Very limited menu.
Nice indoor and covered backyard eating area. Service was nice, friendly and efficient. Just wish they had more of a menu because there was literally only one thing for me to eat and I left starving,

Steak was too chewy, service was terrible. Dont think I can go here any more.

Brick-walled institution in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn serving up spectacular steak and seafood. Incredible old world ambience and can't say enough of their impeccable service. Overall just an incredible spot to dine in. St. Anselm is most famously known for their signature Angus Butcher's Steak so if it's your first visit, this is the absolute must on the menu.

The cooks table was great - got to see how busy they were and how they handle it. Butcher cut was amazing- highly recommend it. The prawn was perfect as was the wedge salad & bleu and the pan fried potato is more than enough to share. Restaurant has a nice cozy and settled feel. Went to celebrate my son's 16th birthday and Gabe our waiter was the best you could ask for. He made us feel welcomed, and ensured my son had a night to remember- the chocolate mouse was out of this world. I would drive from Buffalo there again to just eat there!!!
Be the first to ReplyTLDR: A great steakhouse at an affordable price.
We started out with the garlic steak, and at 34 dollars per person this was an amazing deal. I recommend getting the peppercorn sauce on the side, as well as the mashed potatoes. If you have any space for dessert- the cheesecake is a must!

A group of friends and I decided to stop by here for lunch on a Sunday - we had reservations for 12 pm and they were really nice about us being late (we did call in advance to let them know that we will likely be late). For the weekends - they do have special items on the lunch menu which we appreciate. The menu itself is not too big; focusing on a few key items. They are a wine and beer place so if you are a cocktail fan this likely isn't the place for you. It was very rustic vibes with really nice staff. The majority of us got the steak and eggs which was absolutely delicious. The meat was super tender and the potatos were nicely seasoned. For sides we got the Spinach Gratin which was nice and creamy and also the pan fried mash potatos which were also delicious - so crispy and hot. For dessert we all got the affogato - they used regular ice cream instead of gelato but it was still delicious nontheless. Overall good food and really nice staff here; would recommend checking this place out if you are in the neighborhood and in the mood for steak!

Took myself on a solo date and ordered way to much but would do it ALL AGAIN! No regrets. As I sat at the bar dining alone, I took some notes of my experience in the moment and have copied them below for you to enjoy: - Berkshire pork: perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The right cut of meat with just enough fat that literally melts in your mouth - Avocado & orange salad: the perfect non lettuce based salad to break up your heavy meat meal. Citrusy, light but balanced - Butcher steak: perfectly cooked, well seasoned and delicious with every bite - Pan mashed potatoes: steaming the entire meal, the perfect amount of garlic that isn't overkill - Wine: light and slightly sweet, paired well with everything and didn't kill my wallet at $13 a glass - Pot de crรจme- dusted with salt to counter balance the sweetness. Staff recommended and totally the perfect way to end the meal - Casual, relaxed Brooklyn vibe. Intimate but not stuffy or claustrophobic. The type of place that everyone in the open style kitchen wears a ball cap and has a mustache. You trust they know how to fire a steak or change the tire in your bicycle This was a killer meal and the service was awesome and just friendly enough. I could rave about this place and highly recommend you make a visit yourself. 4.9/5
Be the first to ReplySolid steak with good neighborhood vibes.
Reasonably priced. The sides could be improved or more flavorful.
Be the first to Reply+.5 for service A recent search for off the beaten path
+.5 for service A recent search for off the beaten path steakhouses showed this result in Williamsburg. The reviews looked good, so my family decided to give this place a try during our most recent NYC trip. Ambience is kinda dark and screams hip. Feels more like a local hangout dinner spot as opposed to an institution wanting to achieve Michelin stars. My dad wasn't hungry, so we opted to share two steaks: the NY strip steak and the butcher's steak. We also added an order of coutneck clams. The butcher's steak was the best steak-price ratio I've had in a long time! For $34 you get a nice angus beef quality steak of decent size. I actually found the butcher's steak to be better than the NY strip, but that's my opinion. The clams were average, nothing too crazy in terms of taste and what was added inside. Service was excellent here. Was it the best steakhouse I've been to in NYC? That may be pushing it a bit, but that $34 butcher's steak is easily the best steak deal one can have, and I'd totally come back just for that.
Be the first to ReplyBest hanger steak I've ever had hands down.
Their take on a lot of dishes was unique and tasty: - grilled kale caesar salad that gave the salad a bit of char flavor and softened the normally tough texture of kale, then topped with anchovies, - pan fried mashed potatoes that were crispy on the outside and still very fluffy mash underneath, - apple cake a la mode which was a nice spongy bready cake version of an apple pie Other good dishes but not necessarily noteworthy were the grilled scallions and clams. Star of the show was definitely the perfectly cooked juicy hanger steak. Would recommend overall as a date spot, though service was ok, just not that friendly or inviting.
Be the first to ReplyHad a truly wonderful meal/experience at St.
Anselm last night. We had NY strip steaks (done to medium rare perfection), iceberg lettuce with warm bleu cheese and bacon dressing, grilled calicots (leeks), and the pan fried mashed potatoes. A beautiful wine from their list (Granite 30 Cornas) rounded it out. We loved everything, and the service was impeccable. Our server volunteered to decant the wine after I worried aloud about the wine being too young & tight, and it made all the difference. I would come back here in a heartbeat! We sat at the bar overlooking the chef's station, so we saw the careful precision the chef & staff exercised - and it was impressive. If you are in the mood for a fantastic steak dinner, I highly recommend.

Been here on 3 occasions already to try the various dishes and not a single one disappointed. Actually mind blown by how each dish outshone the last. 1/ Hanger Steak - ate 2x 2/ Pork Chop - personally not a pork chop fan EVER! This blew me out of the water, it was juicy & tender topped with their incredible glaze 3/ Whole Trout - just WOW4/ Sticky Toffee Cake - perfection; we were the last people and the chef was still delighted to prepare this for us and the ice cream Service has been too notch every time! Definitely seat yourself at the Chef's table. It's incredible to see the chefs at their finest moments and observe how they cook these items to perfection!

I first went here ~5-7 years ago and was incredibly impressed however never wrote a review. My most recent outing on a Sunday at 4 pm with reservations was rather underwhelming. We were seated promptly at the counter, which was neat as we could view the chef making most of the dishes. The service was on point as well as they balanced checking in on us without being an annoyance. We both ordered the Butcher's Steak ($29) medium rare along with, winter Radish salad ($9), grilled blue point oysters ($16 for 4) and Charred brussels sprouts maple. The steak came out medium rare as expected but wasn't all that satisfying either due to lack of flavor and/or size. I was even more disappointed by the oysters. I am used to grilled oysters coming out a bit hotter than room temperature and a sauce that compliments that cooking method. Instead, I believe it was served with a traditional vinaigrette and tasted bland. If you've never had grilled oysters at Taylors' Shellfish farm I highly recommend them. The sprouts were overly sweet and overcooked to the point they were mushy. The star of the meal was the salad. Perhaps if the price point was a bit cheaper I'd bump this up to three stars but I likely won't venture back for another 5-7 years.
Be the first to ReplyThis steakhouse is more than a steakhouse.
The butcher's steak is what everyone talks about and it is very good, especially for value, which St. Anselm's offers throughout its menu. The London chop lamb offered by the ounce is superior in my opinion. I have ordered it each time I visited and will return for it again and again. The menu changes, but the whole free range chicken, if offered again, is very good, particularly if one is accustomed to true free range meat and poultry or if one appreciates and likes a gamey taste. If you see the salmon steak offered, order it and ask yourself if you have ever had grilled salmon on par...I can think of only one place as good or better, but you gotta go to Fort Worth, Texas, believe it or not, to get it. Salmon is the sleeper here. The brined pork chop is also very good, but the salmon and London chop lamb are the stars here for me. The spinach gratin and pan fried mashed potatoes are excellent as is the fennel. Don't sleep on the sides. The chefs are paying attention to the sides and so should you. The open kitchen is confidence inspiring and you will be pleased. Service is great when I have visited and the music is really good. It's not a stuffy place and you can let your hair down, even groove with the music and not feel out of place. I give this four stars for a steakhouse and five for a non steakhouse, so four and a half. Come and enjoy one of the top quality restaurants and highest quality of any genre in all the boroughs.

Got the wedge salad to start butcher steak spinach and potatoes. Everything was 10/10. Finished with the pineapple upside down cake which was also fantastic. The white on tap was a good value. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyOne of favorite spots in the neighborhood.
They have been around forever and are consistently solid with a great staff. Go for the Ax Handle Ribeye!
Be the first to ReplyHonestly, one of the best steaks I've ever had.
It was so good that I only ate half of it so I could have more when I got home and revisit this steak.

No. Just No. Yelp failed me this time. Could have, should have, walked in the city for a better meal instead of wasting a round trip cab money to Brooklyn. The "highly recommended" hanger steak is a sad looking overpriced Carne Asada on a plate that came with nothing else. The fish ? Multiple bones and scales on the filet. This is the part where Gordon Ramsey smashes the filet with his hand and throws it at the cook. BTW, we are still charged for the mangled fish. Country hipster environment, over priced, over hyped. Just no.

We planned a last minute dinner but when we arrived they were full as we scrambled to find something else, the guy mentioned they had some outdoor seating but wasn't available till after 730, we took it & waited next door at their sister bar they even came to get us when it was time which we appreciated since the time past us as we were enjoying some drinks. We were celebrating our friends bday we got the Vestini Campagnano wine as recommended by our waiter, Great choice wine was great & went well w our food. Appetizer to start the Flat bread pizza w herbed whipped feta, omg this was delicious nice warm flatbread & w the cheese was right on the money. On the food we all ended up with the Butchers steak , this was great cooked well nice tasting piece of meat also tried the Lamb shoulder blade this was very good as well. For the sides Mashed potatoes were the winner, they were delicious followed by the Broccoli , Spinach both very good as well & the Fennel not bad. Nice looking restaurant not very big inside the outside area is cozy, service was very good our waiter was nice & attentive. Prices are doable, not too crazy we had a great dinner this place is definitely worth the try.

The waitstaff and atmosphere is absolutely lovely but the food is gross and overpriced. The radish dish is giant hunks of difficult to cut cold radish, very underwhelming. The burger despite being medium was very over cooked and so was the bacon and the potatoes were so burnt they cracked and broke instead when I tried to pick them up with a fork. The mortadella was extremely fatty and had a weird fishy flavor as did the greens which tasted extremely sour and were sopping wet. 2/10 would not reccomend for food, drinks would be cute here but that's about it
Be the first to ReplyThis is the 2nd time I've come here.
I was really impressed the first time, but this time was a mess.Positives:~ I was by myself so I was seated quickly.~ The waitstaff were niceNegatives:~ I ordered the 'Red Chili Shrimp' as an appetizer. For $25 the shrimp tasted vaguely like Lysol and the 'Red Chili' was pretty weak~ I had gone there for steak, but they only had a skirt (over-priced carne asada for tacos) or a $180 tomahawk. ~ Disappointed, I went instead for the lamb. When it came, roughly 35% of it was meat and the rest was bone/gristle/tendon.~ I ordered the mashed potatoes as a side and asked if there were any alliums besides garlic that were in them. They said no and when it came it was full of scallions.~ For 1x beer, 1x glass of wine, 1x side, the lamb, and tip the bill came to roughly $200.This was an extremely disappointing dinner.
Be the first to ReplyLocation, outdoor seating, and service were all solid.
The sides fell a bit flat. Biggest disappointment was in the meat. They had a special for the night we visit for a ribeye that was nearly inedible with such a high volume of fat. For an item that you pay for by the ounce, having 10+ ounces of fat seems like a rip-off. If you are here and must have steak - the butcher steak was average.
Be the first to ReplyTheir steaks are so amazing also the bacon.
Everything here is absolutely great. Highly recommend!!!! Defff book a reservation! It's sooooo good they're always busy!Cant wait to go again !!!!!
Be the first to ReplyDid not live up to expectations.
Food was good to very good but seldom great. Service was slow and haphazard. ย Wine was very very good. Butcher steak was nicely grilled and tender but slightly under seasoned and the garlic butter stingy and hard to find. Iceberg wedge with warm bacon dressing was good but again a bit holding back on full deliciousness. Almost as if to keep it affordable they pulled back slightly. Grilled clams were the high point- salt and sea and grill and olive oil with a delicious single piece of grille bread. Grilled artichokes were fine but forgettable as were the fingerling potatoes. Service was very slow and timing was off - the sides did not arrive till we were half done with our entrees.
