Be the first to ReplyDisappointing food
My family and I had a booking at The Goring hotel Dinning room at 20:00 on Saturday. It was my husband’s 50th Birthday and despite we had an amazing time, food was extremely disappointing. Staff: we were greeted with a smile at the entrance by very pleasant staff. We decided visit a bar for drinks before having dinner and I must say the staff were best to none. Very polite, pleasant and I can’t thank them enough for a great service. The Dinning Room: staff at the entrance of the restaurant were really lovely. The ambiance of the dinning room is breath taking and felt intimate with only few tables. The waiting staff were amazing and very attentive. Food: the food was very disappointing at least to say and did not reflect the restaurant good name and definitely not worth of Michelin star. I had a risotto starter which was very underwhelming and stodgy. For the main meal I had a chicken which was very tough with rubbery skin and the gravy was so salty that I could not eat more than quarter of it. Plate was cold, chicken was warm and gravy was less than warm. The kale side dish was literally just few leaves of kale thrown in the small bowl with no dressing or effort what’s on ever. I don’t remember ever experiencing anything like it, not even in the pub. Desert: I had Rum baba which was freezing cold with chopped fruit and cream which was just thrown on the plate with no effort. It was worst desert I have ever had and I was only able to eat 2 spoons of it. I was slightly disappointed that staff saw that we didn’t finish our dishes but didn’t ask for any feedback. I felt as it was end of the night they just wanted us to leave. We ordered four coffees and we have to remind waiter as we were waiting for it for some time and unfortunately when we received them, they were cold. At the end they brought some tiny dry biscuit with peace of chocolate and candle to say happy birthday. It was so bad that I was embarrassed and if I would’ve know I would’ve asked them not to bring it. The only person who asked us for feedback was fellow at the cloakroom desk. Even though we enjoyed our company and had a great time we felt disappointed about the food. This was not our first time at the Goring but after this experience I will think twice if I will come back.
Be the first to ReplyLovely ambience for Afternoon Tea, disappointing food
I debated between a 3 and 4 star here, but decided that the 3 star was needed to get the management attention. I brought my young adult daughter here so she could experience her first true English afternoon tea. At over £70 pp (after paying for the water and tip), it should be an experience. The hotel is lovely, the staff members were polite and attentive, and the tea was served on fine china. All good, so far. My problem was with the quality of the food. The sandwiches were served on the typical English sliced bread (sorry, just does not compare to fresh continental bread) and were mainly not very tasty or special (e.g. the cucumber sandwiches could have used more salt and a sprinkle of white balsamic vinegar to be more flavorful). You could ask for more - we were not even tempted to finish what we were given. The scones were standard, frankly no better than what I bought at M &S. The sweets on the top tray were fine, but again nothing to be really proud of. When you get so much right, it is a shame to underwhelm your guests with the food - especially at the prices you charge. Please review the quality of the food you offer to make the experience at the Goring truly memorable.
Be the first to ReplyNot the experience we had hoped
We brought a family member here for lunch to celebrate their 70th - we started in the beautiful bar where the service and atmosphere was fantastic. However, we then moved into the empty dining room (12.30 booking and 4 tables), we ordered some wine and then our food. Disappointed not to be advised that our mains would not be accompanied by any vegetables so we had to order these once the food had already arrived, by the time they came we had almost finished. The crumbs from our bread were left scattered across our table and not cleared but I noticed other tables were being cleared. For a Michelin starred restaurant, I was left feeling underwhelmed by the food and disappointed with the service. Glad I went but there are so many other michelin starred restaurants out that which I will be choosing over a return to the Goring.
Be the first to ReplyAfternoon tea
We came as a group of 8 for afternoon tea. The hotel was beautiful. The food was nice and there was a vast array of teas to choose from. The staff were extremely busy and we had to ask for things several times, such as butter which took around 20-30 minutes to arrive. The staff were friendly enough but not overly which you would actually expect for where you were and what you were paying. It was a little disappointing that there wasn’t a different children’s menu for the sandwiches. It was a lovely touch that the children were offered non alcoholic champagne. The sweets on the stands are to share between 2 people and you can ask for more of any food which is great. Our plate had to share between 3 and no extra was put on which meant we HAD to ask for more to get what we actually should have and I don’t think that’s good for £90 per head! Overall we did have a lovely experience and enjoyed our celebration but little things, for the price, could have been much improved on. A big mention to the reservation team via email who provided an exceptional service.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful but unwelcoming
Our conclusion is that the beautiful Goring Dining Room is uninterested in guests who are not staying in the hotel. This is a shame. We have stayed there, and we have often dined there, but in this first post-Covid visit, we were not welcome, and almost left before our first pre-dinner drink arrived. The Dining Room is beautiful, classical, and classy, the staff are attentive and competent, the menu and wine list are both impressive, the food is outstanding. The prices are high, everything is chargeable, and it’s right to expect to feel a little special. However, nobody welcomed us to the property, we were not once asked by anyone other than the waiters and the bar staff if everything was okay; the suits were much too busy bustling round and fussing over others whom we assume were hotel guests. Finally, only the very polite young lady in the bar asked us if we had had a nice evening as she took our payment. So, if The Goring can’t be bothered with us, sadly we can’t be bothered to go back again. Sad and careless.
Be the first to ReplySadly, an underwhelming afternoon tea experience
Now do not misunderstand this review, my first visit to The Goring showcased moments of excellence and customer service. Sadly though our first time afternoon tea experience was a great disappointment. For weeks we had been looking forward for day away from the Shires and enjoy the best of London Town. We arrived at about 2.30 for our 3.00 reservation and most politely taken through to the welcoming lounge. Asked to sit....and so we did...and wait. After about 15 minutes I went to the bar to order drinks...it was waiter service and yes finally our order was taken. We could see empty tables...so at 3.10 i respectfully asked if our table was ready....me thinks we were forgotten as immediately taken to a table, unfortunately sited by the service desk (oh well). First impression not of the beautifully ornate China but on how chilly it felt. My guest kept her coat on throughout the service. It soon became apparent that the draught was coming from the door leading to the gardens, This had been left slightly ajar...it became apparent this door was being used for garden cigarette breaks, each time letting in the finest that the Artic can offer. Fine in Summer, but...now where was I, oh yes, a waitress came to our table at about 3.25, pleasant but certainly not 5 star. As we waited, it was easy to observe that certain tables were receiving more than attentive service, perhaps and unintentionally the adage that compensation follows behaviour is true. It was not busy so able to reflect. Was it the end of shift and staff tired....who knows, but we left the conservatory slightly deflated. Afternoon tea should be an experience, feeling welcomed and an escape from those everyday chores. However, and It is only fair to add, the waitress offered and we greatly accepted a goody bag assortment. Thank you. Before leaving the hotel for the misty murk outside, we took a peek at the restaurant. We were greeted by a most charming and delightful member of staff. She warmly explained items on the menu, and amusingly why so many cuddly sheep. Perfect, that was the Gorjng I wanted to enjoy. Would I return after the Christmas lights have been out back in their boxes, certainly, but to the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Birthday Dinner
I visited the Goring Dining Room for my birthday dinner last night. I was excited but also a little nervous that they might be snobbish. They could not have been nicer! My dad and I aren’t into spirits, but we had a lovely mock tail in the lounge before we were seated. The service was superb; the staff actually hold out your chair for you to sit. The interior is beautifully designed by the Earl of Snowden, son of the late Princess Margaret. The bathroom is also glorious; I’ve never seen a public bathroom with hand lotion in it. As regards the food it is equally spectacular. I had the scallop and cauliflower for appetizer, lobster omelette (a lobster tail and lettuce as well as the omelette, which was sort of an omelette and a quiche), and for dessert a scoop of lemon sorbet with Ayala champagne. All scrumptious! I should say we also got complimentary bread and butter, pumpkin tarts, and a couple of profiteroles. Since it was my birthday I also got a complimentary small dessert with a candle. Toward the end of the meal I asked where the nearest subway station was, so my dad and I could go back to our far more humble hotel. They offered to order us a cab, and the footman actually directed it to right outside the door. It was raining ever so slightly, and the concierge actually covered us with an umbrella from the door to the cab. All in all a beautiful birthday dinner!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed dinner experience
Returned for dinner after a break from this restaurant and left feeling dissatisfied and disappointed. The scallop starter was wonderful and saved the evening and a lower star review. Main course Dover Sole was cold. The service was very poor . We were brought new potatoes which were not requested. We asked for chips which never arrived. Incorrect vegetables were served and the waiter tried to convince us lettuce leaves was the Kale we ordered which never arrived. Didn’t change it when we question it either. We had to keep asking for our wine which was room temperature and somewhere in the room. Probably only served half our bottle. We left without desert as the service let us down. Very saddened with this visit.
Be the first to ReplyA very pleasant experience at the Goring for afternoon tea
My friends and I, a party of six experienced a pleasant afternoon tea today at the Goring for afternoon tea. Seated in a very light and airy conservatory, we benefitted from views of the Autumnal colours from the foliage in the garden A previous visit in September was not so smooth, however, the waiting and front of house staff more than made up for that, particularly Roberto, ensured a professional, friendly service - everything we hoped it would be. Thank you for making sure this visit was so nice.
