On a recent visit to Brooklyn, I had the opportunity to try
On a recent visit to Brooklyn, I had the opportunity to try Tanoreen. Since 1998 Tanoreen has been a virtual landmark of Palestinian & Middle Eastern food in the Bay Ridge area, but I haven't yet been there myself. Thanks to my sister and her family, that changed on Saturday. Tanoreen doesn't look remarkable from the outside, and the inside is certainly pleasant, warm and welcoming, but is also not anything exciting. That all changes when you sit down. The service is attentive, professional, friendly and supremely helpful. That last part is important if you're not familiar with the cuisine, the flavors, what foods are complimentary, or simply knowing how much to order, since much of the eating is family style. Our waiter walked us through it all and the meal we had was nothing short of outstanding. Shortly after being seated, the table is served a complimentary basket of house-made pita and flat bread, including a crispy Za'atar flatbread that was really good. They also bring out a small selection of middle eastern spiced pickles, which we asked for more of. For appetizers we choose a mezze platter, which isn't listed on the menu, but they're happy to make it. It includes four items of your choice. We got the Baba ghanoush, Hummus, Mhammara and the Brussels Sprouts, which are coated in, garlic-panko breadcrumbs, fried and drizzled with a tahini-yogurt-pomegranate sauce. You can get that dish on the regular menu. I highly recommend it. We also ordered the Kibbeh Nayyeh, which is raw lamb mixed with fine bulgur and spices. It was served with diced white and red onions and harissa. If you like steak tartare, you'll love this. Anther appetizer we really liked was the Musakhan, a round flatbread topped with sumac-spiced shredded chicken, caramelized onions and toasted almonds. The star of the appetizers (and my favorite part of the meal) was the Fried Cauliflower Steak. While fried cauliflower and cauliflower steak is nothing new, this preparation, which is the chef's creation is the best version of cauliflower that I've ever had. Even the people at our table who where not keen on eating cauliflower thought it was great. It's a two or three-inch slice of cauliflower that's been breaded with panko & parmesan, deep fried and covered with tahini, pomegranate molasses and spicy harissa. It's served with a steak knife and is very much just like a steak. It was crispy and crunchy, while still remaining moist inside, and full of different layers of textures and flavors. The tahini, pomegranate molasses & spicy harissa was the perfect complement, contributing a salty, spicy, tangy, tart and sweet flavor that didn't overwhelm the cauliflower. For entrees we chose the Lamb Fetti and the Lamb Shank Tagine, which was a special. The lamb shank was braised with olives, dried fruits, herbs, saffron, spices and served with rice pilaf. It was tender and very flavorful, but it was honestly not my favorite preparation of this dish. The lamb was excellent, but I couldn't distinguish the olives, dried fruits, herbs, saffron, and spices. The flavors seemed a bit muddled. It was definitely still good, just not what I was expecting. The Lamb Fetti, on the other hand was much more my speed. The best way I can describe it that it's like super flavorful lamb shawarma, with all those familiar spices, that's been shredded and served with toasted pita, rice and vermicelli pilaf. It's topped with yogurt-tahini sauce & almonds. It was delicious. For dessert we ordered the Sahlab; a sweet mastic flavored custard that's garnished with pistachios & rosewater syrup. Sort of middle eastern Panna Cotta. Everyone liked this, but frankly, for me, it paled in comparison to the other dessert that we ordered, which is another creation of the chef, and is the house specialty; the Knafeh. It's crispy shredded filo dough that's layered with sweet cheese and baked until melted and golden brown, and then soaked in orange blossom syrup and pistachios. We ordered the small size and split it between three people. It's undeniably very rich, but thankfully the sweetness from the syrup is subtle rather than cloying. The combination of warm, melty cheese, crunchy filo and sweet, fragrant syrup is nothing short of amazing. Along with the fried cauliflower, it's the dish I would recommend everyone try on their first visit. The entire meal and dining experience was perfection. If I could give Tanoreen more than five stars I would.
Be the first to ReplyI'm not a fan at all.
I was very disappointed after hearing so many rave reviews. My food was cold and bland. Needless to say it did not sit well in my stomach either. I'll pass next time.

One of the best restaurant experiences I've had! The food was outstanding. The service was top tier and our waiter (unfortunately didn't get his name) was so accommodating regarding food allergies and individual preferences even though we came as a party of 10. I will definitely be back!

We get delivery here once a month or so, although in person dining is always preferable. The Fetti is our favorite, either lamb or chicken, along with the hummus, babganoush, fatoush salad and brussel sprouts. It's always delicious and has a take out window, if you want to pick up.
Be the first to ReplyThis is the best middle eastern food on the planet.
If you love the classics like hummus, babaganoush, eggplant dishes, makous peppers, knanef there is nothing like this place

Would love to keep going. Excellent food and beautiful ambiance

I came here for dinner with a friend on a Thursday night since I was in the area. I don't really hang out in Bay Ridge but there seems to be a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants. I decided to check this one out since it had high reviews. I'm so glad I did! The restaurant has a lot of seating and it was pretty crowded even on a Thursday night. We ordered the mini shawarma sliders, the fattoush salad, and the lamb baked eggplant. We were also given a basket of complimentary pita bread and za'atar crackers. I really liked the za'atar crackers more than the food! The shawarma sliders were cute and I appreciated that you can customize whatever toppings you wanted. The fattoush salad was fresh and delicious. The lamb baked eggplant was unique and delicious as well. I really liked the almonds in between the layers. The service was friendly and helpful. I Rolf definitely come back!

I found this establishment to be welcoming and attentive staff. Nice array of beer and signature drinks. For someone who never tried this type of fare found most to extremely delicious. Definitely would go back and sample other entrees and appetizers.

We welcomed a friend back to NYC (Bay Ridge) with a celebratory dinner at Tanoreen! We split a variety of tasty goodies. The cauliflower steak was a must have with it's perfect textures and great blend of flavors. The fatoush salad was also stellar (and so fresh). We also enjoyed the mini-pies (for me, the spinach - yum!), eggplant dish, brussels, and baked kafta. There were only three of us so we had a nice portion of leftovers to go and re-enjoy the next day. In addition to the fantastic food, the service is friendly and space is lovely. Go and be merry!

Be the first to ReplyI've been recommended to visit Tanoreen by several friends
I've been recommended to visit Tanoreen by several friends and patients ever since I moved to Bay Ridge, and I figured it was a bucket list item before I move. I definitely was not disappointed, and I wish I had gone earlier! The food at Tanoreen was very well made, the blend of spices and flavors dance on your tongue. I have to say I was skeptical of the cauliflower steak, but everyone seemed to order it, but it was a great appetizer! And the lamb fetti for the main was even better! The tahini with the pilaf and lamb came together so well, I still crave it today. I will have to say though, either come hungry or come with a friend because the food is very filling, and they come in large portions. The service overall was excellent too. I never found myself having to call the waiter or anything, because they were highly attentive despite being seated outdoors. I think that's what made the experience overall a perfect 5/5.
Be the first to ReplyMy boyfriend and I discovered that Tanoreen is our very own
My boyfriend and I discovered that Tanoreen is our very own neighborhood Michelin star restaurant and came here to celebrate our anniversary. Unlike your average Michelin star restaurant, the prices here are very affordable. That and their lovely outdoor dining area make it a great pic for celebrating a special occasion. We don't eat Middle Eastern food often and chose dishes out of our comfort zone. We ordered cauliflower steak as a starter and lamb fetti. This was more than enough food for the both of us. The cauliflower steak was very unique. Its panko breading and crispy perfection are accentuated by the tahini dressing and harissa sauce. It was very filling. The fetti platter was equally as impressive. The lamb had no gamey flavor, and the roasted almonds added a unique nuttiness to what would otherwise be a typical rice and meat dish. The only thing I didn't like was the gummy, slightly mushy texture of the pilaf and rice. The outstanding service provided by the waitstaff completed the trifecta of this near perfect meal. It was a hot day so we were constantly chugging water, but the waiter never left our glass less than half full. All the staff were so pleasant, polite, and attentive. We couldn't help but marvel at how great the service was.To close out the meal, we wanted to try the Sahlab, a custard with pistachios and rosewater. Sadly, they were sold out so we ordered the Harissa instead. This is a light, crumbly cake with coconut flakes and rosewater. It was a good light dessert to end the meal.I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Tanoreen to anyone looking for a wonderful place to dine.

Be the first to ReplyCannot say enough good things about this restaurant.
They were able to fit a party of 11 people last minute on a Friday evening. The food is amazing and the Knafeh dessert is a must try! The restaurant just has a very relaxed vibe and the servers were all very attentive.

Just had dinner last night with family on the outdoor patio here. Food was really tasty--the halloumi watermelon salad with grapes and fresh figs was so, so good! Simple kabab plate was absolutely delicious! The harissa cake was also very delicate and yet comforting like a dessert made in your childhood. Fresh flowers and herbs in the garden surrounding your table and a truly professional wait staff who didn't rush you to clear the table made this a very delightful night out. Like all truly good places, of course one of the owners was there questioning diners: always the mark of a place worth returning to again and again (which I will!).
Be the first to ReplyWe have been walking past this place for a few months, ever
We have been walking past this place for a few months, ever since we moved to the neighborhood, and decided our anniversary was a fine time to try it out. We decided to share everything, so we ordered a fatoush salad, the fried halloumi cheese plate, and the grilled meat platter. We also shared a nice bottle of Grenache red.The halloumi arrived first, and was excellent, served with grilled tomato, olives and crispy flatbread with zaatar. So tasty, smooth, almost meaty in texture, and delicious. Then the fatoush arrived, and was delicious too- perfectly dressed tomato, onion, greens, and flatbread croutons- lemony, bright, wonderful textures in your mouth, and so good. Last, the main course, of course. A platter of grilled sausage, beef, chicken, and filet mignon with grilled tomato, grilled pearl onions, and perfectly seasoned rice. Oh and the garlic sauce! My only, lone complaint is that what we didn't finish, they didn't offer to pack up for us. I thought it was a given when you don't finish your meal that it is offered to be packed up. We easily had a nice lunch left over, but ah well. Actually, I do have one more complaint, but that is easily rectified- by the time our dinner was done, it had become extremely loud in the restaurant. The floors are stone, the walls are square with no dampening materials. So the best way to avoid that is to go early or go late. The service was superb, and the owner walked around, touching tables at one point, which is always a nice thing. In fact, I used to own 3 restaurants in seattle, and one of them was a deli-cafe with wine, books, and the odd cooking items for sale. And I used to sell the Tanoreen cookbooks! Small world. I recommend going here. The food is spot on, and he service is great. Just ask for your leftovers to go

I didn't expect much when I searched for restaurants in Bay Ridge for lunch - was I surprised! Both the food and the service were outstanding. The service was attentive and personal. The food was full of flavor; well prepared; different in flavors across dishes; plentiful and satisfying. Congrats on a really wonderful experience of great food with attentive and charming service.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a six-star place, no fooling.
Don't let the unflashy room fool you. Tanoreen has delicious, well-seasoned, lively, colorful food -- full of texture and surprises, a cuisine that isn't the same old Mexican or Thai. What's more, the room is warm and welcoming and the staff terribly congenial. I've eaten there a half-dozen times and the level of pleasure has always been consistent, no disappointments. Yesterday my wife and I had a party there for fifty guests, and everything was, if you can imagine, even better, and everyone was thrilled to have been at Tanoreen. We will be back!

The food was really good and flavorful! So many options to choose from! For appetizer we had the MUSAKHAN which is shredded chicken flatbread. For the entrees, we had KABOB which was ground lamb and Fetti. The kabob would paired well with some hot sauce but still good! The fetti had a lot of flavor which I enjoyed. Staff is very welcoming ! Would definitely go again!
