If you hate the Vegas strip restaurants )and prices) as much as I do, this is your shangri-la.Amazing vietnamiese fusion, creativity and friendly serviceWe ordered the poached pear salad recommended by our server, hummus and octopus. One better than the next, but the hummus takes the prize. Then we ordered the hanger steak, short ribs and seafood soup that would shame the best cioppinos or bouillabaises costing 10x morePrices are adequate, wine selection very good20' Uber ride from our hotel, not too bad.Congratulations to this gem!

Lackluster experience- kid size portions, overpriced & definitely not Vietnamese. ** FOOD: Vegan Vietnamese Glass Noodles ($19): hard pass! Sauce was sticky & overly sweet (like syrup), served with a few veggies on top. There is nothing Viet about this dish- the sauce itself is Korean. This dish also happens to be the ONLY vegan option on the entire menu (which is fine, but they should probably update their info to reflect such). Seafood Stew ($32): Hard pass! It was 2 cups of broth, exactly 6 mussels, a few tiny cubes of soft tofu (probably pre packaged) and some shredded cabbage with rice cakes floating around. Seriously? I was shocked- where's the rest of my meal? I told the waitress I had a shrimp allergy- I assumed chef would maybe give me more mussels (or tofu or veggies) to offset the missing shrimp. Nope! Or maybe they did... which means it's probably even more pathetic as is. So I asked for a side of rice- which was the ONLY winner that night- $3 for a scoop. Fine. Stew (which was more of a soup) was nothing special. I happen to love soondubu but this missed the mark. Salty, watered down & lacked sophisticated flavors- neither hearty nor robust to be called a stew. **SERVICE: was really hoping to love this place & support my Viet peeps but man, what a let down. We interacted with 3 people- each one gave "I don't want to be here vibes". They weren't busy, most of the staff (6 ppl or so), we're more or less huddled around the bar just standing and talking. From the moment we received our entrees to the moment we asked for the check- no one asked if we were enjoying the food. Drops off check- "how was the food?" (we said it was just okay) "ok." Takes the dishes and walks away. We usually give feedback but it didn't seem like she really cared anyway. She also forgot our limes- no big deal. **PRICE: 2 people, 2 entrees, 2 drinks: $120 after tax & 20% tip. Strip prices but this place is located in a strip mall, behind a Sonic drive-thru. Come on. We both left hungry & made a sandwich when we got home. You've been warned.

Yes she was on Top Chef and yes she was our favorite on the show. No she did not win and we were sad. That's where this stops. We live in the area and wanted so much to try Black Sheep. So last weekend we did. It was nice that Chef greeted us and sat us but then again it's her place. We tried to make conversation but there was none of that. The place was not busy so she was not in the weeds. We were sat and we reviewed the menu. I am not very picky but not one item jumped up and said "HEY YOU GOTTA TRY THIS". And I really tried. We were so excited about dining here that we had expectations in line with what we knew about Chef. There were 4 of us so we ordered. I ended up with 2 Appetizers as my meal one salad and one as main course. Others got apps and main. Truly there was nothing exciting and certainly not anything to write home about. Chef was making drinks and setting tables. And we again tried to make conversation and were coldly shut down. I could see if they were just overwhelmed and she was in the kitchen but she was making cocktails, and there was a bartender who clearly was handling the drink orders just fine. The place is small and intimate and very nice. The wait staff were attentive and helpful. But being someone who was a GM at multiple restaurants, hospitality is the industry and we did not feel the hospitality from the key player and owner. Sorry Chef, we were not impressed and may be you were having a bad day but we were not feeling it. Will or would we return? Half the jury says no the other half says meh.

I definitely like the concept here - there are a few items that I'd like to come back for. And the service was great as well! Salmon Skin Tacos (4.5/5): I was expecting some kind of greasy taste since the salmon skin looked deep-fried, but there was none at all. One bite, and I felt burst of flavors - the sharpness in seasoning, the mellowness in texture. Loved it.Steak Tartare (4.5/5): Another appetizer that I really liked. Tartare was served on beef crisps - not sure how they got beef into such a crispy, fluffy state but that was delicious for sure. The tartare was impressive as well, and the entire dish was just such a great match.Fried Rainbow Trout (4/5): The trout was fried to perfect - crispy on the outside, yet tender and flavorful in the inside. The vinegar sauce tasted great too. I did wish it came with the sauce separately; the fried trout can turn soggy very quickly when soaked in soup. Chocolate Tres Leches Cake (3.5/5): It was a great ending to the meal. The body of the cake was slightly different from other tres leches cake I've tried (maybe denser?), but being drenched in cream gave it enough moist and it was tasty. My favorite part was the coffee cream on the side; actually I wish they would make a coffee tres leches cake!Lamb dumpling (2/5): I really wanted to like it, but the dumpling skin was just too thick and too chewy. It also absorbed too much ponzu sauce which overshadowed the taste of lamb. Nevertheless it was interesting combination.Bao Slider (1/5): I think it's good idea but poor execution; maybe we were just unlucky - the pork sausage was overcooked. When it was served in front of me, I could smell something burnt (and I thought it was from the kitchen!). When tasting it, the sausage tasted bitter and clearly...overburnt. I was a little surprised they served it as-is, when there is such an obvious burning scent.
Be the first to ReplyWas expecting much more from this place.
The food was okay, nothing to write home about. The place says it's Vietnamese but didn't really get any notes of it in the food. The best thing we had were the lamb dumplings, and they were good, nothing special. The short rib lacked deep flavor, and the fish, which was supposed to be the star, was also very bland. The salmon skin tacos were also very surface level in flavor. What really made this place somewhere we won't ever come back to is the service. It was obvious only 2 servers were waiting tables and our server put us at the bottom of his priority list. We were maybe checked on 3-4 times the whole dinner, and this is including taking orders. The server at the other tables was doing much better keeping up with his patrons. For the ambiance and price you're paying for dinner, the serving definitely needs to be up to par, and I can confidently say the place was very short staffed for the amount of people there. Our dinner was probably 45 minutes longer than it should have been. We were pretty frustrated leaving the Black Sheep.

My friends and colleagues always ask me how I get to meet all of these top chefs. I tell them, first you order the entire menu, or most of it, then you just ask if they are in and down to capture a photo for the gram. Like Gary Vee likes to say, "Give Give Give then Ask!" Also it helps not to be a demanding dbag, and treat their staff with the highest level of respect for the hard job they are doing to serve your table. It's not hard. Always be nice. This time out we got to meet Chef Jamie Tran "Chef of the Year" of Black Sheep Vegas which also won an "Eater Award for Restaurant of the Year!" Our feast included the Grilled Spanish Octopus [asparagus, black sesame seeds, crispy rice ginger sambal sauce], Fried Beef Crisps [thai chili tajin dust, chili lime sauce], Steak Tartare [asian pear, egg yolk aioli, beef crisps, pickled thai chili, julienne green onions], Salmon Skin Tacos [two salmon skin tacos filled w/ salmon belly tartare, tobiko, smoked shishito peppers micro cilantro], Imperial Rolls [duroc pork & shrimp, pickled heirloom carrots & radish, yellow frisee salad], Hamachi Crudo [rayu sauce, dragon fruit, pickled pearl onion, bubu arare], Braised Pork Jowl [turmeric flat noodle, saute chinese broccoli, sesame seed crumble, spicy garlic chili oil], Slow Braised Short Rib [kimchi fried rice, green scallions, sesame seed, pickled red radish, organic sunny side up egg], Fried Whole Rainbow Trout [sautéed rainbow swiss chard, steamed jasmine rice, ginger & rice wine vinegar sauce], Seared Duck Breast [curry, roasted heirloom carrots, marble potato, pearl onion, green daikon], and for dessert the Saigon Cinnamon Roll [Vanilla Infused Condensed Milk]. I try everything at least once, so I had to go for those tacos. Trust me, they are an intriguing robust flavor you don't want to miss. The tartare on beef skins was wild too, very unique, very flavorful. The trout stole the show though. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, I could have eaten at least three of them! If you haven't been here, add it to your list friends!

Beyond the high-quality, elevated dishes the service was attentive & sincere. A wonderful variety of elevated, shareable dishes -- salmon skin tacos are a must and the lamb dumplings were unexpected and delicious. Perfect for a date night or just a night out alone.

We came here on a whim because we couldn't decide where to go, from the outside it doesn't look like much but once you go inside it looks stunning. We got there and there was another couple who walked in behind us & we got sat at the same time. the food was delicious i got the glass noodles and my date ended up getting the duck, both were divine. The only reason as to why i'm giving three stars is because by the time we were getting our drinks the couple who sat at the same time we did was already eating their dinner, the server did apologize for how long our drinks alone were taking.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for a birthday dinner while I was in Vegas.
The menu is limited and changes so don't be surprised if something on Yelp is no longer available. My must haves were: poached pear salad, steak tartare and yuzu panacotta (the best)! We got the rib eye entree to share however we asked for medium and it was basically well done.

If you ever want to see a real life example of "the fish rots from the head" then go to black sheep. The service was absolutely dismal and we watched famous chef Jamie Tran take shot after shot with the staff. First we were informed by the bartender that we are required to order our entire dinner all at one time. That's right, all the courses all at once. Apparently something about the kitchen not being able to handle orders whenever WE wanted to order. And then she forgot about us....... We tried flagging down the bartender and owner Jamie with no luck. They were too busy figuring out what shots each of the staff member were going to take.Fast forward later on when we ordered a second round of drinks and dessert with the bartender. The drinks came but 20+ minutes later no dessert. Sensing a mishap, we gently mentioned to the owner that we haven't seen our dessert yet. Turns out it was she realized that it was never rang in! (Must have been all the shots!)Take your money and go elsewhere.

Wow. No wonder this place received a James Beard nomination. This food is stand out, and you can't go wrong with whatever you order. Ask the server for recommendations for drinks that go with the meal.

Ever since seeing Chef Jamie on Top Chef, I have had her restaurant- Black Sheep- on my foodie adventure list and tonight it became a reality. My boyfriend always rates things ... so of the ahhhhmazing food we ate (every bite exceptional) our top choices are: #1 imperial rolls, #2 steak tartare, #3 fried whole rainbow trout #4 salmon skin tacos (which by the way are outstanding)! My advice - go and go often!!!!I also need to acknowledge the outstanding staff! When you have exceptional service it is a value that trickles down. I met Chef Jamie, working behind the bar and when I complimented her on her food she said "it's a team effort " and that is the mark of an exceptional leader ... so now I love her even more and hope you will go experience exceptional food and exceptional service !!

The Black Sheep has great food and cocktails! The atmosphere is small/intimate and is a perfect place for great quality food off the strip! The menu isn't very big, but everything that I've tried on it has been great! Will definitely be returning again!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic place.
Food is amazing and service second to none. Would recommend it to everyone.
Be the first to ReplyI try to come here for dinner every time I'm in Las Vegas
I try to come here for dinner every time I'm in Las Vegas for work. It's worth every minute of the drive. The food is always top notch. Get there early for the salmon skin tacos before they sell out for the night. The bar is small, but a great seat if Jocelyn is bartending -- she knows her stuff and will never steer you wrong in a cocktail or a glass of wine.
Be the first to ReplySaw this place on Netflix and had to try it.
Made an early reservation and was the first group inside. Service: very pleasant, no complaints. Waiter made recommendations and had the typical chitchat that you would expect. Food: this is where my review starts to go down hill. Don't get me wrong, the flavors were pretty good for a few dishes. The biggest issue I had was that the cuisine is trying to be like upscale tapas next to a Carl's Jr, but with the LV strip prices, I ordered two orders of the baos; these things are literally half-dollar size bites. Not kidding. Total was $22 for 4 bites. It tasted pretty good, though. Had the salmon skin tacos as well. $12 for two pieces that were just as small. Pear salad - way too sweet. Plus goat cheese. Yuck. Like $12?Steak tartare- probably the best dish. Basically two big fried chips with seasoning and raw beef. $14. Fried trout - not crispy; basically whole, boneless fish with soy sauce and veggies. $24. Pork jowl - pure fat, on top of some of some flat noodles. Decent sauce. Almost $30. Short rib - decent. Not sure it was worth it. Almost $30. Two diet Cokes; three cocktails. Total damage with tax & tip = $250. Oof. It was very hard to resist going next door to Jersey Mike's and getting a $15 sub afterwards. Glad I got to try it but I cannot recommend this place.

I was in town visiting relatives and was fortunate to discover The Black Sheep where I had an amazing and innovative dinner. The highlight of the meal were the Salmon Skin Tacos which were both unique and delicious. The Vegan Scallion Pancakes were also amazing and as a meat-eater I didn't miss that they didn't have meat on them. Will certainly return when I'm next in town.
Be the first to ReplySolid restaurant.
Attentive service. Flavors didn't seem very Vietnamese-inspired though, but other than that it was overall delicious. Table favorites were:- Salmon tacos- Hamachi crudo - Bao sliders- Whole fried rainbow fish trout (conveniently deboned!)- Pork jowl (my favorite, melt in your mouth!)Would definitely come back again to try more items!

Meh. This place gets a lot of press but I found it insipid and dull. Slopping bacon, oil, and salt all over everything is just so dull and unimaginative. Ate here with 3 other people and tried quite a few dishes; nothing worth going back for IMHO. Vegetables were greasy -- rather than letting acidity and bitterness contrast with the saltiness and fattiness of the meat-centered menu, they were tortured into a childlike blandness with salt and oil. The scallops come with buerre blanc; the trout is fried; the duck is confit; the ribeye is, well, ribeye. There are no meaningful vegetarian options. The one vegan main course is starch and vegetables, no protein. The one salad on the menu has pork in it. I just find this style of cooking so unimaginative, I don't get the fuss.

I finally made it here! The food is fantastic, bold, original flavors. Wine list was eclectic and service was spot on. The ambiance was intimate - I didn't feel like I was in the middle of a strip mall. Three of us shared quite a few dishes - the Salmon Skin tacos we a favorite along with the Short Rib. I'll be back to try out more of the menu.

The food is phenomenal and unique. The staff was extremely friendly, outgoing and fun. I loved the atmosphere, it was relaxed and had good vibes. I can't wait to go back again :)

I've never had a bad experience here, bartenders are attentive and very friendly. We typically walk in to sit at the bar to enjoy some of their many spirits and mixed drinks. They have a decent selection of wine, but definitely try one of their signature cocktails. The bao sliders sell out quickly, but are insanely good. I recommend the hot chicken too (though I didn't see it on the menu last time) because it's a fusion of flavors and textures. A very good menu here for those who may be a bit adventurous with items like the salmon skin tacos which I hear are awesome. There's some staple items for the less adventurous like a fantastic ribeye with brussels sprouts and apples or the vegan glass noodles

Been waiting to try this restaurant since I'm a huge Top Chef and Jamie. She did not disappoint. We had the vegan scallion pancakes, salmon skin tacos, short rib, rainbow trout, and the cinnamon ice cream puff pastry. Every single dish was perfectly balanced in flavor, perfectly cooked, and unique in its own way. We're definitely coming back to taste the rest of the menu!
