Came here last month for omakase.
Maybe it was because i wasn't starved but I didn't want to finish the last two items of the set menu. I wish you could tailor the omakase so that you can get a little less and pay a little less. I'll only come back if I'm hungry. Quality of the sushi was very good and can't complain.

Omakase for people that want to impress their dates with a price tag. It's a bad sign when the waitress explains that I need to scoop up the sushi from the bottom because they make their sushi "soft." Rice is way too warm and that's why the sushi falls apart. Just a shameful experience for $150
Be the first to ReplyScreaming, crying and throwing up at how good this place is.
I would eat here every day if I could but I don't want to ruin the special moment that was my first experience at Sasabune. Every course was the best bite of food I've ever had. Left full but would of ate more if they presented it to me because it was that good.
Be the first to ReplyGood place for no frill sushi.
Very traditional. Prices are a little higher but quality makes up for it. My only issue was the sushi rice tasted dry and often times kept falling apart consistently despite trying different techniques to picking it up. Both my friend and I felt the same. Would probably try one of their other locations. Few pics as attached, nicely displayed.

The sushi chef knows what he is doing! The salmon is so fresh it melts in your mouth! Fav spot in LA! Hidden gem for sure!

Although it appears non descript the restaurant is quite decorative inside. Be aware this is a "traditional" Japanese sushi place so no Spicy tuna rolls or dynamite rolls (they even have a sign to remind you of this)In terms of the food you can order nigiri and cut rolls but the main draw is the lunch special and the Omakase menuFor a total of 5 dishes 2 of which are salad and miso soup, you have a minimalist lunch (at the time of this review $39), although the fish is fresh, if you are hungry you will need to do an In and Out run later!Omakase is $100 or $140 and the number of items depends on the chef's choices but always include soup/salad/ and a hand roll The service was quick, complementary to the food and done in a non-intrusive way. The decor is minimalist as well and pays homage to the chefs and aesthetic of the food Again fresh fish, good service but is lacking in real sustained way to "fill you up", will you have an enjoyable time ,Yes!

I set a business meeting at this restaurant because I heard it was quiet and the food was nice. We ordered the Japanese Omakase special and we really enjoyed it. Service is great and the ambience is quiet for a meeting. The sushi was awesome and very fresh. By the way, it is a lot of food and so you will be very very full when leaving after the Omakase. I will return because this was a very nice place.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good, but the hidden prices were laughable.
It has gone downhill, and that will be my last time there.
Be the first to ReplyI just got back from Japan and was trying to fill the void.
This place helped me fill it. Simple. Quality. Cent wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyIn A Nutshell:-This Sushi Sasabune location is superb.
-Like most reviews have already stated, this is a traditional Japanese restaurant.-One thing that sticks out is the sushi rice they serve w/ their nigiri is warm vs. cold.-The rice is very soft & delicious, which pairs w/ each piece of delicate sushi.-I highly recommend trying their omakase, where the chef will serve you the highlights of the day.-Expect to walk out full, which is always a good thing.-The omakase is enough for two people to share, so it's a perfect date night meal.- You should eat around 35 pieces of sushi according to my handy receipt.-Their Japanese non-caffeinated green tea is perfect on a cold, rainy day & you get tons of free refills.-The highlights we enjoyed were the Santa Barbara Uni, Blue Fin Tuna Toro, the Yellow Tail, the Monk Fish Liver, Salmon Roe Ikura, the Scallop in a half shell, the Mussel/Clam, the Kumamoto oysters & their Blue Crab Hand Rolls.-That's a lot of really good food served for a hearty chef's selection.-Due to the above, this place is $$$$.Overall, this place is worth going to if you are sushi aficionado who enjoys eating the finest seafood, slowly bite by bite.

We got the Omakase experience and we were not so happy, overpriced and sushi is ok, some are very delicious but overall too expensive and the ambiance is very mediocre.

The employees are strange, they employ many restrictions to limit your ordering capacity. We are playing checkers, they are playing chess. It is also expensive for raw fish. But sushi is fresh so that is good. Good.
Be the first to Replyidk what's harder than finding a last minute dinner
idk what's harder than finding a last minute dinner reservation for a quality sushi restaurant on a Monday night in la. but coming to sushi sasabune was a great success. quaint, traditional, no frills, and unassuming makes for an authentic japanese experience that my bf and i were delightfully surprised to have! (also my bf has lived in japan for years, even spent a few of his formative years in tokyo, and can confirm from his palate that this place is legit). we ordered a nice bottle of sake and he got the traditional omakase i got the standard omakase (not a big fan of uni so why pay for it ) and enjoyed every dish that was served looking forward to the next. the cuts of fish are fresh and well proportioned and well paired under the instruction of the waitstaff. i would like to remark tho for a couple of the pieces the rice was a bit on the heavier side, too warm so fell apart easily. overall a great experience for a special night of celebration!
Be the first to ReplyOmakase was completely off.
The rice was way too hot and fell apart almost immediately. The fish is cut far too thin for way too much rice. The quality was mediocre at best. Service was ok. Certainly not a place I'd come back to. Not even factoring the price, it's not even on par with a SUGARFISH. King sushi has a far better omakase. Will not be coming back.Update, stomach was off the next morning, reducing from two stars to one star. No redeeming quality of this place, never going back.

Still a huge fan and still our favorite sushi spot! Nothing else to update but that they serve consistently good, high quality sushi that keeps us coming back.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing experience.
The food prep was exquisite. The atmosphere seemed art deco with the lime green lighting. Felt like time out of time.
Be the first to ReplyLoved the omakase menu.
A killer pricy for what is provided but otherwise stellar. Staff was really on point. Wow. Also received a special dessert for my birthday
Be the first to ReplySushi Sasabune is an omakase only sushi chain.
There were so many good reviews that my wife and I were excited to check this place out for our Valentine's Day Dinner. It's located on the second floor of the building across from CPK.Japanese Omakase: $135/ppOne of the cheaper options for omakase in LA. One thing that was consistent was that the rice was falling apart all over the place as we tried to eat it, which should not happen at all. Some of the items were fresh but were drenched in sauce. This would be my first poor experience spending over $300 at a restaurant. The wasabi was pretty good though. Dessert: $10 for 1 Mille Crepe - tasted like cardboard. Texture was very off from the mille crepe cakes I've had at many other places.Parking: Lot. Free with validation
Be the first to ReplyI've been to a ton of sushi places but Sasabune shot up to
I've been to a ton of sushi places but Sasabune shot up to be one of my favorites in the LA area. A friend recommended me after we were having trouble figuring out what to eat after eating a very late lunch and having a huge drink an hour before we decided to go here. She's been here with her family for over a decade and I was skeptical at first because there's not much surrounding the area and I've only been to the curry place that's right down the street.I'm so glad we decided to go here because the sushi here was phenomenal. I got the butterfish based on her recommendation and if I was hungrier, I would've order three more plates by myself. I don't think I've ever had another fish that was quite as soft after cooking. In addition, whenever I order sweet shrimp at a sushi restaurant, you're usually given the option of either putting the heads in miso or deep-fried. Here they automatically deep fry the head but they also give you the eggs soaked in soy sauce and attached to the body. I've never had sweet shrimp prepared this way before but I am so glad I got to try it. Absolutely delicious.
Be the first to ReplyI went there with some expectations after looking through
I went there with some expectations after looking through yelp comments and all nice photos, but we were pretty disappointed. The waitress was not that attentive and didn't really know the food the restaurant had. She advertised us 2 types of omakase (american and japanese), both are above $100 per person. But when i asked what special fish do they have in there, she didn't really know. The fish she mentioned were normal, like bluefin tuna, uni... imo not worths the price of above $130. The older lady waitress was okay tho. I think she is either the owner or a manager. So we ordered a la carte dishes. Oh the young waitress told us we have to order at least 4 orders per person if we do not choose omakase... Sushi rice was totally wrong in my opinion. There were 3 japanese chefs there... The rice fell apart very easily in almost all bites we ordered. Vinegar taste was barely there. It was as if they just pad good quality fish with normal cooked rice. I asked the old lady why the rice was like that, she said it is the restaurant style.... May be true, but i hate it. The meal was too pricey ($170 including tips) given the service and the food we had. Scallop half shell was great though. Here you go, more nice photos.
Be the first to ReplyI don't like paying a lot for mediocre sushi.
Sasabune is not cheap, but their sushi is worth every single penny you pay. It's my favorite sushi place in LA. The fish is Uber-fresh, the tastes are highly creative. It's a party explosion in your mouth. A gem of a sushi experience.

I had a meeting in the area so I decided to stop by for their omakase. It was absolutely delicious -- every piece right on par with top level establishments. The Ankimo was like butter -- melted in my mouth. They were very happy to hear me speaking a little Japanese to them and were very friendly. The customer service, food quality, and price to value ratio were all solid. I will return here when I'm in the area.
Be the first to ReplyThis was my boyfriend and I's first time.
Inside the restaurant was very peaceful and quiet. The interior and vibe isn't really high end but the price is. It's pricey but you get very good quality fish.Out of all the sushi spots my boyfriend and I have been to and love, this place has got the most freshest fish. Thumbs up for that! Also, one thing that got annoying was how the sushi rice kept breaking apart. Overall, very fresh and good. However, it's not a place we would come often.
Be the first to ReplySuch a sushi shame.
This was the best, was is past tense as I arrived into LAX for my wonderful stop at Sasabune, the best that I have been going to for many many years since their opening on Sawtelle blvd, moved to the high rise on Wilshire to the quaint place where they are now. My last meal there was a 5, as they always were, the week their loved owner died. This trip, the everything was wrong, from dirty bathroom, broken window, sad disposition, to the food. Not to mention the bar is closed. The food was not close to the level of being correct. A vinegar taste to many delicate flavors, the rice hot and not holding together with its delicate balance. The price higher than ever, but, just not good. Sad, I am to other fine places, my seat forever will not be sat in again by me or my company.Sasabune, you had a great run. I hope you can regain your benefactors beliefs and style.Sad
