Fresh local food - incredible flavor and value.
This is a somewhat hidden gem. The food is local, fresh and incredible. Hubby had the fried chicken sandwich and a "small" side salad. The sale was huge. Fresh buttercrunch lettuce, lots of cokes, flavorful tomatoes. Excellent housemate dressing. My hunny said the chicken sandwich was the best he ever had. Homemade pickles great. I had the shrimp and grits. Incredibly flavorful dish - dare I say the best I've ever had? Grits were super creamy and flavorful and now I have to find a bag to take home.
Be the first to ReplyThe Glass Onion is a taste of Charleston
We landed in Charleston in the rain after a long exhausting day and our stomachs were grumbling with hunger. Luckily, we drove directly to The Glass Onion, about 20 minutes or so from the airport, for our introduction to the Lowcountry. While there are many great restaurants serving popular Lowcountry fare, this one hit the spot. The restaurant is located on a busy street near a Whole Foods. It’s not very scenic, but the interior is nice and furthermore, the food is the real deal. The servers were very friendly and attentive. I enjoyed the music playlist which added to the good vibe. We started off with a couple local beers from Coast Brewing and Tradesman Brewing which were pretty tasty. Maybe our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, but all the servings were very generous. I had the shrimp dip which came with homemade potato chips, pickled okra & cucumber slices on the side. My wife ordered the fried green tomatoes. This was the delicious beginning of our feast. Then my trout arrived, along with my wife’s fried pork chop. I also ordered a side of broccoli salad. It all was tastefully prepared and satisfying. We ended up taking a couple leftovers with us and the idea of coming back again before we fly out of Charleston.
Be the first to ReplyGreat southern options
Pork chop was lightly breaded with a nice crunch, and the chop was moist. I was surprised to see that my ‘peas’, were not the green ones I expected, but black eyed peas, which were wonderfully prepared. Since stumbling upon this restaurant about a dozen years ago (maybe more?) it’s been a must stop, when we are visiting Charleston, and it’s never disappointed

A very popular place with longish waits and small parking area. It has homie atmosphere, almost like semi-private cafeteria with wooden tables. It seems that the place is not run for profit, as they can double capacity and increase prices (they do charge a 3% 'cost recovery fee' for ALL transactions) Food is quality good ol' Southern cooking. We especially liked the shrimp plate and the trout. And the Choc. Peanut Butter Pie is otherworldly!

i can recommend the shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, and beet salad from personal experience. the simple combination of the beets, goat cheese, and pecans made it the standout dish for me, but beets are one of my favorite vegetables. this is not to take away from the other two menu items i ordered at all. they excelled in their own way. the shrimp and grits exceeded expectations of this area. the mint julep mocktail is very refreshing, as well as the ginger beer at the end of your dinner. the menu that changes daily invites you to not get too comfortable, and be adventurous. lastly, the service can't be beat here. i absentmindedly left some very costly purchases from monster music and movies in the seat next to me, and they came running after me on the way out, to make sure i didn't leave without them. that was much appreciated. i can't wait to get back to charleston and try more of what you have to offer.

Be the first to ReplySouthern Farm to Table Goodness on Savannah Highway!
Husband and I here for early dinner. This is like eating at your Southern Granny's, and she is one "slap your Momma" tasty cook! The Brussel sprouts were so good, the cornbread was grand! My husband's shrimp and grits was wonderful! I had the shrimp Po Boy, and it was huge! It has a farm to table fancy feel, and was far more reasonable than one would think. This would be a great first date place, and I think you could take a family to eat here, for a special occasion. I would bet this fills up fast on the weekends. We were there on a weeknight early, and it was fairly full when we left at 6PM. This is the kind of meal worth taking the time to make the drive to!

Excellent Dining Option in Charleston! We had the fried green tomatoes app and it was delish. The shrimp and grits was so good. I took some back to the hotel for lunch the next day. Friendly staff and excellent food in a mom and pop type restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyOut of the Way But Worth It - Casual Southern Cooking!
This is a very casual restaurant that is away from the historic district. It looks and feels like a diner and the food was fabulous. We took an uber and while traveling thought what were we getting ourselves into but were very happily surprised. The service was perfect if not too fast!! The food was traditional southern SC food but with added flavors that were perfect. The shrimp and gits had sausage and creole tomato's making it one of my favorite dishes in the South! We had all course and loved all selections. On top of that the food is relatively inexpensive so our meal was much less than the fancy restaurants in the historic district. Well worth the drive!
Be the first to ReplyA great Break From Upscale Restaurants in Charleston
I first saw The Glass Onion on Diners, Drive In's and Dives and was excited to try it out. It is a nice break from the upscale restaurants in Historic Charleston. I have been here twice. Once I got the catfish with red beans and rice and collard greens. It really hit the spot. the second time, I got the porkchop with mashed potatoes and collard greens. The pork chop was a tad bit chewy and that , in addition to the extremely limited parking, is the reason I did not give it 5 stars. I would recommend coming here. I had pretty good luck popping in at 3:00 on a Monday in order to avoid the crowds
Be the first to ReplyGood service, classic low country cuisine
We were in the area and stopped in for diner. No reservations so it pays to get there early because it is very popular. Had the catfish and chicken gnocchis for dinner. Both recipes were well balanced and classic low country. Recommend if you are looking for this type of cuisine.

Been taking the scenic routes rather than 95 and looked forward to ending day with supper at the Glass Onion. Good choice.
Enjoyed a local brew, an excellent fried moist pork chop, collards and corn muffin. Attentive friendly service. Reasonable prices.
Lots of folks even though it was Monday night.
Road side lunch spot!
We had this place circled on our places to visit. I had done some pre travel research and this place was recommended on several sites. It’s a short drive from Middleton Plantation. I opted for the fried catfish, fries, and coleslaw. The fresh cut fries are served in abundance! The coleslaw was good, not great. However, the healthy sized piece of catfish more than made up for it. Fried perfectly and extremely tender and flaky. Best I have had in some time. Definitely would return to try other items on the menu.

Excellent lunch. We drove into the parking lot to turnaround and go to Wholefoods. We decided to try it out. What a great dedisikn that was. I had the chicken sandwich with macaroni salad. My wife had the shrimp and grits. Both were excellent. The pickle that came on the side with my sandwich was also really good. We cleaned the plate.

Absolutely wonderful. Friendly excellent service. Fabulous food. We started with fried oysters and fried brussel sprouts. Wonderful. My husband had the cat fish. I had the pork belly. Both excellent.
Be the first to ReplyVery good southern food
This place is a gem. Lots of people and very little parking spaces so avoid busy hours. We ordered the trout, fried green tomatoes and gumbo during our first visit. They were so good and we went back the next day. We ordered a catfish and a fried chicken sandwich with a large garden salad.
See pictures.
All excellent.
Great food, beware of hidden prices
Just visiting the area and a barista suggested this place. We checked it out online first to see the menu and the simple daily menu appealed to us. I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken breast sandwich with fries. My husband ordered a cup of gumbo and shrimp & grits with garlic toast.
My only negative here is that when we ordered, the waitress asked me what I wanted for my side with the sandwich, she named a few things and I said fries. My husband, when asked if he wanted cornbread or garlic toast, he said garlic toast. When we got our bill, we were charged extra for those items. So it was an extra $6 we probably wouldn’t have ordered. Then there was a card fee of 3%, which had we known, we would have used cash.
Our Favorite Restaurant in Charleston
My favorite restaurant in Charleston. Great ingredients and true southern cooking. Love the fried catfish and collard greens. Most everything is great.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed all around
We went for a very early supper based on all the good reviews. It was our first and last visit. They have a somewhat limited menu that specializes in southern food like red rice and pork belly. which wasn't quite a good fit for us. So we both ordered the deep fried catfish, fries and cole slaw. Even though the dinner hour hadn't even started, they were out of cole slaw. The fries were tough and over-cooked to the point of being crystalized. The single piece of catfish was nice. Service was SLOW even though there were few people there that early. It was very hard to get our waitress's attention. She had little interest in her customers. The wifi password that they gave us never worked, and the waitress could care less. I finally concluded that the glass of water was the best thing that we ordered.
