Authentic Sushi Restaurant for the Adventuresome Eater
The restaurant is definitely authentic and like a real sushi restaurant in Tokyo. The sushi is serious stuff here for sure. You are served omakase until you tell the chef to stop making sushi and you are charged by the piece. The chu toro was amazing as was the squid stuffed with crab meat. The ikura and uni the freshest ever. The rice was warm like in Tokyo. Some of the dishes are bit strange but that is the authenticity of the restaurant. I do not care for mackeral but the waiter insisted I try (and still did not like it). Service is professional and sake list is excellent. I recommend to anyone who is adventuresome and wants authentic sushi.
Be the first to ReplySushi Sasabune: A Recuring Pilgrimage
I have enjoyed Chef Kumagawa’s sushi since he opened Sushi Sasabune in 1997. The Japanese tradition of Omakase combines the skills of the chef in selection, preparation, and the proper course progression – no menu, just enjoy today’s best. Chef continues to evolve and elevate his sushi. In the early years his omakase was more traditional from the best ever uni to blue fin tuna. Time has also allowed Chef to successfully integrate some local Hawaiian fish and flavors for a one-of-a-kind Omakase. Anyone who loves sushi should make a pilgrimage to Sushi Sasabune. Check the website for a video of how Chef Kumagawa continues to develop his Omakase.

VERY CONDESENDING "Company Policy" - “YOU MUST EAT YOUR SUSHI IN ONE BITE!” Rating: 🌟 One Star I had visited Sushi Sasabune in Honolulu, Hawaii, four times in the past always sitting at their sushi bar and unfortunately, this time, my experience was far from pleasant. Brent, Sushi Chef and Server’s, condescending and arrogant attitude left me feeling verbally abused and upset during my dinner. On two separate occasions, in front of other guests, Brent told me and insisted that I must "eat the sushi in one bite" due to their supposed "company policy." The second time he came around to see how I was eating my sushi, he literally cut me off mid-sentence in my conversation with my husband to reprimand me. Despite explaining that I had a disability and physically could not eat in that manner because my mouth and throat had been reconstructed due to cancer, he responded without any compassion, saying, "Try to do it." Is this guy for real? A restaurant should not dictate how you eat your meal! This lack of understanding and empathy towards my situation was truly disheartening. His dismissive behavior made me feel humiliated and uncomfortable, to the point where I could not take another bite. For a restaurant that charges $200 per person, I expected a much higher level of professionalism and customer service. I believe it is essential for restaurant staff to be accommodating and respectful towards customers in general. Unfortunately, Brent failed to meet even the most basic standards of customer care. It is disappointing to encounter such a negative experience in a high-end establishment like Sushi Sasabune. I strongly urge the management of Sushi Sasabune to address this issue and provide appropriate training to their staff regarding customer service and inclusivity. No one should be made to feel verbally abused or humiliated during their dining experience. In conclusion, I cannot recommend Sushi Sasabune based on my personal encounter with their condescending and unsympathetic behavior. I hope that my review serves as a reminder for the restaurant to prioritize their customers' well-being and ensure a welcoming environment for all.
Be the first to ReplyA nice dinner.
A great place for Omakase. Staff were attentive, efficient, and pleasant. We were warmly greeted as soon as we walked in. And promptly seated for our 6:30pm reservation. The dining area is clean, bright, and nicely decorated. Tables and counter seating are available. We enjoyed every dish. Ingredients were fresh, artfully presented, and delicious. Portions were just right. Each dish was unique. Flavors complemented each other. Staff described every dish as presented. Timing between plates was efficient. The restaurant offers a nice variety of Sake. It was an enjoyable evening.

If you expect Tokyo style Omakase sushi, you will be disappointed. This is a creative sushi, in a positive expression. I felt like they threw curb balls. The worst thing is that the rice is too soft and unnecessary warm, which never happens in authentic sushi restaurants.

Based on stellar reviews, my friend and I were excited to do the Omakse. The first course of big eye tuna and baby yellowtail was great. The next three courses of sushi were not so great. I’d go so far as to say the sushi rice was among the worst I’ve ever had, and I’m including grocery store cooler sushi. At one point, I compared it to practically having the consistency of rice porridge. I asked our server (who didn’t speak English very well) how many more courses there were and what they were. She indicated that there were several more sushi courses, an oyster course, more sushi, and then lobster. I asked if I could skip the additional sushi courses as I was getting full. She said I could not; that I’d have to cancel all the rest of the omakase. I expressed my surprise since omakase is a single price why would they care if I skipped some courses and just had the lobster. I didn’t want to waste the food and the fish thinking perhaps it could be served to another guest since everyone has to do omakase or perhaps an employee could eat it later. Since that was not an option, or so I was told, they continued to bring out more courses many of which the fish was a repeat of what we’d already had (tuna, yellowtail). The “chef’s special” was minced pressed pieces of tuna that were clearly a way to use up scraps of tuna. It had the consistency and taste of canned tuna. At this point, another server took over. I explained to him also that I was full and wanted to skip additional courses except for the final course of lobster. Apparently we were at the second to final course which was the uni (sea urchin) and salmon roe. So for this one, only one was brought out. I was confused as to why it was allowed this time and figure maybe the previous server didn’t understand my request since it was obvious to me that we had a communication challenge. I ask our new server what the dessert options are, and he replies “We only have ice cream, and it’s not included.” The bill is presented, and we are surprised to see each item is priced a la carte as opposed to a single omakase charge which is what we’ve seen at every other Japanese restaurant doing omakase or any other restaurant doing a prix fixe type meal. When the server comes, I asked him why I had indicated that I had asked to skip some courses and was told that wasn’t an option. He says in a snarky, elevated tone, “Well, did we serve that food and did you eat it?” I replied, “Actually, no I did not eat most of it. But more to the point, I had indicated I didn’t want it anyway and was told I had to be served every course or just stop at that point. I am asking you to remove the charges for the items brought after I had said I’d prefer to not eat any more sushi courses.” He angrily grabs the check, crumples it up, and practically shouts, “Fine! Don’t pay for anything!” My friend says, “You’re causing a scene.” as other diners were looking over to see what the source of all the commotion was. He shouts, “IIIIIIIII am causing a scene? YOU are causing a scene.” This was seriously the single most unacceptable dining experiences I’ve ever had.
Be the first to ReplyBest Sushi and Niguri Ever!
Our dining experience on February 20th was beyond all expectations. This is a traditional Tokyo style restaurant serving absolutely delicious omakase style (chef's choice, fixed price) sushi and niguri preparations. We enjoyed 18 different fish selections prepared like nothing we have experienced including restaurants in Japan. This will be a dining experience that will be always remembered!

We read about this secret gem through a local food blogger. We couldn’t have been more thrilled with the omakase experience. The amount of detail and effort put into everydish made it exceptional. Thankyou to Tate for his hospitality and recommendations.
Be the first to ReplyBest meal I’ve ever had
We came Xmas eve 2020, and it was one of the best meals we have ever had. Period. We made it through 15 courses, and the dessert, left in a food coma but totally worth it. If you can, come here and eat.
Be the first to ReplyThe Best Sushi in Honolulu
This is the best sushi in Honolulu! It is pricey so be prepared to pay for the amazing fresh quality! It is a long hike from the hotels in Waikiki so if you are willing to get some cardio and exercise in you can walk here but if not take a Uber. They do things omakase style which means you leave it up to the the sushi chef to decide for you what sushi they will make the special for that meal. The majority do omakase when eating here but if you do not like someone deciding for you, you can decline omakase and just decide for yourself what you'd like to select. Theres a good chance you might see the Celebs on the island eating here or the cast of Hawaii Five-O as they are regulars.

Popular restaurant with the greatest variety of the most fresh fish from around the world. Chefs share their knowledge of the origins of the fish and the sauce and toppings, if any. About 18 pieces of fish for about $150.00 but you can stop when you’ve had enough.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorites
Probably my favorite sushi place in Honolulu. I usually order the "Chef's Choice" and they bring out one dish at a time. And they keep bringing out dishes until you ask them to stop. Purists may not like the warm rice. Parking is in the back (take a photo of your license plate as you will need it to pay, and then leave the receipt on your dashboard). Its expensive and with sake, costs around $125 per person, but I go at least once every time I am in Honolulu.

One of the best meals I’ve had in Hawaii. A must go to place. Go with the Omakase menu, you won’t be disappointed.

Amazing service and such freshness. We really enjoyed the 13 plate tasting dinner, knowledge of the sever, and uniqueness of the sushi. An experience I definitely won't forget.
