Never got in the door.
I walked up at 6 pm. The restaurant was empty. I was alone and asked to sit at the sushi bar. He turned me away and told me there were reservations. This is what a Michelin star does to these egotistical restaurants. Dont waste your time. I spent my money down the street at Pietros.

An NYC institution. The omakase will blow your socks off. The attention to detail in every department is riveting to say the least.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive and Underwhelming
Came here for a celebratory meal and was left disappointed. We understand that Sushi Yasuda is a fine dining place and the price match that expectation, but the food did not. We chose the omakase, and most of the pieces are not interesting, or tasted particularly fresh. A few pieces of fish were mushy and on the verge of going bad. Almost every piece of sushi received the same treatment: light brush of soy and yuzu zest. The yuzu was zested so many times that the last few pieces of sushi we had was bitter from the pith.
Perhaps worse than the food was the overall omakase experience. The chef did not really speak to us or explained the pieces we were getting, as opposed to every other omakase experience we've had. One piece of fish had 5-6 pieces of bones in it, and when informed of this, the chef said "it happens," and nothing more. There was not rhyme or reason as to the progression of the pieces we were getting. The pieces of sushi came at alarming rate. It feels very much like a cash grab, throwing as many pieces of sushi at us in the shortest time possible to turnover the seats.
We only do omakase a few times a year so we were hoping that this would be a treat, but it was both expensive and enormously underwhelming. This is hands down the worst omakase experience we've had anywhere. Maybe they just had an off night, but at the price we were charged we will certainly not take another chance with Sushi Yasuda.
Omakase provided some exceptional sushi
Best comparison I've been to is Sushi Nakazawa, though Yasuda lacks "the closer" Egg Custard. As with Nakazawa, some of the sushi was among the best I've ever had, while other pieces were merely average.
We had the Omakase (mp). Though none of us exactly understood their explanation, it involves sashimi in addition, and they "keep asking you if you want more sushi for the omakase to continue". This raised the price to $222 for the Omakase and one salmon terikaki app (with tax and tip dangerously close to $300).
Though we asked for separate checks, they put it all on one bill and then took about half an hour to break it up. It is hard to fathom what was actually served on the Omakase (mp) vs. the Omakase 15. One friend went all-out: with his apps, drinks, and 4 extra pieces past me, his bill was $350 without tax and tip. For me it wsa 19 pieces of sushi and 8 thin sashimi .
Some cooked fish appetizers to begin...though good, none stood out. The sashimi came first and was disappointing; no better than average fare except for the hamachi.
The sushi...some pieces were "wow" and disappeared from taste all too fast. Some had salt crystals on them, which overpowered the fish IMHO. Some were merely average. Some had too-vinegary rice. The sushi was small, but it was at Nakazawa also.
Yasuda did provide me with some varieties of sushi that sounded unfamiliar and indeed tasted unique: it is these that the money spent is well worth it.
Did not honor gift certificate
I booked a seat at the counter for my friend and gave her a $100 โEGift Certificateโ. The restaurant, which Iโve been to many times and really liked up until this point, embarrassed me by telling my friend that the gift certificate could only be used for takeout and she had to pay for her own meal. I am in Europe currently and now I have to ask her how much her meal was, figure out a way to transfer the money to her, and Iโm stuck with a $100 gift card thatโs unused. Iโd expect better from any restaurant, let alone this one. I have spent thousands of dollars at this restaurant over the past few years and do not appreciate this.
Be the first to ReplyPerhaps the best sushi I've had in the U.S.
Simply the best. We were able to get a seat at the sushi counter for the omakase. Worth every penny. Will certainly visit whenever visiting NYC.
Be the first to ReplyEXPENSIVE & ADEQUATE
EXPENSIVE and ADEQUATE. Waiter was hard to communicate with, timing of the food was way off. We were 4. 2 of us had an omakase (12). 2 ate a la carte. They got it all wrong. Food was fine. We have walked by from Pietros for 20 years and always liked the appearance. It's very attractive but for $425 for 4 people only one of whom had sake, we will not be back
Be the first to ReplyGood but overpriced
Sushi was good but overpriced. Not worth the $500 for 3. Appetizers and entrees had instructions about sauces - not sure if I liked that or not. We each had the 12 piece omakase and it was served in 2 parts. Cod appetizer was small. Had no idea monk fish appetizer would be coated then fried. Outdoor seating was great with individualized tenting and good spacing apart.
