Sushi Gen Los Angeles Reviews from The Last Year
This place did not disappoint.
Went here on a Friday and there was already a line before the place even opened and got packed really quickly. Service was fast and food tasted great. We ordered a variety of food: Sushi deluxe, salmon collar lunch combo, yellowtail collar lunch combo and fresh water eel combo. everything tasted great and just melts in your mouth. Truly a pleasure to eat. Servers are just constantly running around the place to make sure each guest is entertained. They have to-go containers in case you didn't finish you food. Overall experience was great. I was unable to take photos because were too hungry
Chutoro
High quality fish cut perfectly served efficiently. Great value. Don’t be surprised if you find your favorite LA sushi chef sitting at the bar. No frills or fussy fusion. Is 5 orders of chutoro excessive for two people? Everything was amazing.
The restaurant is very popular.
I waited for more than 40 minutes to have the dinner. The staff is very nice and friendly. The food is very delicious. The decoration is Japanese style. I really appreciate your food, thank you very much.

Many Sushi places around Little Tokyo but Sushi Gen is the Spot! Very busy all day , waiting time 45 minutes. Lunch special Sushi is the deal. Take a look at photo!

Fish quality is good but the rice quality was really dissatisfying. Don't understand the hype.
I'll keep the answer short and simple since I've been here
I'll keep the answer short and simple since I've been here multiple times. I normally don't give a place 5 stars but Sushi Gen definitely deserves it since the quality and price has always been consistent. This restaurant rivals some of the more high end sushi restaurants in little Tokyo for half the price. Highly recommended! Service, food and wait times aren't bad if you're going with only 2 people.
Great sushi, great service.
For those of you looking for something more than salmon/tuna/yellowtail, this is your place. Sea bream, gizzard shad, mackerel, perch and of course uni.
I always appreciate the level of organization and teamwork
I always appreciate the level of organization and teamwork here. The sushi chefs are artisans. Together with their assistants and wait staff, they just make magic happen. They have a wide variety of sushi and if are adventurous the chefs will create something truly special for you. Toyo-sama and his family have done an impeccable job running Sushi Gen. Their staff is on point, go brave the line, the weather, the traffic, the parking, etc. Its incredible
The hype is real.
Sushi Gen is a Little Tokyo classic and for good reason. The sashimi deluxe at both lunch and dinner are well-worth the price! I love the variety, quality, and taste of the fish. I love that it's not just raw fish (fave, obviously) but also soy braised fish to change up the textures. The spicy tuna on that plate is one of the best I've ever had!!! Other dishes I recommend are the hamachi kama ($32) which is pricey but they give you two meaty pieces so it's worth it. The hotate is superb and so is amaebi! You can skip the soft shell crab, too pricey for what you get. If I could add my name to a yelp waitlist instead of physically being here, I'd come all the time!
Always a pleasure minus the line.
All the fish is very fresh. I would like to do more sushi only next time so you can chose your favorites but the combos are a great deal and do fill you up nicely.
I came in on a random Tuesday.
Wait was still a bit long but I honestly didn't mind. Whenever I pass by on other days the line is a bit longer and so I took my chances and decided to wait. In about 15 to 20 min I was seated. I ordered the Premium Sushi. Within a few minutes of ordering I was brought miso soup and a salad. Not too long after was the dish. Amazing! Just absolutely amazing. Perfect portions. Super fresh melt in your mouth fish. Just a wonderful wonderful experience all around.
25+ yr patron.
Sushi Gen has been in business since 1980 and i’ve been frequenting with my family for 25 years +. The quality is one of the top in LA and prices are shocking good considering the quality. The sushi chefs are always so polite and masters at their craft. If you want to opt for the sashimi/ sushi dinners/ deluxe, you must sit at a table vs bar. It’s one of the best bargains you’ll find in the city. I like reading when people write that the staff is rude / abusive for having to wait in line. This place is run like an authentic Japanese restaurant. In Japan, ppl wait in line for hours even during lunch for good food. The bar does not have a breakdown prices on the menu. Having said that, prices are fair. I don’t imagine they would be in business for this long for gouging their guests. If you must know how the price of each item, don’t sit at the bar/ sit at the table.
Very bad experience!
I was with a friend for dinner, at first they made us wait inside and then an arrogant waiter made us sit outside the room and wait our turn. We were given the menu without prices and only at my request was I given the full menu with prices. We had dinner at the bar and I have to say the sushi is good. But the real problem is the rudeness of a waiter and the chef who served us at the bar. When we asked for the bill, it seemed to us that the bill was not correct and we asked for clarifications on the final bill ... the Chef who served us, with great rudeness, allowed himself to tell us "pay and go out!" with a sign of the hand, while the waiter with an annoyed air did not deign to greet us. In my opinion, there are better sushis and you will certainly be treated well. I recommend to stay away from this restaurant.
Still the quintessential LA sushi restaurant that stays true to itself (no gimmicks fresh sushi)
This is the classic LA sushi restaurant that has stayed true to its old self. Two pieces per order, fresh fish, typically served unseasoned, limited menu (has all the fish you would recognize). I have frequented since the late 80s and pretty much nothing has changed. Quality has been maintained and the no reservations plus a very long queue remains the trademark of this restaurant. Don’t expect surprises - you come here for the freshest pieces served unseasoned. Service is fast and I pretentious. Prepare for a long wait though. If you come late and wait for sushi bar the wait is shorter.

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
