Very High Quality
This is a nice place for a more intimate setting since it’s tucked away below a basement and only sits nine diners so you don’t have to wait too long for each piece. I like the chef because he is quiet and humble and not too boisterous like some celebrity ones or wannabes. Some dishes are common like the Golden-eyed Snapper, Hairy Crab, or Fatty Tuna. Others are somewhat unique like Abalone w/mushrooms. It didn’t knock me off my socks but I like the somewhat quiet basement ambiance. When I went outside, it was even more quiet because I guess of the holiday weekend? I mean Midtown East on a Saturday evening is this quiet? Not sure, since I rarely travel this part of town but I like the quietness. The dinner lasted about 2 hours which is just right. Any longer and I feel it’s too long but the 1 hr or 90 mins ones feel short and I guarantee you still be hungry after the short ones. The ending had every conceivable dish - a very delicious piece of Tamago, Miso soup, Green Tea, and then ice cream to finish it off which is exactly what I needed. You can never be unsatisfied when it ends with ice cream. I took off one star because I did not like the music which ranged from slow jazz to elevator music and it sent me to various moods from boredom to depression to sadness. You rarely have music during Omakases and for good reason because the quietness and stillness is part of the experience and why some more popular Omakases have horrible ambiance because they usually have loud, rude clientele and all you hear are their voices yapping away. Not the case here, thank goodness, but the music is awful since everyone have their own preference for music.
Be the first to ReplyWorst Michelin star experience I’ve ever had!
It started with the flies and cockroaches around the table as we sat.
We should have left.
When we asked for Sauvignon Blanc and were told they had something similar; and instead of something similar we were given a bottle Appletini, and charged $120
for it;
We should have left.
Terrible, non existent service.
You guessed it: we should have left.
Food. Mediocre at best. And this was the highlight.
We’ve eaten at the best sushi restaurants across the globe and I’m simply shocked that this place has a Michelin star. It shouldn’t even have a food license.
When the bill came for $523, we should have left.
Dreadful
Very good but
This place was highly recommended. No doubt the quality of the fish is very good although I have seen better in other places. I was a bit disappointed with the standards. Example the rice feel of the Nigiri sushi few times. Something which should not happen after high end quality sushi restaurant. The decor and atmosphere is a traditional Japanese sushi counter. Service was very friendly and efficient. One issue which how is that surprised me was when I asked for the bill. I was presented with a bill, I gave my credit card, The waitress took the credit card and swapped it through the machine and brought the bill back to me. I asked there do I need to sign it and she said yes. So I signed the bill picked up my stuff and started to leave. Half way on the stairs I was surprised with the waitress chasing me and almost shouting that the tip is not included in the bill. I have no issue with paying a tip but they should have explained that when they presented the bill rather than choosing a customer on the stairs. I found this to be unprofessional.
Be the first to ReplyOver-rated; shouldn’t be one star Michelin
This is a very good sushi restaurant - don’t get me wrong. But it is just over-rated.
The fish is as fresh and as good as they come, but my criticism comes from the lack of creativity and differentiation for a one star restaurant. I can very much claim to have tried some of the best sushi restaurants around the world, and Michelin starred sushi restaurants always have one thing in common: giving you some pieces that can only be experienced at that restaurant. This is either via the sourcing of fish (arising from superb knowledge of seasons and where, globally, to acquire the fish from which source and via connections), the way the piece is put together (flavoring), or both.
As you can see from my photos, there is pretty much zero surprise from beginning to end. Every piece of fish/dish I can recognize and taste I can recall. The preparation is exactly how it is - plain vanilla with soy sauce.
If you are looking for a first class, run of the mill experience but with the best fish of its class, then you should come here. My view is that the chef is simply not experienced enough (he’s too young). He couldn’t have had learnt either the deep culinary skills or having the network/relationships for fish sourcing to provide a world class experience.
And the fact that the restaurant has 2 seatings, 6 and 8:30, really bothers me. It means that commercial opportunity is prioritized over experience. The preparation of fish is “altogether” when each piece is served, and without a team (solo chef) it is clearly very taxing on the chef. The focus was therefore execution rather than thought and careful preparation.
The price is reasonable at $250 for omakase, but then again comparatively the price-to-value isn’t that great. My suggestion is for the restaurant to go back to the basics first. Really earn that star rather than trying to maximize the commercial opportunity at the same time.
Extraordinary
This is the best omakase in New York.
Its not cheap but it's a real experience that i keep thinking about a week later.
If you can afford around 850$ for 2 for a special treat i can heartily recommend it
Nothing more to say.
Baby stroller Welcome with delighting food
The food is delicate food with good taste! And you don’t worry about leaving with hunger like some of Japanese restaurants. The portion is small but variety of food stuff you!

This is the best pure sushi place I have been to in NYC. Very interesting and tasty pieces. Some fun and tasty cooked dishes. The chef is awesome very nice and friendly. Great service and they have good glasses Zaltos. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyThe New Standard for NYC Sushi
I've been to all the fancy NYC sushi joints and a number of the elite Sushi places in Tokyo. I can safely say this is the best in New York (and the closest to Tokyo quality you'll find) and in many ways, it is actually better than a lot of the greats in Japan. Better than Jiro, better than Iwa, at least from my experience, im sure this place will be getting 2* pretty soon.
Bravo
