I want to love Tempura Matsui because the staff/service was phenomenal, the place had an intimate vibe with great lighting and low noise levels, and it's a freaking 1 star Michelin tempura place (how common are these?). The tempura technique and food were great, but not worth the $90 lunch price and certainly not worth the new increased lunch price of $160 (unless they've made significant modifications). You better be vegetarian leaning as 70% of these dishes are single fried pieces of veggies. At that price range, I was expecting a lot more protein so I felt quite ripped off. The food was good, don't get me wrong, but feels like they slapped on a premium for their airy tempura frying technique that's commonplace in Japan for a fraction of the price. TLDR; great tempura, but not at this price range, unless you have money to spend and/or pregame heavily beforehand so you can pretend you had a full meal at this price.
