Food Poisoning for both of us !!
Got food poisoning here. Sorry wont be back !! Saw the cook exit the bathroom stall and not wash his hands. Maybe thats the problem who knows.
Be the first to ReplyGood but uneven
Enjoyed our recent visit but would say it was a bit uneven and could have been better. Husband and I shared the ricotta toast, arancini, octopus, and rigatoni pasta. The whipped ricotta toast was fantastic (and I donโt really like ricotta.) the rigatoni was also phenomenal. Both were good size portions and great for sharing. The arancini and octopus I have definitely had better multiple times. Our courses were not served in the order we requested, and the first three were piled together and felt super rushed. Then about 20 min before our next course. Would give them another chance if in the area again but would order more selectively and definitely not place my entire order at once.
Be the first to ReplyLoved this place!!!!
We loved this place!!! Full of locals. With a lot of flavor. Cozy little restaurant with the best bar while you wait for your table. I had one of the best Negronis!!!! The service was very friendly and helpful. Their menu looks delicious. And the food WOW!!!! I had parpadelle with braised rib and it was really incredible!!!! For sure will be back!!!

Be the first to ReplyRudest. Bartender. Ever.
What an awful evening at The Red Hen. We were a party of three without a reservation, but we knew that sitting at the bar was an option. When we checked in, the hostess told us there was a party of three at the bar that was paying their check, so we should be okay. Following her instructions, we went to check in at the bar and get on their separate waitlist. When the party of three left, however, the bartender unapologetically told us we could only have two out of the three seats, and said that the hostess only "knows a little" about the situation at the bar. When I asked if anyone else at the bar was about to get up, the bartender said very snidely, "you'll be the first to know." We ended up walking out without ordering dinner. The restaurant business is the hospitality industry. I have never encountered so little hospitality -- and so much attitude -- as we did tonight.
Be the first to ReplyDinner was the strongest course
The environment is attractive if a bit loud. The chairs are comfortable and tables a reasonable distance apart. Service was attentive without being pushy and my whole party enjoyed their dinners. But the experience was average overall because drinks and dessert were lackluster, at best. I found nothing on the wine list I wanted, the Potter's Petite Cider was like a flavorless seltzer, and when I inquired about the Fever Tree specialty sodas the server looked confused about their selection and I don't think I got what I ordered. While others said their desserts were good, my "dark" chocolate "gelato" reminded me of grocery store chocolate ice cream, pale and lightly flavored.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food and An Act of Kindness
Great Food and An Act of Kindness We made dinner reservations at The Red Hen, Washington, DC, after hearing all the buzz regarding its latest guests. We arrived before the 5:30 pm opening, and spent the time walking around the beautiful historic Bloomingdale neighborhood. I had time to study the menu; naturally I had to have its famous Mezzi Rigatoni. The fennel tomato sausage ragu was not a heavy tomato ragu, and the fennel added a different spin to the ragu. It was true to its high reviews. We ordered 2 appetizers: Chicken Liver Mousse and Grilled Spanish Octopus, which complimented the flavors of the Mezzi. The Crispy Pork Chop Milanese covered the entire dinner plate! It was breaded and well-seasoned. The restaurant filled up very quickly; it is a nice, attractive neighborhood place with the bar in the center . Our server was congenial and most attentive but not overly so. Lastly, we would like to extend our appreciation to Red Henโs Manager for the kindness shown us. Her thoughtfulness in offering an Uber when we couldnโt hail a cab was beyond hospitable. We will return to The Red Hen again. This restaurant is clearly a 5 Star on all counts!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful dinner at the Red Hen
The restaurant has a family and friendly atmosphere, slightly away from the center of DC. We tasted the famous Mezzi rigatoni with Italian sausage and fennel stew. Little cooked in France, the dish is really excellent and deserves its reputation. The fennel is very correctly dosed, slightly spicy and brings a subtle taste to the dish. The reception was perfect and very friendly. A big thank you to the manager who booked us an uber to return to the hotel. He will recognize himself. In short, an unforgettable memory of my visit to Washington. I recommend.
Be the first to ReplyThe Red Hen is worth the visit
I saw an article on Red Hen before we went to DC and knew I had to try it. I love good food and this place was known for it. My Brither in law made reservations well in advance so we could get in. We went on a Monday night at 6. The restaurant filled up fast. We started with grilled bread and cultured butter with radishes and burrata and spring pea pesto. Bothe appetizers were amazing, and our waitress brought us extra bread. For drinks, we had wine and beer. We let our waitress select our options. Main course was the Pan Roasted Halibut, Spaghetti Vede, and Mezzi Rigatoni. All the dishes were fabulous. Try the Hazelnut Torte for desert. Our waitress was exceptional. I would recommend this place when in town.
Be the first to ReplyFood average - cool place for drinking
The place is very nice, wine is good and the staff is friendly. Food is average and we wait for one hour before having our table. We ordered as a main โgemelli alla genoveseโ and โmezzi rigatoni fennel ragรนโ The gemelli were overcooked and not really good. We also ordered 2 desserts: hazelnut tart and panna cotta. On the hazelnut tart it was clearly mentioned on the menu that it was with โNutellaโ but it was not true. The hazelnut tart was not really good and came with the mascarpone ice cream that also was not good I donโt suggest to come for dinner, maybe only to take a drink

We had dinner here and really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are looking for yummy Italian food.
Be the first to ReplyPopular friendly restaurant
Lovely friendly restaurant around the corner from where we were staying.
Itโs very popular so plan ahead and book it.
We started with the pork pate and then I had the beef short rib pasta which was delicious.
Lovely meal.
Excellent But....
Service and food were excellent. Extremely good food. However they charged 20% Covid recovery fee that was explained as a fund to replace owner losses for keeping employees during the pandemic. This was not disclosed until the bill came. I guess PPP money wasn't enough to fill his pockets.
Be the first to ReplyDC delight!
Had dinner reservations and were seated promptly. Great atmosphere. The pasta was different and delicious and my husband said the scallops were some of the best heโs ever had. Delicious panna cotta for dessert and nice wine selections. The staff were all friendly and nice. Would eat here all the time if we were locals. Loved everything about it.
Be the first to ReplyHighlight meal of our trip.
Highlight meal of our trip. We spend a week in DC and this was the sight of an absolutely FLAWLESS dinner. The off menu Cacio e Pepe is a must have! The service is impeccable and this meal made we wish I got to Washington more often.
Be the first to ReplyNice Place
Boasts about hand cut, fresh meats -- yes they are excellent. Very nice bar in the back and a wonderful place for lunch.
Be the first to ReplyWorth returning
Had a fabulous dinner at this relaxed, but spot-on restaurant. Our server, Erin, was very knowledgeable and efficient and friendly. It was truly difficult to narrow down our choices to just a few that we could consume in one meal. Truly enjoyed our meal, and the wine that was suggested.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful meal for a work event
Went to the Red Hen for a work celebration. We shared appetizers. The pate was amazing and the appetizers were delicious. We enjoyed everything. The drinks and salads were good as well. Will go back
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced and mediocre
After reading the strong reviews, our party was disappointed with the average food quality for the expense. Undercooked brussel sprouts and overcooked pasta were both smothered in oddly tasting sauces. The service was more concerned with customer turnover than courtesy.
Be the first to ReplyOver rated
It takes forever to get a reservation and truthfully not worth the wait. The service was very good but the food was just average. This place is hyped up and disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyLying Hosts
Liars at the host stand. And a manager who is afraid to talk to customers. Had us patiently wait from 534pm until 904pm to be told that our table was given away. Walked out, and no apology was even entertained. Cant review on food because no table was provided for us.
