So sorry I didn't get a chance to go back to Saito's one
So sorry I didn't get a chance to go back to Saito's one last time before he closed. I've been eating his sushi since 1988 when he worked at Katsu. The freshest and best fish ever!!!! The most darling chef ... sorry for those roll eaters...traditional Japanese style sushi only. I'll miss Saito terribly.
Be the first to Replyso sad saito's is closed.
what a sad moment for LA dining. his style of sushi was so special - the butteriest of fish paired with sharp flavors of shiso and yuzu
Be the first to ReplyJust went back an re-read my old review.
I did indeed go until Saito's closed, which was just a couple weeks ago.Los Angeles will be the worse off without this sushi. Pouring one out for the best hole in the wall of all time.
Be the first to ReplyBasically a fraud.
They make up their prices as they go. They have sashimi listed on the menu for 6.50. We ordered two and two rolls and we got a bill for $70! It turns out that 'sashimi is special price' that is not advertised anywhere on the menu - basically whatever they feel like. The rolls are tiny, the decor is bare bones - they have a poster with cheeses of France on the wall. No wonder that the place is deserted. We should have run when we saw that there was noone in there on a Saturday night. Total rip off
Be the first to ReplyNo doubt, the best sushi in LA.
Even better than the super expensives ones. You cannot believe it when you see the storefront. The secret the most well keeped in LA.

Best sushi I have ever had. Manager was very gracious. There was a small mixup with reservation and he comped a round of drinks. Not necessary, but greatly appreciated. Tokyo mule is amazing. Courtnee was our server and she was the best. So happy and attentive. UPDATE we came back the next night because it was so good.

Saito's continues to be the most fresh delicious fish in Los Angeles. Tonight's dinner blew me out of the water. Always sit at the bar, always ask for chefs choice. And nothing makes me happier than reading about his dislike of strollers. You're the best. Forever and always.
Be the first to ReplyI really don't understand the business policies of this
I really don't understand the business policies of this sushi place. My first time inside, I was craving some sushi to go and wanted to place an order for take out. I was a bit concerned at first that there wasn't a single patron dining in the restaurant but figured, the sushi is probably fine. I said I'd like to place an order to go and they told me "No". I was confused and asked why not? And they told me no to go orders. Okay then...I decided to give them another shot and dine in since they have their ridiculous "No Take Out" policy. I sit down and order a sushi roll and a miso soup. They tell me "No" again. I was like what on earth is the reason this time, I'm dining in!!!! They tell me there's a $15 dine in minimum. WTF!!! So as I'm drinking my water, while there is still not another customer in sight, I just get up and leave. How the hell is this place still open when they make it so difficult to get some goddamn sushi???

I have been coming to this place since it opened, and before, when it was Ten-Sushi. I love this place. It's hard to reconcile the bad reviews. Saito worked at Katsu-Ya on Hillhurst until they moved. It's true that he doesn't indulge in faddish sushi items (e.g., a hundred different kinds of rolls). But what he serves is the freshest and presented simply, in true Japanese aesthetic. I've been to many other places, before and after Saito's, and am usually disappointed. This is definitely the place and I'm only 2 miles away.

I repeat what one of the prior reviewers said: PLEASE DO NOT BOTHER WALKING INTO THIS PLACE. Had I checked yelp, I would not have made the unfortunate mistake. We walked in with our stroller, and the chef/owner mumbled something to the server, who subsequently refused to seat us at a table and proceeded to mutter something unintelligible. A guy sitting at the sushi bar actually pulled out the chair next to him and said to my husband, "you can sit here" to which the server said "no". I asked for clarification on what happened and the server stated in broken English that there were "too many orders", despite that the restaurant was not crowded and had a number of seats available. It was extremely, horrifyingly, unapologetically RUDE. Truly appalling and bizarre experience; nothing like this has never happened to me in my life. As a prior reviewer indicated, this sick degenerate chef/owner appears to hate strollers and apparently babies/kids as well. I'm stunned per the reviews that a place that repeatedly insults customers and consistently delivers poor service could stay in business. What business can afford to do that, particularly one that is clearly not thriving? And the more important question to ask yourself...do you want to support such a business? In the same shopping center, there's an indian restaurant and My Vegan Gold, both of which have great food and excellent service. May chef/owner Saito continue bathing in his own dirty filth with his pitiful server, and being king of his tiny disgusting dump.
