Everything you would expect from a 5 star hotel
We came up just after they opened up the roads post winter storm. Everything was great from the bubbles at reception, the bellmen and valet. They accommodated our request for a double queen (originally a king with poolside view). We had spectacular view of the snowy trees. Service was impeccable, food was amazing, ski concierge was wonderful, hot tubs were hot and accessible despite the huge snowstorm they had just had (which had trapped most of their staff coming from Reno, so they had been short staffed, yet still managed to get things ready for their guests.). Turn down service with chocolates on the bed and zen music, and aromas therapy. They also keep their garage at temperature adequate for not needing to have diesel trucks sit and idle warm before being driven. Truly everything is well thought of and taken care of. Good job Ritz!! Can't wait to return. Did not get to try out their spa, but my friend who is a local and met up with us comes here often for the locals discount pass, and says they are wonderful! Looking forward to checking it out.
Be the first to ReplySTEER CLEAR!
Front desk check in was terrific but over our 4 day stay I called the front desk 4 times and no answer. Housekeeping did a great job but I called them 3 times and got an answer once. The restaurant service was almost nonexistent. In The Living room, most empty tables were uncleared off and the 4 times we went we had to sit down at dirty table and find someone to clean it. Took forever to get a server and then to get the bill. At the main dining restaurant, we have a family breakfast and 2 meals came out after 25 minutes. Those two people were done eating before blueberry bagels came out barely toasted, cold, with only 2 visible blueberries on each. Weekend breakfast buffet was $52 which is absurd. Room service tax/service charges were ridiculous. A hamburger and chicken fingers came to $90!!!!! The resort only had one place to pick up a snack/coffee, etc., and it closes at 5 pm. You have no other options except a restaurant or room service. I would never ever stay here again. What a waste of money for subpar service and amenities.
Be the first to ReplyMeh Value for the money
The staff are very friendly, cordial, and well trained. The prices vs value leaves much to be desired. Don’t be fooled by the name. Marriott owns this and it is just another big box chain hotel room. We stay in a lot of five star, Forbes rated hotels worldwide to compare to. For over $850/night we would typically have a bidet, high end plumbing fixtures, automated shades, and TV that will at least “mirror” or have PPV movie options. Food and beverage options are criminally expensive. Eight dollars for a cup of coffee. $23 for a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Valet parking is the only option and it is $60 a day plus the valet expect to be tipped on top of that. More often than not, when I call down to valet or the front desk they do not answer the phone for at least 20 rings. Wealthy people do not become wealthy by throwing money down the drain. This just feels like getting gouged rather than a five star luxury experience. I have no problem paying for such experience when I get it but you will not receive that here. This is definitely a one and done for my wife and I. Lift tickets at Northstar are also criminally expensive. $250 per per day but you can get 20% off if you purchase online a day ahead of time. We ski cheaper in Switzerland. Inexplicably, there is an air purifier in the room. Keep in mind we are in the mountains surrounded by gorgeous pine trees. You will find no purer air anywhere. A humidifier would be incredibly helpful as the humidity levels here are very low and your nasal passages get very very dry. The duvet on the bed could be much thicker/heavier as it gets pretty cold in the winter. There is one extra thin blanket. If they have other pillow options, it is not obvious. They do offer s’mores daily and have contingency plans to do them indoors when the weather is in hospitable. Like I said, the staff is great, and are the best reason to come here. The ski valet is very helpful with your equipment and generally we had a good experience And glad we came on this vacation. Just do not expect five star Uber luxury as this is not what it is.
Be the first to ReplyOne and Done - Didn't Even Get the Basics Right
Two stars for the on mountain location and stellar mountain concierge staff who were friendly and attentive. The resort itself is lovely but the experience fell far short of the expectations set by the Ritz brand (not to mention the outrageous prices they charge). Our room wasn't serviced a single time during our 3 night stay which is frankly unacceptable for even a mid-range hotel let alone from a "luxury" hotel. Aside from the basics they also failed to deliver or provide the "special touches" for Platinum members and "welcome gift" arranged by our agent. If you are incapable of delivering these why even bother offering it?

Amazing experience thanks to their Front of the House Manager : Mr. Daniel Terrazas. It was truly a challenged experience… ending what the LA Times called it “ Monster blizzard, life threatening conditions “… Mr. Terrazas advised and helped making our trip back to New York easy. All the services at the hotel, monitored by Mr. Terrazas were in good check for safety and wellbeing of the hotel guests.

We stayed here for two nights for a wedding. It was wonderful. Every single member of staff we engaged with made a point of being friendly and went beyond expectations. They really wanted us to enjoy ourselves. The food was delicious, our room was perfect, the setting is amazing. The wedding was just magical. I don’t understand why anyone would write anything negative about this fantastic place.
Be the first to ReplyPoor manager and service
I've been bringing my family to this hotel once or twice every year for skiing since it is pretty close to Los Angeles. We appreciate the ski in and out set up. We noticed this year that some updates to the hotel were made. Ski valet and ski boots service areas have been improved with more efficient and friendly service. We also saw 2 new fire pit areas where you can reserve for private use. In general, hotel staff is very nice and accommodating. The service here has been pretty consistent for many years. Now, I don't expect anything really special. I know the level of hotel I'm staying in. I'm not at Aman resort or anywhere of that caliber. So my expectation is limited to a mid level hotel service. However, I do expect basic service and honoring of reservations made. One day, house keeping didn't service both of our rooms. I called about it. House keeping staff came over to ask if she can clean the rooms. It was after 6pm, and we had just come back from early dinner. I said it was ok and just clean them tomorrow. She apologized nicely and said that the reason she couldn't clean our rooms was that she had too many rooms to clean and didn't have time to get to ours. I didn't know what to say that. I told her not to worry, and she can do it tomorrow. This was a minor oversight. Not a big deal. One thing I'm really upset about was that I reserved one of the fire pit for our last day of the stay. I reserved it for a full day use, 9AM to 5PM, even though I was only going to use it for our lunch break. When we returned from skiing little before 2PM, our reserved fire pit was taken by someone else. I spoke to the staff including the manager about this. The manager informed me that the staff couldn't get hold of us so she assumed that we weren't going to use it and gave it away. He goes, "Don't worry about. We aren't charging you so all good." What!? He then goes, "Here's my card. Please contact me when you come back next time. I'll set you up." I was so confused. I argued with him about what the policy is when reserving a fire pit. On the website, it clearly states that there will be cancellation penalty and fees being charged if no show in regards to reserving the fire pit. Like when you reserve a pool cabana at a resort, you get charged no matter what. You use it for 5 min or the whole reserved time period. It doesn't matter. You are charged. At the same time, the hotel doesn't give that cabana away during the reserved time period. Not at this hotel. The reservation isn't honored. And throughout my conversation with the manager, he is talking to me about not being charged or giving me free reservation next visit, etc. Like money is going to solve the error the hotel staff made. I gave his business card back and said no thanks. I already spent few thousand dollars in cash just tipping your staff during our stay. I don't care about few hundred dollars you're offering to make up for the mistake. You need to do a better job and train the staff properly. I made my reservation through my Amex Centurion card concierge service. Money isn't my priority when on a vacation with my family. As much as I try not to be a demanding guest or tailoring my expectation to the environment, this type of poor service is quite disappointing. I hope improvements will be made.
Be the first to ReplyDisheartening Experience: Former Patron Mistreated During Return Visit
Having previously enjoyed luxurious stays at the Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe and having invested considerable funds there, I was deeply disheartened by my recent visit as a non-staying guest. Despite my past patronage, my experience at the valet and later at the backyard BBQ left much to be desired. Upon arrival at the valet, I was met with a dismissive attitude and made to feel like an inconvenience. Despite explaining my previous stays and intentions to dine at the backyard BBQ while my family enjoyed skiing, I was met with coldness and a lack of hospitality. The experience was disappointing, to say the least, especially considering the reputation of the Ritz Carlton for exceptional service. Later, during my visit to the backyard BBQ, I encountered similar treatment. Despite being willing to spend on lunch and cocktails, I was made to feel unwelcome and out of place. The staff seemed more focused on catering to hotel guests, neglecting the fact that visitors like myself contribute to the hotel's revenue and should be treated with the same level of respect and courtesy. Overall, my return visit to the Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe was marred by poor treatment and a lack of recognition for my past patronage. It's disheartening to see a renowned establishment fail to uphold its standards of hospitality and inclusivity. I hope that the management takes note of these issues and implements measures to ensure that all guests, regardless of their accommodation status, are treated with the respect and warmth they deserve.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible luxury experience
This property is absolutely amazing. We've been staying here for years and feel that this year they have taken their game to a whole new level. They've always had the amazing ski in/ski out location, fantastic staff, and pockets of excellence. But this year they're operating on all cylinders and our most recent stay was perfect in every way. The staff are out of this world amazing with countless examples of them going out of their way to make sure our stays have been perfect. A few to call out: -Frank went above and beyond in checking in to make sure our stay was perfect. He unexpectedly had a welcome gift delivered to our room for our daughter which she absolutely adored. -Julia at the front desk is exactly who you want greeted your guests -Gus at the Living Room lives to make sure guests have a great experience. He clearly takes above and beyond experiences to a new level. -Robbie, Brian, and the rest of the bell team are on their game (the bell and valet teams have been amazing during each of our stays over the years) -The ski valet team has really taken it up a level this year. Absolutely incredible group of folks. And the tone clearly starts with the Colin the GM who I've had the chance to chat with on each of our recent stays. I typically use this as a winter getaway but given this winter's experience I'll likely start visiting in the summer as well. Highly, highly, highly recommend the Ritz Lake Tahoe.
Be the first to ReplyWe like this hotel, but…
We have stayed here 10 time or more over the years and so we clearly appreciate everything the hotel and location has to offer. Good things this year: - Interior was updated in 2023, looks nice - Staff very friendly. New people every season but always glad to see some friendly familiar faces (Brigid has been at Manzanita for 15 years!) - Received welcome beverage at check in, upgraded room with a view and late check out offer - Food was good at Manzanita and room service Not so good things: - Big ice patch on pool deck. Our son slipped and hurt his knee. Hotel response was underwhelming (they were mainly focused on whether he need assistance - he did not but hurting you knee due to icy deck is still not fun) - One outdoor hot tub was cold on day 2, the other had greenish water with an odd odor - Access to the steam room/sauna now $75, closes at 5:30 pm. Goodby to after ski sauna. Never seen a fee to use steam room at any other RC globally. - Blackberries at breakfast buffet big time moldy, got taken care off quickly by staff - Ski season room prices are off the chart ($1500+ per night), making above issue extra noteworthy So, are we going to be back? Yes, we love the overall experience and remain hopeful that other glitches won’t add up again next time.
Be the first to ReplyBest Property in Tahoe
The Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe is a fantastic property. The location is incredible with ski in/ski out. It is a beautiful property with its rustic mountain decor with really nice rooms. What makes this property quite special though is its people. The general manager, Mr. Perry is one of the best hotel GM's ever. He is friendly, helpful, pro-active, and a great leader of his team. The hotel manager Mr. Bonnamain is a great hotel manager. The property has the best concierge of any property I have ever stayed in Mr. Switzer. Gus who helps lead the lounge team is terrific. The valet team, the lounge team, the ski valet, and the restaurant teams all are wonderful. The entire team always goes out of their way to ensure my wife and I have a special and memorable experience whenever we stay here. It is not always easy for hotels to deliver a memorable experience because it takes great management, leadership, coordination, and effort to deliver a truly special experience. After staying over 1,500 nights at high end Marriott properties I know how challenging it can be to deliver an extraordinary stay every time. This unique team always does though and encourage anyone visiting Tahoe to stay at this truly incredible hotel!
Be the first to ReplyGREAT STAY! AMAZING STAFF!
We stayed at the RITZ for three nights for a ski trip. Wonderful hotel and stay! Would definitely go again! Loved the location. Hotel itself is well built and lots of amenities. Wished we used them more. Barry (concierge), Porters/Baggage Helpers, Nelly (front desk), Wait staff at central bar area and ski porters were UNBELIEVEABLE. Hands down some of the best staff i've ever met. Wish i had written more names down as they all deserve recognition. Very friendly and went above and beyond. Staff at 430 smore time, amazing. Kids well entertained with smores and movie night and teddy bears. Very thoughtful. Food, very good. Yes, pricey but well worth it given location and comfort. Large portions actually. Easy to access village with gondola. Loved the hot tub and pool. Unbeatable access to the mountain to ski. Only drawback were the rooms themselves. They need upgraded. We entered the room, there was a towel under the sheets. The beds and artwork in the room are horribly outdated. So are the sheets. Too short and the bed skirts/curtains, are very old (at least looking, and outdated) Understood the hotel is mountain based, but it still needs a refresh in regards to the rooms. Some things like sink pressure and tubs were not working to satisfaction in regards to pressure and things but all said, amazing stay! Tips: not worth going to Truckee. King of far. Also, bring some small breakfast if you dont want to pay alot or want a quick meal before skiing. Tip: Use the hot tub and tip well. This staff goes above and beyond!!! AMAZING quality hair products too in the shower!
Be the first to ReplyHousekeeping Woes
We have been coming here for its location for years. Prices have risen dramatically and everyone is very nice but housekeeping is very spotty and thats not right. Period. We expect things made up and supplies replenished automatically. Period. They need to try harder and hopefully they do. They struggled thru Covid and we supported them thru tough times and they need to deliver at a high level given the prices, period. Lip service is not real service. Luv you guys, most times......
Be the first to ReplyRitz would rather have me drive in a blizzard than reschedule
There's a reason this Ritz has a 30 day cancelation. It's because this is the worst of them all. I had to beg them to reschedule (not even refund) to a different date because of winter storm. But they refused stating that roads will ONLY be closed on the first night and I can drive on the second. That information was incorrect as well because it was snowing heavy through the weekend. They did not give me an option and I lost $3.5K. Save your money. I would recommend do not book this hotel during winter because they won't accommodate any changes even if the hotel is unapproachable by road. Avoid.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service, nice room with convenient location
Great service with awesome location!Comfortable bedding and nice room. Awesome food at Manzanita, especially the Pinecone dessert was so delicious that my husband almost ordered another one! Would come again!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Location Lousy Management
The hotel rooms were very nice as you would expect from a Ritz Carlton--not overly grand but nice. The only reason I give it even 1 star is the location. The breakfast buffet was very good (and expensive) but the service was lacking--perhaps another "staff shortage" issue faced by the service industry? But when paying Ritz prices one would expect more. I would like to note that Chef Ulysis was great-and made the best jam. After spending over 5K for the room and another 1K on incidentals PLUS $55.00/day resort I was not even allowed to use the spa hot tub--even though my husband had paid for a Spa service- and I had tried to book a massage but they had no time convenient for me-When asked why the resort fee didn't cover the spa the manager told me there were "resort services" I was allowed to use --she even pointed out that I was "allowed" to use the retail store at no charge--EVEN though you do not have to be a guest to go and use the retail store--what a ridiculous statement We had wanted to check out one day sooner than originally planned (we had pre-paid our stay) and when we asked the manager she said that if we had booked directly with them they would be able to do something but we could try the 3rd party booking agent. We then contacted Amex (who we booked through) and Amex said they did not have a problem amending the reservation if the hotel would allow it--so Amex contacted the hotel but was told that they would not refund an early departure ----so I went back to the manager, since she said if the 3rd party was amenable they would be--another manager, Sara Taylor, specifically told me that only Amex could alter the reservation and that is "in their terms and conditions"--so went back to Amex and after 45 minutes of Amex trying to get the early departure refund--was told that the Ritz would not allow it. I spoke to Sara Taylor and told her that if she would just have said the hotel was not willing to refund the early departure I would have not wasted anymore time on it--but she clearly indicated that it was up to Amex--which it was not. She only had to own up to a policy that was in place knowing that I may not like it--I would much rather have had an honest statement instead of a run around. I will never stay at this hotel again --and will probably never stay at a Ritz again.
Be the first to ReplyAlways a great experience
I’ve stayed here 30-40 nights in the past few years, it’s probably one of my favorite hotels, in no small part because of the location. It’s true ski-in/ski-out, located mid mountain at Northstar - you can’t beat it. My recent visit was great, as always, but not perfect. One thing I have noticed over the past few years is that there seems to be a lot of turnover. This isn’t unique to this location, but it seems like the Ritz-Carlton way is getting a little lost in the shuffle. Multiple times I had issues and went to speak to the front desk for help, and the response was a lot of over the top friendliness and apologies but no real solutions. I get it - when you’re new you don’t want to do something you’re not supposed to, but that’s the reason you spend so much to stay at the Ritz, they take good care of you and make things right when something goes wrong. What I will say is this issue doesn’t seem to extend to management. I had a few issues with check-in, and Lara at the front was amazing to work with and helped make things right for me. Similarly, Mike at the bar was awesome in every way. It’s interactions like those which keep me coming back year after year. Hopefully they’ll be able to work out the rest of the kinks now that we’re on the other side of COVID.
Be the first to ReplySPA REVIEW
This is only a review for the Spa. Myself and 3 friends all went to the spa on the property on our last day. We were all very disappointed. Below are just a few things that made the price not worth and the overall experience disappointing. 1. The steam room was broken 2. The hot towel machines were broken in the treatment room. 3. The relaxation room was so dingy. It felt like the lobby of a holiday inn. The furniture was old and dirty and the snacks stale. 4. There are no quality products to use on the premises for showering/washing your hair etc. Additionally there was no lotion etc. after you get out of the shower. 4. The jacuzzi didn't feel very clean either. Given the cost of both staying at the Ritz and the cost of the treatments, we all really expected more. It was a shame. On the plus side, the treatments include 2 glasses of champagne. The outdoor pool atmosphere really is phenomenal!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing time!! Excellent
Totally amazing, ski on ski off.. the lessons are right out the door. Ski shop was well organized! Best I've seen It's all expensive but hey, it's worth it!! Great spot, Gondola down to little village. It's perfect. Barry at the front desk is the man..
Be the first to Replydisappointing
For the money we paid, I was disappointed. The staff either doesn't know what they're doing or makes you feel special. LOVE the shuttle to Truckee. Reason I'm posting this is I left an item in master bath drawer (100% sure) and it was worth thousands of dollars. I called next morning after checkout knowing it was still there. Several calls had to be made as I felt as it wasn't being handled well. After hours of stress and all the calls they said there was nothing there. BS!!! Housekeeping must have taken it. I am seriously beside myself because of the amount of money we paid for this hotel to lose an item that expensive AND it was very noticable. In a large zip lock back with several jars along with it - basically the size of a flattening hair iron. Crazy thing is I left a make up bag in a place a tenth of the price per night and they called me once they found it. VERY FRUSTRATED. Brand new purchase. I know it was my fault leaving it there but didn't thing a bunch of vultures would be taking it.
Be the first to ReplyA good lunch in summer too!
We ate at the Manzanita for lunch over the 4th of July weekend. Have stopped for lunch after skiing eating outside on the patio, so this was quite different. Food was good and while very few people there, service was very good.
