in DC on a street with views towards Lafayette Square & The White House. Having somewhat good memories on a prior visit probably about 15 years ago, I made a reservation on OpenTable for dinner, but was sadly disappointed with the overall dining experience. The ambiance and decor is definitely a highlight, complete with live piano music which you'll probably never find playing at an Indian restaurant. Service (3/5) was friendly with plenty of wait staff, but dropped the ball with some customer service basics. We ordered a glass of wine, a beer, & a mango lassi for drinks, but we had to question the staff since they didn't come out for over 25 minutes. One party member ordered the mulligatawny soup (3.5/5), which came out first. A family member wanted to try some, so we asked for a small bowl for it so that it could be shared, but the waiter made a big fuss over it, and rather than be customer centric in providing a bowl, he offered to bring an additional spoon over. Very odd not to do right by the customer considering the $10 price tag on a bowl of soup. For meals, we ordered the saag, chicken makhani, & vegetarian thali. It wasn't until after the meals came out & we alerted the staff that we received the drinks we ordered. The mango lassi (2.5/5) was light in flavor without being overly sweet, but at $7, it was expensive and quite unmemorable. Despite ordering all meals with "Indian medium" spice, the food had virtually no flavor or kick to them. The chicken makhani (1.5/5) was a disappointment and quite possibly the worst preparation I've had of it in many years of dining. The gravy was flavorless and bland, and the chicken odd in texture with chewy pieces which we wound up spitting out. It came with a medium sized bowl of rice which really wasn't sufficient for the meal, and any additional rice cost $3. The saag (3/5) was probably the highlight of the meal, but still very average in comparison to other preparations. It seemed like the flavors were muted down to appease the palates of diners who can't handle any level of spice (necessary for proper flavor). The Bombay (vegetarian) thali (3.5/5) had a decent mix of items between dal makhani, a potato dish, a paneer dish, rice, & bread, but similarly lacked the spice levels to make it great. The naan (2.5/5) was small in portion & was very average tasting. While the restaurant decor & ambiance (4.5/5) was excellent, it simply didn't make up for the below average to average food. To be honest, we were all in agreement after the meal that we wouldn't return and would rather try another restaurant next time. A 2.5 star experience at best.
