Great Food
We went during the week and had a great time. The food was excellent and I thought the pricing was very fair. Altho, we were not offered drinks or even refilled our water. The server was nice enough but she really just sat plates down and walked away. Had the service been better this would be a 5 star review - the food was excellent!!
Be the first to ReplyGood food, service could use some improvement
We purposely arrived at Thai X-ing when they opened for dinner hoping we could get a table without reservations. We did this so we could order ala-carte instead of getting the fixed menu. We were taken to a table upstairs. A waitress took our order, and three items in a row I tried to order off of the relatively small menu they didn’t have. I finally asked the waitress to tell me what they did have, and ordered from that. I ordered the Panang curry with beef, and my husband ordered the pompano (fish). We also ordered the papaya salad as an appetizer.
When the waitress brought our appetizer salad, she set it down on the table and then said that the pompano comes with papaya salad, so do we want this one. I wasn’t sure why she didn’t tell us this when we ordered it, but we tried to ask her if it was a full papaya salad or just some on the side. We couldn’t understand her answer, so we decided to keep the appetizer salad so that both my husband and I could share it. Then when the meals came out, not only did it turn out we had another full papaya salad, but my beef curry also came with a (smaller) side of papaya salad.
Once the meals were brought over, our waitress never checked in again. We ended up sitting for over 30 minutes just waiting for her to offer dessert or coffee or bring us a check. Eventually I was able to make eye contact and get our check.
The food was good, though not too much different than other Thai restaurants in the city. Between that and the service, I’d say it was an average experience.
Excellent Meal!
The restaurant is family run and dishes out an authentic pre-fix tasting menu (for just $45). It’s a small cozy location with two main waiters who are constantly on the move bringing new dishes to try. If you have a question, simply ask. This isn’t meant to be a fine dining experience - you come for the food and it is delicious! By the way, you can BYOB for a $5 corkage fee.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing. OK food, sub-par service.
I love Thai food. We eat it all the time in Rockville and Wheaton. It's our go-to choice when travelling because it is consistently good. So imagine my disappointment to rate Thai X-ing a 2 overall. I really wanted it to be a 5.
Ate here on a Sunday evening with spouse and daughter who lives in Shaw. This restaurant has been written up positively many times, and is in daughter's neighborhood, so I've been wanting to eat here for over a year. We learned that Sunday evening was a vegetarian evening, and we are non-meat eaters, so this sounded perfect.
We entered, saw the sign saying to come upstairs. Thankfully none of us is elderly or disabled, so no problem, heaven help those who are.
No host to greet, we happened to catch the eye of one of the servers carrying food. She looked around, spotted a table, and directed us to go there, and she continued on with her tasks, quite informal.
We received water immediately, then sat for 10 minutes or so, no action. No menu. No asking if we wanted anything to drink. I flagged down a server, who asked us if we wanted to see a drink menu. We said yes, and a food menu too. She explained that Sunday evening is a fixed price vegetarian menu, ok this is good for us we thought. No sign showing that, no word from anyone as we were seated, it was just expected that if you come on a Sunday night, you know this. She brought a drink menu, I ordered a beer from a selection of two excellent local breweries and one international. Others ordered Thai iced tea.
The food arrived, starting with a spicy soup. My wife can't eat spicy food, it makes her choke. It was spicy, with some taste, and had some vegetables in it including kaffir leaves (inedible) and what seemed to be lemongrass (inedible), so I had to pick out the inedible elements and stack them on my plate.
Then other dishes came. A vinegary noodle dish that was too spicy for spouse. Fresh vegetable rolls in a delicious peanut sauce. Another vinegary noodle dish that was too spicy for spouse. A mushroom dish that was ok. A tofu dish in a curry sauce which was ok. A squash dish in a curry sauce (apparently this dish was rated by the Washington Post among 60 must-have dishes) which was ok.
Again, we are non-meat eaters, and Thai is among our favorite cuisines. This dining experience should have been a slam-dunk.
As a sign of how much we enjoyed the food, there was a lot of food left on the serving plates uneaten. In other words, nobody was going back for more. And amazingly, none of the servers or the host asked us if we enjoyed our meal!
We had enough, had been there awhile, didn't particularly enjoy the food, service was slow and not particularly charming. We felt full, yet unsatisfied. We were ready to go home. I informed a server that we were ready for our check and, if it comes as part of the meal, dessert. Then suddenly another dish appears: pad see euw. We have had pad see euw at many restaurants, and it's our daughter's go-to dish. It was ok. Spouse and daughter had a couple of bites and said enough. They said it was too sweet, I just thought it was pedestrian.
Dessert was sticky rice with mango, which the others loved. This dish they finished, I had none.
Bill came. $113 for 3 x $30 fixed price vegetarian meals, and $23 for the drinks and tax. I was shocked. I hadn't known the fixed price was $30. And we came away with not a single dish that we raved over, and experienced impersonal slow service with servers who didn't seem to know English.
Ratings: food 2, atmosphere 3, service 2, value 1, for an overall score of 2. Given the outstanding Thai restaurants in the area, I will not be returning here anytime soon.
Decent, but not fantastic
We went here on the recommendation of a friend and after a bit of confusion regarding the location, found this nicely decorated space. We sat down and the servers started bringing food almost immediately. We had a salad course, several curries, soup, pad Thai, and sticky rice with mango for dessert. The menu is set, so no need to dither over what to eat. The food was good, but the flavors were not particularly refined or unique. And we were served enough food for a much larger party. Overall, a pleasant experience but I have had finer Thai dining experiences.
Be the first to ReplyFun place to take out-of-town visitors
The food at Thai Xing is delicious, but fair warning - the menu never changes. The real appeal is bringing friends and family who've never been for an enjoyable, chef's choice dinner. As soon as you sit down, the food starts coming out in waves...and it's a lot of food. The spicy green been salad is one my favorites -- and is very spicy. Another perk: you can bring your own wine and pay a $5 corkage fee, which is quite reasonable. We saw another group bring in an entire case of wine! You cannot bring your own beer, but they do have beer and wine for sale as well.
Be the first to ReplyNot good. Hype is all it is.
I had been hearing about Thai Xing for years and finally made a reservation for a Saturday evening. The restaurant is a small hole in the wall, usually a good thing. We were seated immediately, and almost as soon as we sat down our first dishes came out. No one had asked us if we wanted anything to drink yet, and as the server walked away we had to shout at her to come back to take our order. Never got better.
1st couse was a soup (Tom Ka) although our server was unable to tell us this - she obviously had no idea what she was serving other than it was "soup." It was served in the tiniest cup, which would have been fine except that in that tiny cup were 3 inch stalks of celery and one butterflied shrimp with no flavor. Also served at the same time was a plate of cold chicken satay (lukewarm I should say) of which I have had MUCH better and a green mango salad. Again, when this course of three dishes came out, the server simply dropped it all on the table and said "soup."
Next came the pumpkin curry, salmon in a green curry, and a larb dish. The salmon dish was cooked pretty well, but the curry sauce was super thin and just drizzled on the top - not enough to really get much flavor. The pumpkin curry had great flavor, but the pumpkin itself was in such gigantic chunks that the curry could not actually penetrate it, so most of the pumpkin just tasted like that - plain pumpkin. The larb, which was described as "meat salad" was chicken I think, but had black olives and some other odd ingredients - things I have never seen in a Thai dish anywhere, including Thailand! Definitely not great.
The "grand finale" was pad thai - called "noodles" by the server. The protein here was tofu, which I would normally like, but it was just awfully cooked and flavorless. Tasted like they had only used sugar and nothing else to flavor the entire dish. They should have just used dried shrimp so that it had a little flavor. We ate a couple bites of this one and left the rest.
Mango sticky rice was the dessert. I love mango sticky rice. But Thai Xing even ruined this for me. The mango was actually just the mango seed with a sliver of actual mango on top with a side of blueberries and strawberries. The sticky rice was fine though.
On top of all of the bad food, there was a cockroach on the wall during the entire meal. It kept moving between the girl at the table next to me and my head. And then the final bill for meals for 2 and one glass of wine was $100. We should have ordered takeout.
Not sure if this place was ever good, or just visited by a lot of people who don't know what good Thai food is, but I will NEVER go back. The entire experience was miserable. Afterwards, I told some friends about it and they all said the same thing - that it had gone way down hill. The way it used to be described is like Little Serow - which is actually an amazing experience with great food that is explained to you and great personal service in a clean and cute venue. And it costs the same. So go there for your inventive prix fix five star thai experience.
Authentic Thai, served family-style
This unassuming, family-run restaurant is a neighborhood gem, serving up traditional Thai food rather than the Thai-American that is so common. They offer an a la carte menu, but the chef's menu is the way to go. These are home-style dishes that have been passed down through generations, so you're getting a real taste of Thailand. And you get a lot of food, five or six dishes plus sticky rice and mango for dessert. The other benefit of the chef's menu is that the food starts coming immediately.
The menu changes day to day, but they're always serving up some delicious favorites, like the curry pumpkin. On Sunday night, the menu is all vegetarian, so you can impress your vegetarian friends by bringing hem here. Tuesday is vegetarian plus fish. Check the website for the latest. Some dishes can be rather spicy, but others are not and you can ask them to tone down the spice if that suits you better.
This is a great, locally owned restaurant that delivers authentic food in an attractive setting. Definitely worth a visit!
Horrible service, constant fire alarm noise
The service here was unbelievably bad. They brought out random dishes without telling the group what they were or what what in them, what order to eat or how many courses they were serving. On top of that, throughout dinner, the fire alarm went off 9 different times. The staff never apologized and did not give us a discount for the inconvenience. In fact, the manager and waiters were rude when I asked if the fire alarm was being fixed after the 6th time. Although the food was good, this was such a disappointing experience. I do not recommend for any type of dinner, gathering or event. I would hope management reads this and addresses appropriately.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals of my life!
One of my favorite meals of all time at Thai X-ing which serves authentic Thai food in a small, intimate setting. Five of us ordered the chef’s menu ($40 per person on Friday and Saturday, $30 per person on other days) and were brought about six or seven traditional, home-style dishes to share, including dessert. The menu changes daily, but they always serve the pumpkin curry, which deservedly was included in the Washington Post’s “Top 40 Dishes You Shouldn’t Live Without.” Every single dish was unique and delicious. If you’re a vegetarian, Sundays are vegetarian only days. Another great aspect of Thai X-ing is that it is BYOB with only $5 corkage fees so we were able to buy multiple bottles of wine around the corner to enjoy with our dinner. Reservations strongly recommended.
