Super clean, nice sushi
The first question I’m sure Yelpers will ask when they see my rating: Why didn’t you give this place a perfect five star rating? My brief answer: It’s excellent but trades setting, the show of making sushi, and the art of up-selling for a truly exceptional experience. I’ll explain infra. For perspective, I’ve eaten sushi in Japan and other major cities and travel extensively. Food: We ordered a ten piece prix fixe for $200/person. The offerings ranged from very “low end” cuts of sushi to a few medium grade items. The sushi portions were just a little smaller than what I would classify as average. Some items were very good and some were disappointing. Examples of disappointing items: 1. Cold Japanese steamed egg- I wasn’t expecting a cold steamed egg, and the combination of texture, temperature, and flavor wasn’t very good. 2. Squid- beautifully prepared but squid is a poor man’s sushi. 3. Mackerel- I view mackerel as bait fish for real sushi (I’ve been deep sea fishing in the Pacific and used mackerel as bait). 4. Shrimp- I didn’t even eat the shrimp. Chef was surprised, but it didn’t go to waste. My wife ate it and said it was just ok. 5. Miso soup was good but served a bit tepid. On the positive side, the singular piece of tuna was good quality and very tasty. It wasn’t Oh Toro fatty, but it was good. Service: Good but micro managing service. The staff wants everything to be perfect from its perspective. For example, one patron at the bar wanted to share his sake with his wife. The waitress sternly corrected the young man and said no sharing is allowed. The show: Sitting at the bar was interesting to see master sushi chefs at work up close. Comfort: Sitting at the bar for two hours on an uncomfortable stool with your knees jammed into the counter with barely any room between patrons was horrible. Also, if you’re unfortunately seated at the bar with less than stellar bar-mates, the whole experience can be excruciating. Ambiance: Formal Japanese ambiance with a very modern, clean vibe. Value: If you want to pay for a show rather than sushi, by all means Sushi Ginza Onodera is worth it. Also, expect up-selling after the prix fixe. Another menu with additional items is offered after the meal. For $36, we ordered two very small tuna rolls. They were good but not exceptional. If you are an epicurean focused more on food than show, skip Sushi Ginza Onodera and go to Gaku or another sushi restaurant in Honolulu. At the end of our meal, including one beer, an extra tuna roll, and our prix fixe, our bill approached $500, and I needed a snack later that evening. For the same money you can eat like a king, including indulging on some Oh Toro bluefin at Gaku and be truly satiated. In sum, concerning value Sushi Ginza Onodera is low on the value spectrum judging solely by food. For the show and experience, I see some value added but this metric largely drives my four star rating (along with lack of comfort as a lesser metric). Overall cleanliness: perfect Bathroom cleanliness: perfect

Wow this is as good as being in japan. We were lucky to slip in for reservation and even the private room. All the rare fishes from all over the japan nodoguro from Toyama and bafun uni from Hokkaido. Everything was super good. Of course this also came with super rare Japanese sake as well.

The food is truly amazing, the egg custard, nigiri, miso soup and also the dessert! We love each of them. But the service at beginning was truly rude and made us very disappointed. We made reservations 7:30pm , I thought it was not far away from Waikiki, so we walked to find the restaurant, first time for this one, arrived too too early and tired, was thinking to get a place to wait so I checked with the restaurant, generally when I opened the door, the lady was rude and trying to push us out…I explained her our situation, she said please wait outside, we have customers here! I was shocked and told her there is no place to wait outside, too close to street, and asked her for 7:30pm reservation when will be good time to be here? she told me we have customers here, no guarantee time…you need get out…finally we came in 7:45…she actually can do much better to tell us they have very tiny place, there is not waiting place anyway inside…another lady later explained us nicely about it…
Be the first to ReplyBest Omakase experience I've ever had in my life
Hands down the best Omakase experience I've ever had in my life! It checks ALL the boxes. My partner and I have been fortunate enough to have had Omakase in some of the most well renowned places in the world, including Sukiyabashi Jiro Roppongi (owned by Takashi Ono, son of famed sushi chef Jiro Ono). But wow, wow, wow, Sushi Ginza Onodera beats all of them in every aspect. The food quality, all the different textures in each plate, the ornate plates and glassware, the food presentation, the umami flavors, the detailed service, and Chef's cheery personality, all of it is first class. Yes, it is expensive, but we have zero regrets. I've never enjoyed food so much. I smiled with every bite, slowed down to really savor it, laughed and practiced my newly learned Japanese phrases with Chef and his team. Sake was also the best I've ever had. My partner is a big foodie and he was so animated with every bite (see our pics). If you're in Oahu, this is a must once-in-a-lifetime experience. And please, if you're going to spend the money to eat here, put your phone away and just be present with Chef. His knife skills alone are worth the price of dinner. What an epic experience. Highly recommended!!
Be the first to ReplyLunch set 2 for the win.
I had a great lunch set at Ginza today. It was abi tuna, rice, miso soup and a salad plus seaweed salad and a drink for around $23. Very good and very filling. In fact, I really think the tuna serving was too large - did I really just say that! Great lunch treat.

A group of friends enjoyed dinner here. Various starters (chawan mushi, various sashimi including chu toro, otoro, uni) then nigiri sushi and dessert. I like the warm flavored rice and fresh grated wasabi...yes quality is higher than typical sushi restaurants but question over $300/pp?
Be the first to ReplyExcellent sushi dinner in Honolulu
The dinner was on par with our sushi dinners in Tokyo! The service was excellent and every dish was delicious!! You should try their excellent Japanese craft beer which is some of the best beer we have ever tasted.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great chef, great experience
We were so lucky to have booked Sushi Ginza Onodera just a few days before arriving. Our trip to Hawaii was a bit last minute, but we also wanted to celebrate and enjoy some good food. We've been to a few omakase places in SF and Tokyo, and was worried we'd be disappointed. However, the service and food was amazing and we truly enjoyed our experience. We had seasonal items that are harder to find, the fish was fresh, the sake pairing was delicious and the service was fantastic. If we were in the area, we would definitely come back.

This was an experience not to be missed. Wife got worried as we approached the location. Neighborhood is not the best. You go in the front door and it’s a Karate Kid moment! Not what you see outside tells the tale inside. OMG the sushi kept coming and every bite better than the last! Not cheap but in life “you get what you pay for” sums this place up. I’ll never forget that night!!! Go, I mean it just GO!!!
