Exquisite, skillful omakase experience
We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who are looking for an authentic omakase experience.
Please do yourselves a favor and order the extended omakase.
To order that, don't bother calling them. I have tried personally calling them for 11 times over the span of 3 days and got no answer.
Email is the way to go.
This restaurant only does 2 seatings a night and serves 9 guests each time. Difficult to book is an understatement.
You basically have to book as soon as seats become available, which is one month ahead of the requested date.
They do have sake pairing available, a small wine selection, tea, sparkling or still water.
Our seating was full and 4 out of 9 guests that night were regulars at the place. Sensei Yoshizumi knows 3 of them by name and knows their preference. The courses came out at a good pace, everything were meticulously prepared and only the best available was chosen for the night's menu.
Notable dishes : sweet shrimp sashimi with uni, bonito sashimi, kinmadai, aji, ika, tiger shrimps, baby mackerel.
There were many times during the evening that I was brought close to tear by the flavors in my mouth.
The only thing I wish could improve was the tea. The tea served was very generic and only good at wetting the palates. Maybe that's their goal? To not have the tea stealing the show?
Anyway, just the least flavorful tea out of all the omakase offerings we have been to.
Next time, which I hope will be very soon, we will try the sake offering.
The best sushi in Peninsula
If you can get a reservation, go! There are only 9 seats for two seatings every night, 5 days a week. Book ahead and be ready to enjoy a fantastic sushi meal, as good and better than many high end sushi places in Japan. Bravo Yoshizumi-San

What an wonderful dinner! I'm not a huge sushi fan, but my wife is, and she couldn't stop raving about this place, either before or after. So Sushi Yoshizumi definitely gets her rare stamp of approval.
Every dish was carefully prepared, and so incredibly fresh.
This evening's dinner was to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and the chef and his wife even presented us with roses at the end of our meal. What an amazingly thoughtful and generous gesture.
We loved our meal, and will definitely be back. Thank you Chef Yoshizumi!
Here was our menu:
1) Steamed oyster
2) Bonito
3) Egg custard with snapper and seaweed sauce
4) Black cod with finger lime and grated daikon. Soooo good. The finger lime pods pop in your mouth like vegetarian tobiko
5) Monk fish liver and octopus
6) Japanese seaweed salad
7) Japanese snapper
8) Aji horse mackerel
9) Amberjack
10) Bluefin tuna
11) Toro
12) Wild King Salmon
13) Japanese sardine
14) Massaged scallop with yuzu. Deeelicuous!
15) Uni and fish roe
16) Seared GoldenEye snapper. Subtle smoky flavor
17) Toro hand roll
18) Anago sea eel
19) Miso soup
20) Tamago egg cake
wonderful sushi and intimate experience!
I'd walked past sushi yoshizumi dozens of times without realizing what it was - the understated façade in the middle of an otherwise "everytown"-feeling area didn't stand out. We learned about it from the Michelin Guide and from other sushi chefs in the bay area. We made our reservation months in advance and planned around the occasion. Yoshizumi did not disappoint! The service was exceptional and the head chef is delightfully friendly (not always common in traditional omakase sushi restaurants).
We did the omakase with sake pairing. The sake pairing was *exquisite* a bit on the heavy side (and we are probably heavy drinkers). If I went again I would probably just split one between a couple.
Very fortunate to have Yoshizumi-san in San Mateo
Intimate dining experience as if one is in Japan. Very good quality and very tasty courses (21 dishes / lots of great quality sushi). Chef Yoshizumi brings the best of japan to bay area San Mateo
Be the first to ReplyExtremely delicious sushi
Sushi Yoshizumi is my favorite sushi restaurant in SF Bay Area. Extremely delicious sushi and appetizers are promised here! I’ve eaten at Sushi Yoshizumi 3 times. An entire experience is heavenly every time, from the moment I enter the restaurant to the moment I leave, and the joy of the delicious meal continues very long.
I love both Regular Omakase and Extended Omakase menus. Everything here is made with great care and incredible craftsmanship. Regular Omakase already has delicious appetizers and a good number of amazing sushi. Extended Omakase is like a seasonal fish party. There were so many sushi that I lost counts. Some were the beginning of the season, some were in the top season and some were the end of the season. All were fantastic!
Chef Yoshizumi is wonderful. He calmly serves sushi with smile to each customer. He is a Michelin Star Chef, but he has such a humble demeanor. I enjoy talking to him when he has a moment.
It’s pretty hard to get a reservation because there is only a sushi bar with only 11 seats. But once you get a reservation, it’s guaranteed that you can eat Chef Yoshizumi’s amazing sushi, not someone else’s because he is the only sushi chef here. I can’t wait to go back.
The Best Sushi I've Had in California
Sushi Yoshizumi was a really great experience. There are a lot of high end sushi restaurants in the Bay Area, even a number of Michelin stars, so there is plenty of competition.
Hands down, Sushi Yoshizumi was the best sushi experience I have had in California. The 9 seat place is super intimate (all chef table), Chef Yoshizumi is very personably and has an adorable smile, and he is mesmerizing to watch as he prepares everything. They deserve every bit of their new Michelin Star.
There was not a single dish we didn't enjoy, but the salt water eel, the rosey sea bass, and the squid were 3 of the best pieces of seafood I have had in quite awhile. Textures, wasabi, everything was perfect.
Well worth the price. We left all said and done for about $350, with a couple drinks. Service was of course exquisite. 5 out of 5.
Greatly Enjoyed my Sushi Experience Here
Fantastic sushi experience.
Pros:
The restaurant is small and intimate. I believe they stagger the reservations so that there should be no more than 3 parties in there at any given time. This means you'll receive excellent service from both the staff and the sushi chef.
The dining experience is timed perfectly to your pace. You'll finish 1 nigiri, have a minute or two to reminisce about how delicious it was, and then be given your next, etc.
The sushi itself was delicious. The quality was high and flavors brought out perfectly. I was definitely full at the end of my meal.
Pro/Cons:
You're unlikely to eat something you've never eaten before. It's mostly the same fish you've gotten elsewhere...but better. That could be a con for those looking for an entirely new fish. Personally, I think it goes to show how amazing the Chef is here.
Best Sushi in Northern California
Hands down, Sushi Yoshizumi is the best authentic edomae sushi in Northern California, if not everything in the USA other than perhaps NYC's top places. There's a reason it was awarded a Michelin star after only 5 months in business.
Be the first to ReplyBest Sushi kaiseki course you can get for $ in California
It's not cheep but worth the price tag. You don't get better overall Sushi course dinner in California under $100/person.
Reservation is extremely difficult now. 2 months advance reservation for weekend. They may have last minute cancellation so better to call restaurant around 5:30 pm.
