A high end Japanese tempura experience without having to fly to Japan.
After a welcoming entrance, the ambiance is old school traditional Japanese restaurant of yore, not fancy. The $280 price made me skeptical, but the very refined tempura and accompanying courses left us very satisfied and already thinking about who to invite next time to share the experience. Nowadays it seems everything is overpriced, but here at least we were not disappointed. As good as top tempura in Tokyo. Feeling slightly overstuffed from the abundance of courses. My favorites - the foie gras chawanmushi (silky egg custard with foie gras flavor but no actual piece of foie gras which I enjoyed more, topped with snow crab) , the matsutake mushroom tempura, the triple caramelized sweet potato that took sweet potato tempura to the next level almost melting and the tencha. I’m a fan of tea over rice. This one topped with tempura and green tea salt. The chef seemed very pleasant which is always a plus.

Quiet and calm little gem of a tempura restaurant. Not many seats so try hard to reserve. The service is unobtrusive and very polite. The lunch special is a good way to sample the chef’s art. Delicate and not oily. Each piece is presented one by one. Definitely worth a visit.

By far the best tempera I ever eaten. Each piece is expertly fried by the chef and his assistant. Omakase at chef’s bar is the way to go to see all the action. The vibe is amazing and cozy and service quite impeccable. I would abstain from getting extra pieces because there is more than enough food in Omakase menu. I should be coming back again.

Amazing and authentic tempura dining
Delightful, authentic, highest quality ingredients and very attentive service. We felt as if we had been transported to a wonderful tempura restaurant in Japan for just a few hours. The chawanmushi infused with foie gras, Kuruma ebi shrimp tempura were especially good.

Big fan of Tempura Matsui. Have to point out the excellent service this restaurant provides, from the initial check-in of the coats, to the attentiveness of the wait staff, to the constant refilling of drinks, and the explanations of each dish and how to best consume them. The quality of the ingredients were top notch, leading to top notch tempura. The side dishes were also impressive.

San is the reason to come here! Even with the holiday mess this place is serene and stylish. Book early! Go mid afternoon before the chefs take lunch. Relax and appreciate your quality ingredients and preparation. Splurge for the lobster tempura. High Point: service, methodical service, serving trays, sauces, and ingredients Low Point: we had to leave! Unique Point: New York's only and best tempura bar! Toto toilets!

This gem is almost like being in Japan. They specialize in tempura which was expertly crafted and served. My only disappointment was that they do not serve the tempura individually, course by course, like in Japan. Other than that, everything was authentic and delicious and the service refined.

After having lived in Tokyo for many years, I felt nothing could compare as far as authentic Japanese Tempura. Well, I learned otherwise. Tempura Matsui proved that! Everything about the rest. Was perfect!! The
Ambiance and decor were first rate. The food and service was impeccable. It is small and very intimate. Delightful dinning experience! The ladies room was a sight to behold! The heated toilet seat left a lasting impression!
Traditional Japanese style tempura!
You could have the real Japanese style Tempura here.
I recommend the counter table so you can enjoy the live show of cooking tempura right in front of you.
Before they serve tempura, you could have some wonderful authentic Japanese style appetizers
Price is a bit expensive but it worth it.
My Dear (very) tempura
Tempura Matsui is certainly a fine, Michelin starred restaurant. Tempura lovers will appreciate the exquisite texture of the fried paste, an extremely thin, tasty and light coating, covering ultra fresh ingredients, BUT, all this comes at an abnormally high price.
There are 3 fixed price menus and I would advise going for the cheapest. The price difference, important, is not justified by what you get extra, noticeably a sashimi appetizer, fresh but not exceptional, that will cost you a preposterous amount of money.
Sitting at the bar (recommended) you can watch the two cooks at work, as they skilfully craft the tempuras right under your eyes.
Yet, the atmosphere is icy, as too often in high-end Japanese places. Obviously, the chefs are not there for exchanging smiles and the lady “Maitre d’Hotel” watching over each of your movements is more intimidating than entertaining.
Good Japanese restaurants in NY are now more expensive than their counterparts in Tokyo and the “de luxe” omakase, popularized by the master Jiro Ono, has inspired his New-Yorker alter-egos who run the same formula, only for a much higher price, although none of them can compare with the Ginza magnificent chef..
Tempura Matsui is a good example of this unfortunate trend. U I had even better tempura in Japan, particularly in Nara old town (meaning being transported in a Kurosawa movie) for a much lower price...
I was told that lunch is a more affordable treat.
