Do you like truffle on your sushi? If you're a purist or looking for a traditional edomae omakase Ishikawa might not be for you. If you want to have a sushi experience unlike any other in the city than Ishikawa is a must. Ishikawa specializes in topping fish with extravagant toppings like white truffle, black truffle, gold flakes, quail egg, etc. There are other spots that do the fish toppings as well, but what separates Ishikawa from them is the quality of the fish. We went for New Year's Eve and the menu was a special menu so some of the items we had were specific to that night. Our favorites; -Cuddlefish With Uni -Dungeness Crab With Otoro & Caviar -Medium Fatty Tuna With White Truffle -Uni Milk Bread Ikura -Snowcrab Uni Abalone -Tuna Quail Egg Truffle (this was an additional item and if they are offering it GET IT, incredible piece) Service was excellent and informative. The restaurant offers sushi bar seating and has some tables as well. If you can, book the sushi bar for the best experience.

Wow!!! What an awesome way to celebrate friends from coast to coast coming together for a birthday but also to enjoy some yummy omakase. We all walked out stuffed to our hearts content - SO MUCH SEAFOOD!!! The service was fantastic and felt very cozy. Very well priced for such an innovative experience.

One of my new favorite omakases in the city! Definitely not cheap as it is $175 minus drinks and tip but they did not skimp on ingredients. My friend that I came with was trying omakase for the first time and she was blown away and had a fantastic first experience. Everything melted in our mouths and they made us feel very comfortable. There were some unique pieces on the menu that were beautifully crafted.

During my last visit, there were several issues that significantly impacted my dining experience. The fish didn't taste fresh (fishy and discoloration), and the caviar was too oily (the lower grade of caviar); plus the cleanliness of the restaurant was not up to par, the restroom smelled like public restroom in Central Park. It was disappointing. I have eaten here three times and it's sad to see my friends were not impressed.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely amazing omakase experience designed by Chef Pham
Absolutely amazing omakase experience designed by Chef Pham with 17 pieces of "heavy hitters." They use the best ingredients, perfectly paired and beautifully crafted. Each piece is a work of art. This is not your traditional edomae omakase but rather offers a fusion twist with additions such as caviar, truffle, and even gold flakes. Every piece feels like a delectable blend of 2-3 pieces (example include the wagyu, foie gras, and truffle piece and an o-toro, akami, and caviar). We came for my birthday and they treated us to 2 glasses of rose each, which was unexpected and very gracious. Highly recommend and the service, quality and value is exceptional at $175 compared to what you would get at any other omakase venue for $150+. We will definitely be back soon.

What do I even say - WOW! Had such a lovely evening at Sushi Ishikawa. The fish was unbelievably fresh and presentation was amazing. Our waitress was so lovely and well informed, she made the experience even better. Food was melt in your mouth, great atmosphere, and overall lovely evening. Definitely expensive but for the quality of fish is not over the top. I have been to more expensive omakase and this was definitely on par.

This place is non-traditional, however, it plays a unique flair on omakase. If you're looking for omakase with a little more "oomph", come here! Perfect for an adventurous dinner date. My partner took me here for the first time a few years ago for a birthday surprise and everything was exquisite. The service was friendly and attentive. Overall, a great experience.
Be the first to ReplySushi Ishikawa is obviously not your traditional edomae
Sushi Ishikawa is obviously not your traditional edomae omakase experience so don't come here if that's what you are looking for. But if what you ARE looking for is a modern, contemporary take on omakase featuring such indulgent ingredients such as foie gras, wagyu, truffle, uni, caviar and gold flakes then this is where you need to be!! Chef Pham's omakase set is far from traditional here but that's the appeal here and makes it a true standout. In a city full of traditional edomae omakase options, Chef Pham's contemporary approach is both imaginative and creative. Each nigiri is not only tantalizing to the tastebuds but aesthetically pleasing as well, each a work of culinary art in its own regard. The ambience here is very inviting and not intimidating at all as some high end omakase places in the city can sometimes be. Moreover, my wife and I were here celebrating our anniversary this particular night. I had mentioned to Chef Pham that we were visiting from San Francisco and he and his staff were incredibly pleasant and made our entire experience one of the most memorable we've ever had. We were also given complimentary glasses of champagne which was a nice added bonus. We spoke in depth a lot about where his fish was sourced and toro kama (collar) came up. Without any hesitation, Chef Pham offered us a single kama nigiri which he presented to us alone and which I appreciated immensely since I know the amount of fish cut from the collar is a very limited amount. It was the first time I ever had the opportunity to indulge in kama before and it was by far one of my favorite pieces of the evening. Even though it would be obviously difficult for us to dine at Sushi Ishikawa on a regular basis since we live in the west coast, my wife and I both agreed we would definitely return in a heartbeat the next time we are in NYC!! Can't recommend this place enough!! 5 stars!!

Everything that Chef Don and his team create tantalizes all the taste buds. Nini makes the dining experience even more fun. We always make sure we get to eat here at least once when we are in NYC.
Be the first to ReplyService is very good.
Hard working and personable. The many-course-meal entails many s all plates; the servers work hard. The sushi chefs meanwhile are churning out slabs of fish, layering on toppings as fast as they can. It's the parfait of sushi. Oh wait, therefore it's not really Japanese sushi anymore. It's a moussaka of sushi? A lasagna of sushi, layers of fish stacked with layers of roe or truffles or even gold flakes. Most of which should not be eaten in the same bite as raw fish. Nice try. Trying to look impressive but, sadly failing. Ambience is sterile but acceptable.

Omakase here screams creative! I came here years ago back in 2017 and I remember I loved my time here. Each piece was well thought out and the flavors were unique and worked together.Fast forward to now, the pieces seem to have shrunk ambit I still thought it was delicious and had that creative flair. The staff was super attentive and Don Pham himself makes the whole experience pleasant! My favorite pieces were the scallop, uni + toro hand roll (ended up getting another), and basically anything with uni lol. It's pricey--we spent upwards of $600 for two people. If you're venturing out for omakase, there a lot of other spots I would try first but give this one a go!

By far one of the most superior omakase restaurants in New York City. My girlfriend and I stopped in for Valentine's Day and was served 17 great courses. All the pieces were satisfying and well put together.

Absolutely delicious! Of the 17 courses, everything was a banger to great, I really enjoyed every bite.Dessert was also included, which was a matcha panna cotta and a yuzu shot.Of the sushi courses, each one was dressed up a bit with extra elements compared to just the fish rice and traditional components at other spots; while this might not be everyone's cup of tea, I really appreciated the flavors. My favorite pieces were the kamatoro and crab+toro+caviar (yes all in one piece).

I came here on 2 separate occasions 12/14/2022 and 12/30/2022. First time - 10/10, there were some pieces that weren't my favorite, but for $175 and Don Pham's charisma I walked out knowing I'd recommend it to anyone. However, right before New Years, my rating went from a 10 to a 5 maybe. I was unimpressed. Sushi rice was cold.. falling apart and the fried pieces of fish they used were not warm either. I truly was so disappointed and I should've said something. This place is not your traditional omakase spot, the flavors are innovative and complex. I can't say all the toppings and additions he adds to the fish are my taste, I do think it can be a bit overpowering and I can't taste the actual fish sometimes. That being said, I do think some pairings he creates do work well and elevates the fish. Memorable pieces for me were - the crab w toro and caviar, shiso leaf one, wagyu w foie gras, the two non nigiri dishes - the thai inspired dish was so yummy and the uni, scallop, octopus dish was amazing. The handroll at the end was perfect and the matcha coconut pudding was even more perfect.Again, overall such a great first experience (5 stars) but extremely disappointed in my second dining experience (2.5/3 stars). This was less than a month apart from each other. Consistency is super important to me. I hope they can work quality control.
Be the first to ReplyI've eaten a lot of sushi + top tier omakase in NYC.
Ishakawa remains at the top of the list. Ate there last night at the sushi bar. Small and intimate -- seats probably about 12. 17 courses for $175. Not cheap, but also not in the $300+ range than comparable omakase spots sometimes charge. This is new age style omakase, meaning each piece is inventive. Each piece is a magical and artistic creation, with absolutely top tier and fresh fish serving as the canvas, and a mix of many other inventive ingredients and flavors as the paint. Each bit is a magical flavor explosion. Absolutely recommend and can't wait to go back soon.
Be the first to ReplyThis was much more than the typical Omakase.
Other places focus on the quality of the fish and make their pieces simple, but sushi ishikawa adds more to their bites and elevates the complexity. This was one of the most fun meals I've had!
Be the first to ReplyLove this place.
It is truly an experience. Each bite was its own version of perfect. High price but the experience is certainly worth it. I've kept photos of the food or so as not to ruin the surprise of how great it all is.
Be the first to ReplyWe love Sushi Ishikawa and were there last night.
We found out that they have changed the menu. Instead of a choice of a 12 course or 15 course meal it's now ONLY A 17 COURSE MEAL. For us, way too much. LET ME SUGGEST that you ask them to prepare your meal without rice so you can eat the whole thing. WE WILL BE BACK but we will be clear that we don't want to be stuffed like a goose.
Be the first to ReplyI want to be fair so I'm leaving two stars for the fresh
I want to be fair so I'm leaving two stars for the fresh and creatively made sushi. They are delicious. However, this is not a great omakase experience. Omakase is supposed to be an intimate experience with the chef chatting with the customers while making great food for them. I know it's not the chef's obligation to talk during the entire 1.5 hour, but he didn't even bothered to small talk. He only introduces the ingredients of each piece indifferently. Ironically, he is being super friendly to another group of customer whose sushi is being made by another chef. So you can probably imagine the awkwardness when he treated five customers with indifference and then turned to chat with the other customer cheerfully. I understand that the customer may be an old friend or a frequent diner, but you really shouldn't try to make him feel special at the expense of the dining experience of other customers. If you are looking for something that's creative and not so expensive, you can try this place but don't bother to sit at the counter. If you want a real omakase, there are numerous places in New York that are MUCH BETTER.
Be the first to ReplyGenerally a mediocre experience.
Service was decidedly unfriendly with dishes often being dropped at the table with barely a few words. Some dishes were good. Most tasted either overwhelmingly of being torched with a butane torch or were overly adorned with distracting extras. The pairings (sake and wine) didn't even pretend to be actually "paired" with anything. Overall an incredibly disappointing $250+ p.p.

The best non-stared omakase EVER! The chef created a really fun dining experience. The material they used was so fresh and tasty. I LOVE the fact they added cavier to various pieces. Would definitely come back again!

I've been to several Omakase in different places and this one did not disappoint. For 16 courses (1 extra) cost was $185 which is fairly typical. The main difference from my other experiences was not sitting at a chef's table/chef's counter. This round was at a table where they brought everything out pre-plated for everyone. Still enjoyable however I'd recommend getting a seat where you get to watch the action. Our server was very knowledgeable and gave recommendations for sake that paired nicely. One in the group had a shellfish allergy and the server was very clear to inform us of the differences when bringing out the various dishes that were modified. The first two pieces I was a bit worried as there seemed to be a big portion of wasabi which I can take in small doses. No one else seemed to have an issue, just me. After the first two selections, I had a much more enjoyable experience. Every bite was a unique and flavorful, everyone enjoyed the meal.

[tldr; 4 star for looking for fancy eats, 2 star for people looking for proper Omakase][Basics] Omakase-only (15 course). I am a sushi advocate, once living by Tsukiji, Tokyo and had daily Omakase for breakfast.[Normal dining] Pretty decent fine dining experience. Although sitting in a slightly crowded greenhouse isn't as pleasing, but the food was good. All courses are served with a separate plate, creating a special experience. All the serving quickly adds up to 2hrs for dinner. Would have given more credit if not for the significant service change once the tent got crowded and the server racial profiling.[Epicure] The menu shows total lack of Omakase ability. EVERY single serve was topped with something, throwing off the delicate taste of the seafood. It is as if they are justifying the cost by loads of caviar and truffle, instead of serving seasonal bests processed at its prime, which is the whole point of Omakase. You won't get served much seasonal or local seafood but instead fancy typical ones (scallop, uni, fatty tuna). This shows lack of seafood knowledge and care for seasonal goods. I would be ashamed to recommend Ishikawa to my Japanese friends if they are looking for real Omakase in NYC. I can only give credit to experimentation on new flavor combincations.
