Omakase
Best ingredients selected no doubt, down to earth execution with elegant presentation, left without regrets. Only suggestion for beverage part, sake was recommended and ordered, but some matcha or sparkling alongside would be perfect.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite bistro in Kyoto
Years back, Ifuki was a gem off Pontocho street in Kyoto. They moved to Gion and quickly got Michelin One Star. Now it received Two Stars from Michelin, and it deserves it. It is in the most traditional neighborhood of Gion off Hanamikoji street and occupy the most romantic corner. But it's not just about the ambiance. Food is impeccable. At the same time, it is not uptight because of the bistro style. Chef Yamamoto perfected charcoal grilling and delivers finest dishes with premium ingredients. Impossible to complain. I always enjoy eating at the counter. If you do too, book well ahead.

Upon recommendation from the concierge list, my wife and I decided to try this restaurant. Definitely not disappointed, from the ambiance to the service and the food, it was truly a great foodies night.
A bit out there even for me but..
Ifuki is clearly among the peak of fine dinning in Tokyo. Difficult to locate as all the fronts on this beautiful street look the same. Our hotel made the reservations for us so we got the private room for two, so keep that in mind depending your preference. imakase only - chef's tasting menu. We were a little disappointed that they only white wine they had by the glass was a moscato...after we finished the moscato the second bottle they opened for us by the glass was not fantastic either. The sake how ever was of course outstanding. Authentic Japanese for sure! I had black bear and fugu. If your very adventurous food wise definitely go for it! Some of the sauces and pickled this n that was too much even for me and I consider myself adventurous. Great service with limited menu. I think we were the last ones out and I got to take a photo with chef :)

High end and I think 2 michelin stars. Food was spot on. Hard to find as its in a row of very traditional tea houses/restaurants in Gion, just off Hanami-Koji street. No English signs, only Japanese so take a card with the Japanese name of the restaurant on. Once inside we had counter seats which are recommended to add to the overall experience if like us, a private dining room is not always wanted. The place was full of locals, plus a guy from Tokyo who comes once every few months! I can see why. The food and the atmosphere along with the engagement across the counter from the owners and chefs made for a memorable evening. Ladies leave the fancy heels behind - like many other restaurants here, it's a shoes-off policy at the door!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Traditional Kyoto Kappo Meal at Ifuki
During my research of Kyoto restaurants, I was recommended Ifuki by Justin from myconciergejapan.com.
Ifuki is a Japanese grill Kappo restaurant owned by a husband and wife. The meal was a mixture of different plates and cooking preparation, really beautiful, perfectly composed and balanced flavors. The incredible cooking we ate that night matched the Michelin star expectation. Like many of the best restaurants in Kyoto, Chef Norio Yamamato serves a kaiseki-Kappo meal with seasonal ingredients. The difference is much of his food is grilled on an open flame. The beef course was fantastic!
There was one staff member that spoke excellent English and the wife spoke little English. The service was extraordinary friendly. Unforgettable, especially because it was mine and my brother's first time eating in a private room.
