Mixed bag from Excellent to Average
We booked a three night Easter break to include breakfast and £37 each towards dinner. We arrived early and made the most of the excellent location from where we did circular walks every day. The welcome was warm and the room was clean and well appointed but with a rather mish mash decor. A bonus was the adjacent car parking space. Dinners were excellent as were the breakfasts and we enjoyed all of the beers and wines on offer. Not cheap but not too expensive either. The ingredients were well selected and we enjoyed relaxed meals. Our biggest let downs that it took until the last morning for our dog to be offered the advertised breakfast part of the £15 a day charge to take home and also the attitude of the staff when we asked for a table to enjoy lunch and drinks. There was a sign on the entrance door saying no tables available without prior reservation however I would not expect this to be the case in a hotel . We were told we would have to sit outside. I showed my displeasure and pointed out I have stayed all over the world and always been able to eat and drink on the premises and especially when spending £400 a day/night. Eventually we were told we could sit in the Malt area and we sat there for two hours without anyone sitting on two adjacent tables. This was clearly ridiculous and I wrote to the hotel and complained and explained the refusal spoiled our day and we received no response. On the next two days the staff who were all very pleasant made an effort to allow us to have drinks and clearly stated when the next guests with reservations would arrive. This was a big improvement. I have to wonder if there was a staff shortage… This was not our first stay at a Devonshire hotel and I will ask careful questions before I book again.
Be the first to ReplyFamily Get Together
We had an excellent lunch today with some extended family. Great beer and food - I recommend the fish and chips - but more enjoyable was the service and ambience. Very warm welcome, and conscientious service from the staff, they even chased after us when we left with some toy cars my son had managed to leave behind. We were well looked after, and were given the space and time to have a lovely catch up.
Be the first to ReplyLovely stay, would recommend
Welcoming hotel, very impressed with the quality of our bedroom, well thought out and designed, good fluffy towels and robes. Ironing board /iron/hairdryer. Amazing bed and sheets, probably the best nights sleep we have ever had! Water and chatsworth biscuits a lovely touch. Staff very friendly and attentive, however clean aprons / smartening up of some staff needed for a higher end establishment. However dinner was amazing both nights we ate but would definitely recommend reservation as it does get busy. Had a fabulous time, nothing too much trouble.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding pub with rooms & dining
We spent a couple of nights at the Devonshire Arms in Beeley & have to say it was first rate. The room wasn't overly large, but was well kept with a great ensuite. What made our stay so memorable was the quality of the food. The dinners were first rate & the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Would definitely go back & we don't say that about many places!!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
We have stayed here in the past and so were looking forward to a relaxing evening and night. Unfortunately we were quite disappointed overall. We booked the dinner bed and breakfast in a suite. The room we were shown to was very tired and dated. The furniture in the bedroom and lounge was shabby and the bathroom was cramped and dated. The dinner started well with both starters being delicious. Unfortunately the main meal, we both had the rib eye steak which was an eye watering £36, was tough and mine in particular was very grisly. I only managed to eat about half of it and even that was hard going and not very tasty. When the waitress took the plates she obviously noted that I hadn’t eaten much so asked if the meal was okay at which point I said the steak was tough and grisly but unfortunately this comment fell on deaf ears. Ultimately on checking out we were charged an additional £21 as we went over the £37 per head allowance! Somewhat galling given I didn’t actually eat my main meal. The final issue was the noise in the room. We were in the main pub so unfortunately there was noise from the bar until late and then we were awoken just before 7am by staff cleaning and vacuuming the bar. Again I mentioned this when checking out to be told, oh that’s a shame. Overall the staff seem quite young and it’s clear there is a lack of focus on customer service. Given the price it should be much better! We won’t be back
Be the first to ReplyComfortable, cosy stay in this beautiful pub.
We had a lovely deluxe double room in the cottage adjacent to the pub. The room was clean and spacious, with a lovely, comfortable big bed. Little touches in the room were nice, like the small fridge and the biscuits. Evening meal in the pub/ restaurant was very good, as was breakfast. Service throughout was excellent, from when we checked in and while eating.
Be the first to ReplyGreat atmosphere and food but avoid the dinner, B&B package
Beautiful location, lovely restaurant, friendly staff. But: if you are booking on the dinner bed and breakfast tariff, be sure that you'll eat £37 of food at dinner. We're quite heathy eaters so tend not to have a starter and/or a pudding. Plus the food prices (with the exception of the steaks) are very reasonable so it was impossible to use up our dinner allowance. This made the dinner poor value. One other piece of feedback is that this is a restaurant and not a pub. There are very few seats available to just sit and enjoy a post dinner drink. This was a shame. All that said, the food was excellent. My ham, egg and chips among the best I've had. My wife's fish special was also delicious. So I would say this is a dinner destination. If you're looking for a comfortable hotel with decent size rooms (and beds) in the Peak District, then I am sure there are better options open.
Be the first to ReplySlightly Disappointed!!
I used to live in the local area before moving away so I suggested to my partner, after a drive through the peak district, we would call in for a late lunch. We ate in the pub area, which is a lovely cosy space. We both chose from the pub classic menu. The prices are higher than average but the quality was good and obviously fresh ingredients. Our disappointment came with dessert. We ordered cheesecake (our favorite). instead of a large slice on the plate there was just 3 teaspoon sized dollops of cheesecake mix. This cost £9.50. This left a pretentious and incredibly overpriced taste in our mouths. It spoiled an otherwise good experience.
Be the first to ReplySo much to delight you and enjoy
So nearly 5 stars for everything. I'll address the niggle shortly but do stay here. The welcome, service and attention is outstanding from the youngest to the mature. We stayed here last year and returned to enjoy the hotel and the "Behind the Scenes" visit to Chatsworth (also really excellent) I'll resist naming our room but the decor, fittings and fixtures are real class. A room to relax as well as sleep. Also sockets galore for phone chargers etc. Parking is free and spaces always available even if fully booked. Our evening meal was superb and the Devonshire bubbles well worth the extra pound over Prosecco. Relaxed and efficient service without a time table needing to be vacated. Quality cooking that could be savoured leisurely. And the niggle. Not that no dark ale was available but the absence of a gluten cereal and only streaky not back bacon being available both days did affect each of us for different reasons. The cooked breakfast disappointed on this occasion but everyone is entitled to a poor day. So go,go,go and we will return here very happily. Thank you. The many 'snug' areas in the pub
Be the first to ReplyRecommended - wonderful staff !
The staff here are wonderful. Extremely friendly and helpful. For example our friends had a problem with charging their electric car and staff went to great lengths to help, even after we accidentally broke a cover on the cover to the electric socket ! The food is excellent and the fires in the bar very welcoming. The location is excellent too, very handy for walking, and with a lovely little brook just outside.
Be the first to ReplyFab twixmas treat
We had a lovely overnight stay between Christmas and new year. Despite the deluge! It was too wet to really explore the stunning countryside. But the warm log fire and a few beers were a very welcome alternative. Our room was lovely if compact with fresh milk and Chatsworth estate biscuits. It’s popular so even if you’re a resident book for dinner. We wanted something not festive and the food didn’t disappoint. Trout starter was fresh and zingy. Loved the mushroom main course and the chocolate cremeaux was historic. Like proper master chef cooking and beautifully presented. Mind you prices did reflect this. However service was maybe a little underwhelming. Lovely pleasant staff. But all very young with maybe not a lot of experience. There were a couple of drink mishaps and the dishes weren’t really explained to us. There were bells and whistles on the plate but we had to find our own way around. But it was still fab and I’d deffo go back Breakfast equally satisfying with plenty of fresh local produce.
Be the first to ReplyA total shambles
We've eaten here 10+ times but never again, which is a shame. The Chatsworth Kitchen and the farmshop cafe can get it right, but they've lost the plot here. I won't waste my time elaborating, as the title of my review says it all.
Be the first to ReplyWarm welcome in Dog Friendly Hotel
We booked a couple of nights here as we wanted a dog friendly hotel between Somerset and Northumberland and were warmly welcomed. The staff were excellent and didnt seem to mind that our dog was usually wet and muddy. The food was good and portions very generous. Our room was small but warm and comfortable with coffee and tea making kit [including fresh milk in the fridge]plus welcome pack for dog.The surrounding countryside is glorious and one can walk to Chatsworth over the fields.
Be the first to ReplySnowy peaks
Our lovely room was situated opposite the pub , and the sound of the stream out side, coupled with the most comfortable bed, meant we slept very peacefully. We ate in the restaurant on two occasions and the food was delicious, but the breakfast even better. No watery mushrooms of half baked tomatoes here, quality ingredients and perfectly cooked. The Staff in the main were very helpful and friendly. Very comfortable base, from which to explore the beautiful Peak District .
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful location; poor service and quality
We found the location and our rooms to be very lovely. Staff overall were very pleasant, especially the bar staff in the evening; however, the wait staff (and possibly kitchen staff) were lacking in training and bordering on unprofessional. The evening meal food varied widely within our group, from delicious fish and chips, to barely edible burgers (meat and vegetarian) that were like hockey pucks; from deliciously delicate pork cheek starter to arancini that would make any Italian shudder. The breakfasts were a disaster. Eggs benedict were almost hard boiled, and quite cold. When feedback was given to the waitress, she brought out a second plate of eggs benedict that were only marginally better than the first. The full English breakfasts had baked beans that seemed to have gone straight from the tin to the plate, completely bypassing any warming in a pan. On the second morning, we dined as part of a larger group. We waited well over an hour after placing our order for our food. No staff came out to give us an update or apologize for the delay. I'm not sure what could have caused the delay - each full English breakfast only had one sausage, one piece of black pudding, one egg, two small rashers of bacon, so the combined ingredients could have been cooked at the same time in two or three frying pans and kept warm enough to be served hot to all members of our party at the same time. The other diners in the restaurant (maybe three other parties, mostly couples) had already eaten by the time we were served. Had the kitchen staff called in sick? Why didn't the wait staff provide an explanation? Three of our party ordered French toast that was immediately sent back to the kitchen as it was burnt. The hotel knew the exact numbers to expect at breakfast each day as we were required to book our time slot in advance. It's mind-blowing just how terrible it was. Reading the reviews on TripAdvisor, the quality of food and service seems to be an issue at this hotel. Guests choosing this hotel do so because they expect the high quality associated with the Chatsworth brand, and pay a premium for that quality. I do not feel I received quality service or goods that I paid for, beyond the picturesque location. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, or choose to stay there again.
Be the first to ReplyPoor service, food and value for money
The review by Debbie G from Nottingham posted March 2023 couldn’t be further from the experience myself and 13 members of my family experienced at this establishment . This establishment presents itself as a high end luxury experience and charges the prices that suggest this is what you will get. I can honestly say in my opinion this is not what you will get. In the interest of balance I can say that the location is lovely and the rooms were generally nice , although one of the guests in our party did find soiled underwear from a previous guest on checking into their room. Not a pleasant surprise! We stayed for two nights bed, breakfast and dinner and spent a considerable amount of money. The service on check in was pleasant and the staff who were serving us at dinner and in the bar were quite friendly but not attentive and lacked training in my view. At no point during our meals did anyone ask if everything was ok with the food or if we needed anything else. The service was slow and generally poor to average. The food offering at dinner and breakfast for both days was very mixed and overall poor. The quantities were exceptionally mean and quality varied widely. It was very inconsistent. At breakfast the first morning two of our party ordered Eggs Benedict but the eggs were hard and the food was stone cold. Both were sent back and one of our party was put off reordering but one did. The second one that came out was slightly better but the eggs were still over done and it was luke warm. The fruit salad came in the size of a dish no bigger than an egg cup which was a bit of a joke. The breakfast servers were disinterested and came across as surly both mornings . The waitress did not offer juice or communicate anything about the menu and just expected us to ask. She really could not be too bothered and we felt like we were an inconvenience. The second morning it was clear the kitchen and staff could not cope. We waited over an hour for our orders and when asked where the food was the response , without checking, was “well you are a big group” and “it was being plated up “. It didn’t come for at least another 20 minutes. When it arrived three of our party ordered French toast with bacon and maple syrup. All three were returned - they were burnt, cold and thrown onto the plate. It was certainly nothing like French toast. All three didn’t not reorder. At no point did the manager come out to see us or apologise. The quantity of food for the same dishes varied from the Friday to the Saturday for the same price. The pastries ordered on the Saturday morning were a different quantity to the Sunday morning. The Arancini starter on the Friday night consisted of three very bland balls of rice, compared to the Saturday nights offering where 2 guests were given two balls. The balls were the same size on both nights but were the same price. Two guests on the second night had ordered plant burgers and both arrived burnt and were very poor quality. One guest had sourdough that was very hard and stale. The mushroom tagliatelle was very dry and the dumplings on the very small portions of stew for three guests were as hard as bullets on the outside and could not be eaten. The stew itself was very nice all be it very small, along with most of the rest of the portions. This left us feeling exceptionally underwhelmed with the whole experience. On the positive side two of the guests had fish and chips which were very nice. The staff were lacking training in some very basic customer service skills for such an establishment. At no point throughout the stay did anyone ask us if everything was ok and when I asked to have our party of 14 moved from the small malt vault ( which allegedly fits 14) to the larger brasserie that would more comfortably fit 14, I felt like an inconvenience. The staff member looked exacerbated and said she would review it to see if it was possible, but then didn’t tell me if she had been able to accommodate it until I asked her again about an hour later if she had been able to move us, which she then confirmed. The malt vault is not pictured on the web site but is pitched as a lovely private dining experience. It is not , the room is very average and small. The whole experience was tainted by the poor customer service and food. This was supposed to be a special family occasion but all 14 guests were disappointed in some way. Many were too polite to say until after for fear of ruining the celebrations. I can only assume that the positive reviews on here are either from different sets of staff or management, as I fail to understand how they could differ so much to our experience. I have looked at the reviews going back over the past year and the same threads seem to persistently recur which is very sad and find it surprising that the responses don’t seem to have made any difference , despite the apologies and promises to feed back to those concerned. I could sadly not recommend to anyone that they should stay here.
Be the first to ReplyA memorable birthday trip - Feb 2023
We recently booked a night away at The Devonshire to celebrate my birthday - 28.02.23. Having booked and then looked at some of the less positive Trip Advisor reviews we were a little apprehensive. But we prefer to judge a place ourselves and not be reliant on reviews that are often biased or unfair. Thank goodness we were not put off. From the minute we walked through the doors we were greeted by amazing, friendly, attentive staff. We had booked the DBB package but had struggled to find somewhere for lunch so dropped in without a booking. The bar area was full (always a good sign on a Tuesday/mid-week) but a lovely lady greeted us and offered to set us up a table in the brassiere. She was attentive but not fussy and ensured we were well looked after. The food was delicious and well presented (both chose the fish finger sandwich) and despite the many reviews complaining about portion size, neither of us could finish it (and we both have good appetites) We were then shown to our room located above the bar and it was cosy, really clean and lots of lovely extras - biscuits (fresh milk/bottled water in the fridge), nespresso machine with plenty of coffee pods and a selection of teas. Fresh milk is always a bonus as opposed to those disgusting little pods you normally get on a night away!! Whilst the bathroom did not have a tub it was well equipped with a large walk-in shower, soft white fluffy towels and beautiful Noble Iris toiletries. There is also an eco conscious effort to not use the little throw-away plastic containers. We then spent an afternoon relaxing in the bar area and although the main lunchtime rush had left, there was a nice atmosphere of diners and drinkers (the added bonus of being dog friendly so plenty of four-legged friends to fuss) Dinner was perfect. We requested a table near the log burner and this was not an issue (although I would suggest booking this normally in advance as it is a popular spot). We had a lovely corner table and enjoyed an evening of great food, great service and a great selection of wines. Special thanks goes to Becky who went out of her way to look after us (and all the customers). She was chatty, friendly and had a permanent smile despite being really busy and towards the end of a long day. She never stopped running around looking after everyone. Breakfast was another delight next morning - great selection, table service, cooked exactly as requested and even provided me with Marmite for my toast :-) Sadly we didn’t get the names of the staff who looked after us at breakfast but everyone deserved a mention. I think it’s really important to give a balanced view of any establishment. It’s so easy to be influenced by keyboard warriors and we could have been put off but we think the team deserve a 10/10 for top customer service. We indulged in 3 meals at different times and the portion sizes were excellent. The room above the bar was not noisy and we slept really well. We would definitely return and the staff made my birthday stay a memorable one. Thank you xx

For all the staff that worked the evening of Monday 27th February, a huge thank you! The food was fabulous and the staff were amazing! They kept my partners proposal top secret and even gave us a card once he had proposed ❤️ The room for the night was beautiful I couldn't have wished for a better evening. Thank you, team devonshire We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyQuality over quantity.
The best way I can sum this place up is quality over quantity. The food is excellent but you don't get a lot of it. Expensive but outstanding quality. Your taste buds will be in for a treat but you may leave still hungry as I did (I'm 73kg so not a big guy with a huge appetite either). So let's talk about our experience, very welcoming. The location and atmosphere is excellent. The service is very polite although I suspect quite new in regards to they don't seem experienced and quite sure what the meals contain etc. My wife ordered and her veg. which didn't arrive. But was brought after. The food and drinks aren't cheap. An 8oz steak will set you back £30 and a pint is £5. This place could easily be a 5 star if the portion sizes were a little more. We will revisit. Cannot fault the quality of the food.
Be the first to ReplySunday Lunch
We visited the Devonshire Arms today after a lovely afternoon walk around Chatsworth. The pub was cosy, and dog friendly, which was good, as we had a dog with us. Myself and my sister in law ordered a roast beef dinner, with, seasonal veg and Yorkshire pudding. We ordered a child's Roast pork dinner too. The adults roast dinner was £18, the children's was half the price. The roast beef dinner consisted of one slice of roast beef, with most of the fat still on, that we cut off and gave to the dog. One well done Yorkshire pudding, one roast parsnip, two small pieces of carrot, two small roast potatoes, a small piece of broccoli, a smearing of either mashed swede, or sweet potato, I wasn't sure, and a small serving of red cabbage. The child's dinner, apart from having pork, and there being no red cabbage, was exactly the same. So basically we paid for two adult meals and one child's, but pretty much we were all served the same amount of food. Not very impressed, was still hungry when we came away. Won't be visiting again.
Be the first to ReplyGreat staff and a lovely stay
We had a stay with dinner and breakfast, my main reason to write a review is the amazing staff. The young man that served us yesterday went above and beyond and the food and wine surpassed expectation.
Be the first to ReplySunday roast
I’ve been coming here for a while, the food is really good but I recently had their roast beef dinner. They’d ran out of pomme purée, they did offer to give more roast potatoes, i had 4 on my plate so I’d have probably have had 2 - also mashed potato shouldn’t be a side. Not many vegetables, didn’t ask if we wanted any horseradish and no cauliflower cheese option. My biggest annoyance was the beef, or lack of it. It was really good beef but they only served one piece. When you’re paying £17 for a roast dinner, you expect more than one slice. Normally on a roast dinner, you get at least 2 pieces, usually 3 - one is absolutely ridiculous. It’s clearly all about the profit.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a joke
I entered the pub at 8.30 last night for something to eat. The place was empty. The bar staff told me they were fully booked. There must have been 10 empty tables !! I asked if I could eat outside, No Just unbelievable Do you want my custom or not ? Will not be coming back I’ll go to a proper pub
Be the first to ReplyMixed experience but overall positive
The hotel is in a great location for walking to Chatsworth House and enjoying the grounds. Dinner was good and the room we had excellent with a pleasant sitting out area. The only let down was a serious glitch in breakfast (had to wait for over an hour) and poor customer service in addressing the problem. Some staff training is needed but more importantly some visible input from senior management. Having said this I'd not let this one-off put you off visiting. We had a very pleasant time.
Be the first to ReplyWe were spoilt rotten by a wonderful team at The Devonshire Arms.
This is a lovely place to stay. Our room was extremely comfortable and quiet. The food was really good using the best ingredients and preparing them with skill. It was a shame that some dishes sold out early, especially when the menu isn"t extensive, however this didn't lessen our enjoyment overall. The staff are wonderful. Every member of the team is friendly, helpful and professional. Our dog loved all the attention and the constant supply of biscuits! We would love to return.
