The Felin Fach Griffin Brecon Reviews from The Last Year
Superb hotel, restaurant and pub
We found it in a number of carefully-compiled selections, so our expectations were already pretty high but they managed to exceed them. The hotel is comfortable, clean and quiet. It provides you with all the basic amenities you need when you are back from a day of hiking in a warm, welcoming and familiar environment. There is a nice outdoor area or a beautiful lounge inside to have your tea or beer. They have a restaurant on-site which is highly recommended, and half-board accommodation is available. It is often described as a gastro-pub, but as far as I am concerned a number of their Michelin-starred "competitors" should drop by here and take notes. They offer variety and quality, both in the locally-sourced ingredients and in the way the dishes are made and presented. The service is efficient and kind. This place is strategically-located to access some of the activities within Brecon Beacons. With an easy drive you can reach Pont ar Daf, the National Trust parking for the Pen-Y-Fan hiking (you can start the hike there and close a loop in another parking nearby). Always with an easy drive you can reach the Black Mountains circuit, which is a 50-mile tour through nice villages, Norman ruins and ancient woods.
Good food; nice setting
We recently stopped by the Felin Fach Griffin for lunch on our way to the Brecon Beacons. This was a wonderfully cosy Welsh pub (with rooms) - we were quickly welcomed upon arrival and shown to our table. Service was warm and professional. The food was several notches above what would be on offer even at a good gastopub - and coupled with the setting made for a thoroughly enjoyable late lunch. We will definitely return!
Underwhelmed
It's a few years since we visited The Felin Fach Griffin and we were disappointed with our lunch. Staff were efficient and courses delivered promptly. The starter was a crab rarebit which lacked flavor. The fish and chips were a real let down. We expected small portions so were not surprised at the thin narrow battered piece of fish, but it was completley tastless. The batter very bland. The chips were ok. The minuscule serving of mushy peas tasted great. Desert was bread and butter pudding . Very simple and very flavourless. Would have expected it to be elevated in some way but it was very dull. Was expecting it to be rich and creamy. Did not feel like a gastro meal and frankly our local fish and chip shop knocks spots off them. We won't return as for the price could have found somewhere more tasty. £40 per head with fizzy water. 12.5% service charge added.
Really pretty perfect -both room and dinner
Pretty perfect really. Huge room with two bathrooms and easily accommodated two extra beds for the kids. Dinner and breakfast included in the price meant it was pretty cheap too. The food at both dinner and breakfast was as good as I've had in a pub. Wine list done with love with plenty of classics and quirky bottles. Great pin of cask ale in the bar. Nice staff - everything pretty effortless. And let me charge my car for free too. Will go back
Average
Average food. I don’t think that it is worth the extra money you have to pay. The service was slow. Waited ages for desert and cancelled in the end as needed to catch a bus and we had been there for two hours
Wonderful food and great accommodation.
We stayed for 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast. We also took our Cocker Spaniel with us and he was made to feel very welcome in our room and the restaurant. The room was very comfy and even had covers on the seat for our dog, it was very warm but we were staying on the hottest weekend of the year. It was a great base for exploring and walking in the Brecon Beacons. The highlight however was the food, it was some of the best food we have ever tasted and the side dishes fri the kitchen garden were wonderful, my wife is still talking about the tomato salad we shared with our Hake and Louise’s Cauliflower based vegetarian main. The other evening we had the steak and the cod loin again perfect. The beer and wine were also really good and a great selection. We will definitely be back.
A worthwhile stopover for Brecon National Park.
On the strength of a Daily Telegraph review of The Griffin we booked back in March for a stay on their special deal for September. Two nights in a comfortable room with three course dinner each night. We were not disappointed. They have an excellent creative chef with daily tweaks to the menu on offer. We couldn't fault the food on either night, although on the second night the portions defeated us leaving no room to test the sweets. Beds comfortable but the hotel is on a main road, and even with a room at the back it is noisy. The rooms are well equipped and most comfortable. The staff were most welcoming and made every effort to please. The wine list is well marked up but there are some cheaper options to try. One tip - check your bills. We were overcharged £140 - partly picked up by me before paying but the other amount was picked up very quickly when the person responsible for accounts checked in later in the morning. An email of apology was waiting on our return that lunchtime. All sorted the same day - but we finished up with items from other guests charged to our bill. It was hard on the person trying to serve breakfasts and deal with accounts - perhaps someone needs to be on duty a little earlier to deal with guest accounts so this doesn't happen again. This small matter won't prevent us from visiting the Griffin again - if just for a wonderful well presented and tasty evening meal.
Exceptional hotel- what a lucky find.
I highly recommend this hotel and restaurant. The bedrooms are lovely with small attention to detail such as ground coffee and a cafetière in the room. The bed was so comfortable. The food was absolutely delicious and lots of options for a picky eater and coeliac. Friendly and approachable staff who went above and beyond to look for my wife’s lost phone (we found it). Dog friendly too and again attention to detail with poo bags and feed bowls in the hallway.
A Must Visit!
This was recommended by Debbie of The Lodge in Garthbrengy (AirBnB home) and lived up to all expectations! The welcome was warm and friendly, the atmosphere was lovely and the decor was beautiful. Then the main reason for our visit, the food, was simply delicious and plentiful. The available choice was superb and both my wife’s & my starters and main courses were beautiful presented with fresh Al dente vegetables and perfectly cooked. The price was surprisingly reasonable given that they ticked all the boxes for a gourmet meal out. Will definitely return if we’re back in the area.
A pleasant surprise!
This was quite a find! We had no expectations but were pleasantly surprised to discover a really excellent place to eat here. A new chef has recently started apparently and her efforts are to be enjoyed. The crab starter with a ginger dressing was outstanding. Everything else we had (all fish on this occasion - cod and hake for main courses) were delightful. It is a little on the pricey side but worth it nonetheless. Would definitely recommend.

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
