Best Dinner!
Wonderful dinner and great service. The Fish Chowder was amazing--such wonderful flavors. We also enjoyed the swordfish tips.
Be the first to ReplyOne of our favorite restaurants during our visit.
We had a great experience here. We were seated in the main dining room. The tables were lovely with candles in hurricane vases and potted live herbs. The tables were fully occupied. Our server was attentive and efficient. Our meals were very good. I was a little disappointed that, because we were there during restaurant week, most restaurants had Price Fix menus which I thought did not offer the best choices. It seemed to me every restaurant we visited had chicken under a brick or something like that. I ended up getting a pasta dish but I liked it. My husband loved what he ordered which included oysters. It ended up being one of our favorite restaurants while we were in town.
Be the first to ReplyCompetent, but unremarkable meal
I had a pretty poor meal at SWR last year and chalked it up to chance. We went again this year and while everything was acceptable, there wasn’t a hint of exceptional anything. At this price level ($83 price fixe for two courses), I would expect a more memorable meal as well as a bit more generosity with ingredients. By my calculations, SWR has one of the lowest food costs of any fine dining establishment on the island. I also wish the staff would lighten up a bit. Rigid stone-faced hospitality is so 2010s.
Be the first to ReplyGood, but should have been better
The Straight Wharf has long been one of our favorite in Nantucket - but when the prices are this high, one hopes for everything to be excellent. Sadly, on this visit there were too many issues - I would give 3.5 stars if I could. First - the menu is Prix Fixe so this limits diners freedom to maybe split an appetizer or even order two appetizers instead of an app and an entree. Not everyone has a huge appetite. In order to have their cake and eat it too, they then add a supplemental charge on several of the choices. Why have prix fixe if the best items are extra, and there is not a reduction for vegetarian choices. It all seems contrived for maximal profit. A few glitches with the service: we ordered a bottle of wine and when our server came back about 15 minutes later to take our order, she announced that the sommelier was backed up and it would "be a while before we would get our wine". I protested against this as we wanted a glass before our food came - and magically the wine appeared 2 minutes later. My wife then asked if the Day Boat scallops are bay or sea scallops as she prefers bay. The waitress did not hesitate and stated they are bay scallops. Of course when the entree arrived they were huge sea scallops. At a restaurant of this calibre, the staff should be knowledgeable about the food. The food was very good but a bit lacking in flavor - especially the spice crusted catch of the day. The fish was good but the sauce and vegetables had absolutely no flavor of any kind. The scallops were good and our appetizers (the monkfish and salmon crude were also good. We did not have dessert. My wife could not finish her food. The setting is nice but neither the setting nor the food was as good as at Brant Point Grill, where we also dined. That restaurant was also less $$$$ per person as we split a half dozen oysters as an appetizer.
Be the first to ReplyOk but food lacked
Overall ok - apps were better than the entrees. Fixed price for $82 for an app and entree. Over priced. The entrees lacked flavor. I had the monkfish and my wife had the chicken both lacked character. Drinks were good snd ambiance was excellent. Good for those reasons but not the food. The 2% for the kitchen tax is minor bit just an add on I didn’t like. Service good / kids working hard and doing their best. Food fell short.
Be the first to ReplyHmmm
Firstly the service was wonderful. As was the ambiance. The value for your money is horrible. I had the Lobster Bake for my entree. $117. ($85 plus $32 supplement.) I expected the best Lobster of my life but alas. The lobster had no taste and was mushy. The sweet corn tasting sauce was was cloying. Disappointing. Husbands swordfish was terrific. The Galettte was outstanding

***HEADS UP***This restaurant has a 2 course prix fixed menu, and does little to nothing to accommodate children. All that I can say to anyone considering to visit this restaurant ***READ THE FINE PRINT***. Booking your reservation through their online reservation system requires a credit card. This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip that my family was taking to celebrate a 70th birthday. Being new to the island, with two kids we booked this reservation online before our arrival. The night before our reservation, we received a text mentioning the 2 course menu. I tried to call the restaurant immediately that morning to discuss our options/express my concerns. They do not open until 5:30 pm so my only option was to simply cancel my reservation that morning online. Never heard from the restaurant until 11 DAYS AFTER our trip hitting us with a $350 bill for the late cancellation via an email. When I explained our reasoning, I was emailed links with 'fine text' outlining their policy. Not willing to work with me, or meet halfway given our situation. To make matters worse, it was all via email before business hours so that I cannot call the restaurant to discuss directly to the person. Very disappointed that 11 days after our trip to Nantucket this was the sour taste that has been left in our mouths. What happened to the customer coming first? What happened to communicating with a customer directly rather than through a computer screen. Terribly disappointed. Beware before you book. Not to mention the 'tone' of their emails extremely rude and condescending.
Be the first to ReplyLong-standing gem
Frequented by natives and tourists alike, everyone is welcomed. Prix fixe 2 course dinner is a great value with choices that are both traditional and modern. We started with Thai style monkfish, a spicy, imaginative take, and the crab pasta with plenty of vegetables and a light pesto. Scallops and salmon mains remind you why this restaurant has been a mainstay on the Island. We love people watching, and this is a great spot to see locals in their (fancy) native habitat. Beautiful artwork throughout the restaurant. We ate inside, as all the outdoor dining was taken, and found it a bit noisy at full capacity.
Be the first to ReplyA Spectacular Meal With So-So-Service
We dined at Straight Wharf eleven years ago while on a long weekend on the island. Our house guests chose it again as our last dinner with them of a weeklong stay in Madaket. The menu format has changed to a pre-fixed two-course, with desert being extra. I had to admit I was a bit worried that the new pre-fix format would mean a less spectacular meal than the one we had over a decade ago here when it was a la carte. I was wrong. It was an amazing meal. I was able to go online the minute reservations opened two weeks in advance and request a table for four at the harbor side deck in back with stunning views of the harbor as the sun slowly set. Spectacular. The watermelon gazpacho simply blew all our minds! I've made gazpacho numerous times from recipes from world-renowned chefs and this one smoked them all. My pasta with crab was perfectly al dente and delicious as well. Local hake with farm vegetables was perfectly cooked and uber fresh. Ditto the swordfish. Deserts were all simply divine. We chose a Montrachet to go with the mains that everyone adored. They excel at French whites and I recommend trying one here. The Sommeliers are very knowledgable and helpful and love to talk wine! For a restaurant celebrating 47 years on island, Straight wharf has not gotten old or rested on its laurels. One point off would be for service however. There have been others with issues on service on TA. Our coffee came well after desert arrived making for a bad last impression. Our server seemed to be rather dialing it in all night. Just not very warm or terribly attentive. Overall it was a big hit with everyone. There are lot of choices in fine dining on Nantucket. Straight Wharf might seem a bit 'old guard' at first glance to some. But the room is beautiful and dripping with Nantucket charm and the food is impeccable. Get a table in back on the deck, sip a cool glass of french white, watch the boats on the harbor and enjoy a fine dinner here. You won't regret it.
Be the first to ReplyFancy Dinner!
My husband and I were on Nantucket for the first time, and we went to Straight Wharf for our "fancy" dinner. Delicious food, fancy ambiance. I made the reservation on Tock and checked that we were celebrating our anniversary. We did not mention it to our server, but she still brought us a complimentary dessert. Straight Wharf is a favorite memory from our trip!
Be the first to ReplyFood is impeccable, service--not so much
I have nothing but 'excellent' for the food, always has been fantastic (at least in the past 15-20 years, several times all season, I forget how long we've been coming), hoping it always will be. Usually do the front deck, which serves the bar menu but that's our favorite food anyway. HOWEVER, service through the years has been spotty. Sometimes great, other times there's just something that spoils the experience. We arrived, as is our custom (again, for the past 15-20 YEARS), around 5, to sit outside at our favorite table and people watch until they open at 5:30. This time we were prevented from doing so, by the hostess(?) who said 'it's how we do things'. Never mind that we were the only ones there-- and the only ones for about an hour (pro tip, go early, go weekday). When I pushed back (citing our long custom and the fact that we had done that a few weeks ago), she said, 'what do you want me to do?' Perhaps be a little accommodating? Perhaps THINK a bit? Look around and assess that it would not have hurt anyone, anything to let us sit at the table that we got 20 minutes later.... It's not an inexpensive meal, but sometimes everyone forgets who the customer is. This won't stop me from going again-- but I'm sure I'm not the only one who is subjected to Straight Wharf's lack of hospitality. Sooner or later, the attitude will catch up to SWR.
Be the first to ReplyNot what we had hoped for
The 3 stars has nothing to do with the food. The swordfish and salmon are amazing. The restaurant is beautiful. The stars were removed for the lack of friendliness that Nantucket is known for. Our reservation was 30 minutes behind schedule. We stood waiting, which would have been fine if the hostess would have at least acknowledged us and updated us instead of acting peeved that we were standing there (after she said she couldn’t find our res that was made by our hotel and then found it). Not even a smile. We had high hopes for Straight Wharf, but we were let down. First impressions are important, and they often become your memory of a place. Shame that they can’t find someone with more social skills.
Be the first to ReplyBest restaurant on Nantucket
Best meal on Nantucket. Better than Toppers. Pre Fixe menu with lots of options. The clambake is a must- shaved crispy potatoes, spicy chorizo, lobster. Come early and go to the bar. Reservations a must. The shortbread at the end is so good. Definitely get the Galette berry desert with ice cream. One of my fav meals in the country.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service, food, location.
I want to say a Big Thank you to the manager in a dining room on June 21. She not only patiently listened to my complaints about sitting outside but accommodated our request. My husband has a health condition and has been advised to only dine outdoors while Covid cases are still high. I know. Who is not tired of this pandemic? I also didn’t know that there was a bar section and a dining room section. Their website doesn’t do a good job at making that clear. Menus differ but there is an outside area to sit on a bar side. Now to food. Protein was cooked perfectly. Dishes are also well prepared. Ingredients are fresh but too many on one plate for my taste. My poached salmon was perfectly medium rare but had greens, two types of beets, mushrooms with some that were roasted and some pickled. It just seemed a bit too many flavors in one dish. The strawberry rhubarb galette was fabulous. Real summer dessert. Our server Ivan (?) was very attentive as well as other servers. Nice people watching place. Kids had pasta. It is fresh and cooked al dente. Too chewy for one kid. They can probably add fish and fries for kids since they serve fish. Hake or salmon or cod would all do.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food, Service, and Customer Focus in a Beautiful Setting
Our visit started rough. I had made a reservation via Open Table and requested a window table on the reservation. We arrived early to a basically empty restaurant, except for two tables, yet were going to be seated next to the bathroom. Why do some restaurants put you in a crappy table when better tables are available? We politely asked for the window table and they were enthusiastically nice about seating us there. Just not sure why we had to ask (we also asked if we could sit on the patio, as it was basically empty and were told no, that they had reservations already - but I doubt that was the case when table sat empty during our time dining). After cocktails (reasonably priced and delicious), we started with the two course fixed price menu. I started with beef tartare. It was very good. My wife started with the soup and it was delicious!!! For dinner, my wife had the spiced Halibut and I had the Salmon. Unfortunately, the Halibut was just too salty. The fish itself was very fresh and cooked perfectly tender. She enjoyed it when she cut off the spiced topping. My Salmon was probably the best tasting Salmon dish I had ever had - anywhere. When asked how our meal was my wife mentioned the fish was just too salty for her, but she worked around it. They could not have been nicer and more apologetic. They immediately took the fish off the bill. The manager also came by. I have not seen a restaurant handle and issue so well and put the customer first. They certainly earned our loyalty and we will be back next time in Nantucket.
Be the first to ReplyPlease, sit outside!
Omg, great wine list, they have a appetizer/ entree for $75 and we enjoyed the scallops, the clam bake , the salad and the hake fish special. The desert was delicious as we enjoyed the galette (which is a must). Service was terrific!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent. Excellent. Excellent.
Haven’t been here for some time and glad I chose to come back. Our server, Maggie, was very sweet and helped us make some great dinner choices. Gazpacho was over the top; full of watermelon, tomato, cucumbers, and feta cheese crumble. Great summer flavors. Fish was very fresh and excellently prepared. Nice crowd, nice ambiance, great food. Chef is really a pro and I highly
Recommend this restaurant.
A must: order the galette for dessert at the beginning of the meal as it needs time to be prepared.
Very good food, excellent service
This was a really excellent experience. Excellent fine dining in Nantucket. Not the best food on the island, but clearly the best service. Great atmosphere. The restaurant obviously had a chip on their shoulder about the fact that the entire island is understaffed due to Covid, because they put a large half-page disclaimer on the first page of their menu explaining the problem. So I’ll give them a pass, particularly because the service was better than the food. Which is saying a lot because the food was really really great. But, not the best on the island. Check out my other reviews if you’re interested in the best food.
Be the first to ReplyLoved the atmosphere!
Service and food were outstanding. They have some nice touches (parmesan crisps, homemade shortbread) that made this a really special meal.

The view from our table on the deck was amazing
The food was beyond excellent (I had the burata salad and the full clam bake and my fiancé had the burata salad and the hake fish which was the fish special and for desert we had the berry galette
The presentation of the food was also excellent
The server was attentive but not overbearing and very helpful in making our dinner selections.
It was quite expensive but that is Nantucket in general so be prepared. The bill with tip was $330.00
When we return to the island we will definitely be going back
Wonderful experience
Our perfect dining experience began with us being seated on the waterfront on their rear porch. Service was exceptional. The food was spectacular.

We chose this restaurant to celebrate a special family birthday. The service was impeccable. This was a pre-fix dinner with ample choices of entrees. Beautifully presented, everyone's meal was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyA $350+ mistake on my part
Hospitality is much about expectations and their being met. With the great reviews of so many people we had the highest of expectations, but they were nowhere near being met. With an early reservation and having asked for an outside (water view) table we were initially disappointed to be seated on a two-top adjacent to a window overlooking the outdoors smearing. The depth of the table, coupled with the high noise level in the room, made for difficult, certainly not intimate, conversation. The menus had some great selections and I enjoyed the beef carpaccio appetizer and the diver scallops. But my wife, who is mostly a vegetarian, was appalled by the vegetarian offerings - even though the restaurant is billed as vegetarian friendly. The mixed lettuce first course had nothing to differentiate it from a large bunch of lettuce leaves thrown (not presented) on a plate. The broccolini was unappetizingly presented on a dish without garnish or presentation and without the offering of any sauce, such as hollandaise, which could have markedly improved the bland taste. A bottle of Chablis from the knowledgeable sommelier was very pleasant and the ability to end the meal with amari (Fernet Branca and di Montenegro). On the other hand we learned that cafe presse only was available as the server told us that the kitchen was too small to accommodate an espresso machine. We had the opportunity of discussing some of the issues and our other sentiments with the General Manager before leaving. They included small, but image impacting, issues including a few such as: as the lack of a warm welcome from the hostess and her assistant, the latter routinely conducting new arrivals past our table to get to the outside seating (apparently never having a kind welcoming word to say to any arrival, never smiling and invariably acting as if she was a robot without care for her role); servers being dressed in a range of their personal clothes that ranged from chic to casual to plain sloppy. At the pricing and reputation of this restaurant our expectation was far greater than the actuality - on the other hand maybe we had too high an expectation as clearly the rating of so many is clearly so high.
Be the first to ReplyA MUST FOR AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE!
Straight Wharf Restaurant in Nantucket was simply incredible! The moment we walked into this restaurant, we knew we were at someplace special. Maggie went above and beyond as our server. The manager, Taryn, came to welcome us to Nantucket. Then the food arrived...AMAZING! This restaurant ranks as one of the top THREE Restaurants that we have EVER had the pleasure to enjoy throughout our travels. Book a reservation....well worth it!
Be the first to ReplyMisled by the restaurant description and reviews, disappointed
I’m going to be honest here, I feel quite a bit misled by the description of this restaurant.
We reserved a space at this restaurant during Covid for a special occasion, and ended up very much wishing we had selected a meal somewhere else.
Things I wish I knew going into this outdoor evening meal: there are no heat lamps on the deck, the outdoor chairs are cheap plastic, there really aren’t any views to speak of, the servers and hosts are in t-shirts and leggings.
My recommendation: do NOT eat outside here on a special occasion (no one acknowledged ours even though we told them in advance), don’t spend the extra $$ for the clam bake or salmon crudo added to the pre-fix menu, but if you do end up here, do get the galette dessert.
I will say, the hostess turned people away at the door because they were so busy and when pushed recommended they try Or, the Whale instead; we went there the next night - and we do agree with her, highly recommend!
