit, but this dish was still wonderful 3) Duck Leg Confit (4/5) - Super tender duck that fell off the bone and paired beautifully with the dish's sauce and accompanying veggies. I found this to be a little too salty for my liking which is why the 4, but had it been less so, I would have absolutely loved this. Turnips have recently become a favorite addition to my dishes recently, so I was elated to see turnips with this duck! OTHER: * They started the meal with a delicious amuse bouche - a mushroom and cheese puff. * There was also 1 thick slice of sourdough bread served to each of us before our first course. It wasn't my favorite because it wasn't warm and didn't have a crispy crust. * They came out with a birthday dessert at the end which was this luxurious, decadent chocolate hazelnut cake. It was so creamy and texturally complex -- it was such a nice birthday gift from the restaurant. * Finally, the petit four were fantastic chocolate passion fruit bonbons ------ SERVICE: * SERVICE - Wonderful service. Our waiter was extremely kind and thorough. Servers were always coming by to clear our plates, and I thought the pace of the meal was excellent. I do wish they cleared crumbs from the table between courses * CELEBRATION - We we're celebrating my bf's birthday and Spruce really knows how to celebrate a birthday. Not only were there many "happy birthdays" by various folks, but there was also a nice birthday card at the table and after we asked for the check, they surprised us with an extra birthday dessert and candle. That was as delicious as it was beautiful. This place just knows how to celebrate, and I will be coming back for future celebrations. ------ ENVIRONMENT/AMBIANCE: * INTERIOR - One of the most beautiful, contemporary, yet cozy dining spaces in SF. There's really nice natural light from skylights above, and the dark brown walls and furniture add a chocolatey warmth that levels up the space. Plus the expertly placed glass panes and mirrors give you the perfect vantage of their gorgeous bar * BAR - I would love to come some day and just get a drink + a bite (likely their famous burger) at this bar with a friend. They've sorted the bottles in various clusters of bright colors accentuated by shelve lights behind them. * PARKING - There is lots of parking around this area with newer parking meters
Deeply disappointing compared to two years ago
We had brunch here two years ago and loved it, and thought it was good value, too. Now, not content with raising the basic price by 25%, they have started nickel-and-diming at every possible point. This time they didn't mention tap water nor did they say that water was 9.50 a bottle (add 25% for tax and tip), so we wound up paying $40 for water! Champagne seemed to be provided only when we failed to order something more profitable, but the glass was filled only to halfway, or around 60ml. We had a child with us, who was paying full price (unlike last time), who was 'offered' a kiddie cocktail instead of the champagne--at $8 (plus tax and tip). The food was still very good, but having enquired about food requirements the day before, no attention was paid on the day to the need for a sesame-free meal for one (whose appetizer appeared on sesame bread!) or low sodium for another (the omelette was anything but low sodium, but could easily have been adapted). Some portions, e.g. the apple dessert, were very small. We left feeling very let down and will not be visiting again.
Excellent spot, but out of control waiter spoiled the experience
Consistently excellent food. High end atmosphere. Unfortunately, our waiter ran through the menu at breakneck speed and wouldn’t pause to take a question. When I asked him to slow down, he complained that he had a lot of tables to wait. For those prices plus a 20% service charge off the top, I expect a comfortable server with a relaxing atmosphere rather than an overworked manic waiter stressing us out, and who should know better than to complain about how he was overworked to clients paying nosebleed prices.
superbly crafted food
wonderful in every way, Food delicious and well prepared, wine service was sophisticated but not obnoxious, and ambience was elegant and reserved. Will become my favorite restaurant in SF
Lovely, elegant restaurant in Presidio Heights
This is my favorite upscale special occasion restaurant in San Francisco. I love it bc it has brown velvet booths, stunning decor but it still serves french fries and beignets. I've had all my special birthdays here and it never disappoints. Also the location in Presidio Heights is just another reason to dine here.
Wonderful food and service, but the upselling of menu items is a negative
Excellent food and great service in a decidedly upscale and intimate environment. But the upsetting and cross selling of menu items is a turn off. It's almost like buying an already expensive car and then the dealer pushing an array of options that you already thought were included in the price
Good food but unusual upsell structure of mu
The food and ambiance were very good. The kitchen staff know how to prepare the dishes well. However, the menu is structured in such a way that the wait staff try to upsell the customer on so many different components. It's not just about paying extra for caviar service, which is to be expected, but multiple components of a regular prix fix meal are add-ons (i.e. standard scallop appetizer comes with 3 scallops but it's $12 extra - and not clearly communicated; if you want a better cut of meat for your steak it's $XX; if you want a cheese course instead of dessert it's $15; etc.). Not talking about one or two add ons - there are multiple. So many in fact that it's hard to keep track of. Even the waitress who was serving us admitted it was too many and admitted that the restaurant is trying to change. For the customer, it's not a great experience.
Good, but service (especially wine service) needs attention
So excited to go to Spruce for the first time with friends - we are all in the food/wine industry, so admittedly expectations were high. Service was sub-par but not for lack of effort--our server was spread way too thin and had too many tables. We waited a long, long time to order our first bottle of champagne--then the first course didn't arrive till it was almost gone. Second bottle of wine did not get served at the time we requested, and so pairing with our food was off...Then our dessert wines had the same problem (ordered but not delivered for a long time). The som recognized this and comp'd them. Food was good, but wow-factor was missing. Highlights were lobster, scallops, parker rolls, and rhubarb choux. I would skip the rib-eye. Hope management finds a way to improve wine service in this very busy restaurant to avoid customer disappointment and live up to its Michelin rating. There are LOTS of staff, but they should be better managed.

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
