Great food in a cool atmosphere
We were guests with the family on a Sunday evening. We made a reservation in advance, the restaurant was full but not fully booked. We really liked the atmosphere, the food was excellent. Lots of fresh vegetables from the farm and grilled food. The wine list also surprised me in terms of price; after our visits to various wineries in St. Helena, I was prepared for "worse". Highly recommended!

This place is so fun - great vibe and energy and the staff makes this such a great experience! The food is flavor PACKED and the potatoes are delish! Your silverware is tucked away in the table side drawer and you will enjoy your visit! We had a short wait to get seated (no Ressie in advance), but well worth it!! Instagram Keep your eyes PEELED, you gotta check this place out! 🥔🍗🍞🥖🍺👴 📸 Freshly Dug Potatoes 📸 This Month’s Wings 📸 Charter Oak Bread 📸 Pliny The Elder @The_CharterOak In the heart of the Napa Valley by Chef Christopher Kostow of the Michelin three-starred The Restaurant at Meadowood. I really liked the layout of this place. It is spacious and airy with a very high ceiling. You don’t hear the neighboring tables especially when the playlist kicks in with loud music which during our lunch was often. The menu is concise and expensive considering its simplicity. The wine list is extensive and as expected pricey, some of the best deals are astonishingly in the imported wines. The food is good but unfortunately languishes somewhere before being bought to table and is thus barely warm. This was a veritable put off. The servers leave the dessert menu and never return to take the order. We had to get up and give our order to the gaggle of servers who were waiting for who knows what. Fortunately management took notice of these lapses and corrected the bill. I found this intervention professional and courteous. And voila the reason for four stars….otherwise it would have been two.
Be the first to ReplyWhy on Michelin List?
Went for the Cheeseburger we heard about and it was great, but the rest of the family was totally disappointed in their meals. Portions were small, overpriced for that portion, wine list isn’t great, and then add the waiter who was just not caring anything about us. Never came back to check on us at all, no personality whatsoever, added an extra drink to our bill , which we caught, and final blow, he decided to add a 20% tip to our bill and there were only 5 of us, so poor service and yet got his tip!!
Be the first to ReplyNot worth it
We had high hopes for this restaurant. I’ve never met a Napa Cab I didn’t like until tonight. The cab was terrible. The service was sub par - never checked on us - minimal service. We were told it was a family style restaurant - the portions aren’t anywhere close to family style. The food wasn't bad, but small and definitely not worth the price. There are so many good places to eat in the area - go somewhere else.

We have made so many trips to Napa but had not visited Charter Oak….now that we have we will be returning. Our party of 8 had a great time and enjoyed some great food — do NOT miss the Sourdough bread….it is fabulous! We shared a variety of appetizers — the wings were great, the vegetables fantastic, the beef tartare very fresh, and the burrata was delicious! My husband and I shared the steak and it was a generous portion and perfectly prepared. You may bring your own wine if you’ve picked up something you can’t wait to try and their wine list is also very good. The atmosphere can be noisy but the very high ceilings lift most of it away. Our only question was what the heck took us so long to visit!

The Charter Oak is located in the heart of St. Helena and is a must-stop destination if you're in the Napa Valley area. We dined at The Charter Oak on our first night in Napa, and it was a phenomenal start to the trip. I recommend making reservations in advance as it can be busy and it's a pretty small restaurant overall. Reservations can be made in advance through Resy. The Charter Oak has a private parking lot with an ample amount of free parking. We entered the restaurant, just look for a large wooden door to the right after you leave the parking lot. We missed it at first and walked right past it, lol. We entered the restaurant, and were greeted warmly by the host and also were congratulated about our 1 year anniversary that was noted on the reservation. We then were seated and the server also recognized the special occasion as well and provided us two glasses of complimentary champagne to celebrate the occasion as well. The server came back a few minutes later and offered to answer any questions we had, and we placed our order. For drinks, we ordered a bottle of red blend wine (I don't remember which one, I think it was around $70 for the bottle and was really tasty. I don't think there's a "bad bottle" of wine on the menu.) For food, we started with the Salad of Little Gems ($19), and it was phenomenal, very fresh (I think it was probably from their farm just up the street). We also ordered The Cheeseburger ($25) and it included a small side of fries. The burger was also very tasty and was absolutely outstanding! We also ordered the side of Garden Broccoli ($13) and it was also all very fresh and tasty as well. We ended the meal with the Jersey Cow's Milk Soft Serve ice cream ($12) which also came from a nearby dairy farm, and it was also really good. We didn't have a single bad thing on the menu and service was great! Definitely stop in if you're in the area!
Be the first to ReplyGood and Ambience good, Server terrible
This could and should have been a 10 out of 10 but the server needs some help with service. The hosts were pleasant but gave no direction. Asked us to wait for the whole party to arrive so we sat by the huge fire pit. Gorgeous. A little later came over and said “oh go inside and grab a drink while you’re waiting.” Just felt like that should have been an option from the start. When we sat, our server, Jessica (Yessica), made the evening terrible. The food was great but she was awful. Maybe she’s new or was having a bad day, but this is not the industry for her. Abrupt and rude, super unhelpful and made our whole experience terrible. The food was good, the music and vibe was fun, but spoiled by her. I’m sorry to any other tables that have her.

Enjoyed every aspect of our meal here. The environment/bar/outside area/dining area were unique. Waiter was exceptional, and made several recommendations that all turned out better than expected.
Be the first to ReplyNew favorite Napa area restaurant!
Excellent dinner on our last evening in St. Helena. Wish we would've gone earlier in our trip so we could visit again. Lovely patio seating with attentive servers and the food was all delicious. Can't wait to return.
Be the first to ReplyBest Burger!!!
We went here based on a recommendation, and it did not disappoint! Since we didn’t have reservations, we were able to grab seats at the bar. The bartender was friendly and the restaurant is gorgeous. We heard that the burger was second to none….wow! It was probably the best burger I’ve ever had! Highly recommend this place!

Great yurt experience and menu. Unbelievable service throughout and a nice selection of food on the prix fixe menu. Well worth the $135 p/p price.
Be the first to ReplyNot a Michelin experience
This place was just ok. We came for lunch on a Monday and there was almost no one else around, we had the whole outside patio to ourselves. The patio wasn't that nice, I was a little disappointed because I saw some nice looking pics of the outside area online but they were only seating in a certain portion of the outside area which was the least beautiful portion. So 3/5 for ambience. Some of the food was good: the Raw Veggies appetizer was the best dish we had, the fermented soy dip was great and the veggies were amazing as well. The burger wasn't good. For me the burger is about the meat but this burger was covered in too much cheese and peppers. We also had pasta which was pretty good but not amazing. They have a decent selection of wines by the glass which is a plus. 3.5/5 for food. The service was a little spotty, especially considering no one was there. It seemed like they forgot about us a number of times, and there was a mistake on the bill. 3/5 for service. Overall, it was fine but I wouldn't come back here. Maybe we came on an off day but I'm surprised this place is listed in the Michelin guide.
Be the first to ReplyRustic but refined
Focused on local meats and produce from their own 3.5 acre culinary garden at the St. Helena Montessori School The Charter Oak comes from Chef Christopher Kostow of The Restaurant at Meadowood. Toqued by Eddie Lee, whose tutelage includes Daniel Humm and Lee Wolen, this is a Restaurant with an eye towards sustainability, but unlike many others that concept yields big flavors in an unpretentious family atmosphere. Dish for dish and dollar for dollar a far better experience than at the Michelin 3 star flagship before it shuttered, particularly as relates to the famous Burger and housemade Bread with carefully cultured Butter.
Be the first to ReplyNapa restaurant that’s casual and has good food
We ate here for dinner on a Thursday evening. Recommend reservations, which we did about 3 days in advance. The bread was very good paired with their whipped butter and dip, also ordered a nice salad. For entrees, we had the duck, chicken, and trout. All were prepared very well. Probably best duck I’ve had. For dessert, had the soft serve and a tart. Highly recommend the entrees we had as well as the dessert.
Be the first to ReplyThey REALLY Need to work on Menu and Service!!
I need to start by saying this is a beautiful restaurant, in what looks like a historic building. Our service was barely 'ok' as our server didn't seem to care much about providing sincerely good, helpful service... which is the type of service we're used to getting at places rated this high on social media, especially those listed in the Michelin guide. The menu is interesting and we luv a nice, fusion menu, but slightly too odd considering they have a beautiful hearth to use for cooking, it would be nice to see more on the menu cooked via that wood fire. I also feel there needs to be more on the a'la carte menu, as there were items that seemed more appealing on the chef's tasting menu, but we didn't want that much food. Their softserve dessert was outstanding! So was the bread and butter. Hanger steak was decent, definitely prepared to perfection. Pork collar was tasty and we loved the heirloom tomato salad, but opted to try it without the tofu, thankfully, because it’s just cubes of raw, basic tofu. Overall, we can say we’ve been, many other dining options we’d like to explore before returning. Another restaurant in Napa with a Michelin listing that didn't prove their worthiness.
Be the first to ReplyEncourage against tasting menu. Have a burger
We had the tasting menu. We are very experienced eaters at many fine restaurants all over the world. And believe we ended up spending over $400 for a few cocktails and a glass of wine and tasting menu. In a nutshell, I would say this restaurant is an informal place that you probably should just eat the cheese burger. The tasting menu was not inspired and very basic and nothing special. Probably one of the least inspired we have had in the last few years. First course grilled date and pear slice. Followed by a potato nibble and beet salad. And then thankfully a steak which was good. All food brought to table by what looked to be teenagers. If you decide to go, you will most likely be much happier with a hamburger. They might consider throwing up some flat screens and turning into a sports bar and just serving burgers.
Be the first to ReplyAppalling Service!
The front desk check in staff is one of the worst in the business that kind of makes the whole experience sour! People are here in Napa for some good time and expect top notch service especially at high end restaurants but unfortunately you get a really bad experience from a service perspective here that kind of puts you off on the whole experience. It is about time that the the front desk service staff are changed so that restaurant stands for the food than anything else.
Be the first to ReplyWould definitely go again!
Dinner and service was fantastic. Great flavors yet simple dishes showcasing the innovation of the chef. Loved the family style approach to dinner.
Be the first to ReplyGood food and service
Similar to Ad Hoc in Yountville, this place takes it further to combine good food and fine ingredients with sharing plates. The flavours are refine and the cooking is superb. The only drawback is I booked outdoor seating for dinner and St Helena was still quite hot at 7:00pm and only began to cool when we finished dinner at 8:30pm. Safer to book indoor seating next time.
Be the first to ReplyGood food but high priced
Staff was super friendly, fun & efficient. The interior of the restaurant is really cool, but unfortunately the outside was not open at the time of our visit (gorgeous day, we would have liked to sit outside). The menu was "interesting" but way overpriced, in my opinion. I ended up ordering the cheeseburger, which was 2 patties and I asked how it was cooked. We were told "Medium" however it came well done. Also requested no mayo and it was coated with mayo. Either the cooks aren't paying attention or the communication between the server and the cooks is lacking. Not sure I would go back.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food in a charming setting!
My wife and I have been to Charter Oak at least a dozen times so I felt it was finally time to write a review given our most recent, stellar experience with their Yurt menu!
Charter Oak is a beautiful restaurant set just off of the main street in St. Helena, near Gott's Roadside, Farmstead and St. Helena's downtown. The main dining room has a nicely-appointed patio and a large L-shaped courtyard with fire pits, and a set of Yurts used for a special lunch and dinner menu.
The service has been impeccable each time we have been there including our most recent visit where we had a terrific time with Aitor and the whole front-of-house team, as we moved through various food and beverage courses in our Yurt. There were a lot of standout dishes from the beef chuck to the cracked wheat porridge to the amazing soft serve with pecan oil and burnt vanilla for dessert. The Yurt menu does a great job of celebrating great dishes from the main menu with unique dishes designed for the Yurt experience.
It is A LOT of food, so I might hold back on your other meals that day so you can fully enjoy the Yurt menu, or expect to take plenty of leftovers home.
The prices are competitive for this quality of food and service in Napa (i.e. it is expensive compared to most other settings), but offers workarounds like the happy hour menu if you want to experience Charter Oak without a full menu.
On the broader menu (which changes frequently depending on ingredients), I would recommend the raw vegetables from the garden with fermented soy dip, the cheeseburger and the rotating wings. Charter Oak executes really well on everything related to vegetables (generally from their farm), grilled meats or house-made breads though so you cannot go wrong with a choices from any of those groups.
The cocktail and wine list is excellent and has plenty of options for every palette and price point.
Overall, we can't recommend Charter Oak more highly -- we are glad that The Restaurant at Meadowood's focus on delicious food made from local ingredients and warm, yet polished services lives on in Charter Oak!
Nice setting and very good food!
$8 Bread & butter - but very good. Half Salted Chicken was delicious! Salad very fresh and tasty. Service was friendly and attentive.
Be the first to ReplyCafeteria-quality food at inflated prices
The grilled avocado was tasteless - all it had was a puddle of oil in the middle. A little salt would have helped. The "thin pork chops" were three thin slices of pork - nothing else on the plate. The halibut was mushy, sitting in a pool of tomato puree with a few slices of underdone okra. The yellow beans in XO sauce smelled of dirty rags, nothing like the XO sauce you get in Hong Kong or Singapore. The cocktails were OK. And the bill? Over $200 for two. If you're looking for a nice ambience and the food doesn't matter, this is the place. But if you want a good meal, go somewhere else. This was one of the two worst meals I've had in the Napa area. (The other was Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen, but at least that didn't charge rip-off prices.)

We were there for happy hour. The cocktails are very good and the grilled avocado appetizer was a nice surprise. The burger was tasty but different than I recall. Are they using a different beef? We love sitting at the bar and enjoying all that it brings.
