Celebrating at the River Cafe
Okay so let’s start with the location - the view is spectacular as you dine. The engagement as you enter is one where you feel special nothing is missed your time with them is their only consideration. The food was excellent each course rivalled the previous one with the chef’s complimentary courses exposing your visual senses as well as you palate to new sights and tastes. It’s fair to say that we chose River Cafe to celebrate three milestones Jen & Dave’s 70 birthdays and Catherine & Clinton’s 25 wedding anniversary both special occasions. The River is most definitely the place to do so. We had the opportunity to thank our chef who came out to meet us and shared other places to try whilst in New York. We were aware that the bill would be high but we felt that the food, atmosphere, location and attention of the knowledgeable staff reflected value for money. We will be back on our next visit to New York. Catherine, Clinton, Jen & Dave.
Be the first to ReplyGreat location, superb food but overpriced and a it dated
Fantastic location and a very memorable meal. The food was delicious, but they’re not scared to charge and overall I wouldn’t rush back based on how much our meal cost. All the staff were very attentive except for the older wine waiter, we were disappointed with his manner. He was extremely grumpy and serious and seemed a bit over serving us he also never advised us that we had half a bottle of wine left as we were coming to the end of the meal. I would have expected better for the cost of the meal.

Best of the best. Impeccable service with splendid views of the river and Brooklyn Bridge. Each course is a culinary delight and artwork in itself. Life piano music rounded out the dining experience. A perfect place for a memorable dining experience or special occasion. I love that everyone is dressed up as well.

From the view to the service. From the drinks to the food. I had a once in a lifetime experience with a super attentive and friendly sommelier and several greetings from the kitchen even though I sat alone on my window seat. The soft light and piano music rocked me gently to the amazing flavors exploding in my mouth. I would book it again and again. And I am well educated in french cuisine! But next time I‘d not order a lobster. That plate was a mistake. The rest nevertheless was wonderful! Food heaven!

When you go to a fancy restaurant you expect to have a delightful meal, some dishes were nice but the lobster wasn’t fresh and suppose that a qualified restaurant can’t commit such a mistake…
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Dinner Experience
My wife and I had dinner at the River Cafe in February 2024. I have lived within walking distance of the restaurant since 1985 and even went there for Sunday brunch back in the late 1980's (when they still served brunch). I had read reviews of the River Cafe over the years and the consensus back then was that the restaurant offered fantastic views of the East River and lower Manhattan (which it does) but the food was only so-so. Forget about those reviews. Our dinner there was fantastic. The River Cafe offers a three course prix fixe (fixed price) menu (which you can find on their website). Reservations are required and the dress code for men includes a suit jacket and a collared shirt. The people who waited on us were very professional and friendly - from our sommelier (wine steward) Alex to our wait captain Bernie. We enjoyed our appetizers of bay scallops and octopus and our main dishes of branzino and sea bass and finally our dessert of grapefuit souffle and the chcolate "Brooklyn Bridge." The food was unbelievably delicious and we were treated like royalty. Between the great food and service and the spectacular view, we are very much looking forward to our next visit there.

This wasn’t our first experience of the river cafe we have been twice before and was always an amazing experience apart from this time. we were sat down and handed the menus had literally a min to pick what we wanted to eat and menus whipped away. we were then given an the Amuse-bouche which the waiter rushed to tell us what it was, no longer was our plates cleared the starter was on the table . it was like a conveyor belt so rushed no time between course, it’s as if they wanted you out as quick as possible i have never felt the way ever in any other restaurant i felt uncomfortable and anxious it was horrible. The food was ok not as good as it used to be will never be back which is a shame as it was always my favourite restaurant to go to in new york.
Be the first to ReplyNice moment for us
Nice place to be (to much noisy but it's a personal feeling). Everything was perfect for us. Good service level. A little bit overpriced compare to other "Star" Michelin restaurants.

We had a wonderful dinner at the River Cafe following our elopement. The service is impeccable. All food was delicious & you cannot beat the views. It was a very special night & was the perfect way to end our wedding day.

Amazing views , best place to enjoy NY skyline , very romantic , friendly staff and good food. It is high price but worth it.
Be the first to ReplyAverage food at best
This is an old school dining experience: really good service and an overly smart dress code that's clouding average food. The good: It's a beautiful restaurant setting right on the water under the Brooklyn bridge. The service is great and they had a good looking and reasonably priced wine list. The reason why we'll never return: First off, the food is average at best. They offer a three-course menu to every diner at $200pp. We ordered 3 starters, the "wild shrimp" being the only dish worth re-ordering. We both ordered the venison for main - the meat was very well cooked and very tender but served with "fried pasta"- soggy and generally bewildering why you would serve it alongside a gorgeous piece of meat. The restaurant has a Michelin star - maybe earned 20 years ago but today, only seemingly fuelled by old school money, white coat waiter service and a smart jacket dress code. It's over-priced, mostly tasteless food smothered by a stuffy and old fashioned fining environment. Despite the impeccably trained service, the restaurant took itself way too seriously. My husband wore a grey textured jacket with lapels, the matredee -Alfredo - insisted he borrowed he borrowed a restaurant pin-striped jacket instead. Having taken it off whilst eating, Alfredo came a second time to insist he wore it while eating, then followed up a third time to ensure he put it on. Food and dress code aside, we've been lucky enough to eat some of the best food in the world, and it was only here - with average food at best - did they make us feel uncomfortable enough to feel passionate about never returning. If you're in NYC, I would avoid this place like the plague - there's a myriad of amazing restaurants that you feel more enjoyment from (and are a lot less expensive). As a separate note and a direct note to Alfredo, the madradee: you have a lot to learn about hospitality. You seem to think it's about a cheap black jacket and a fake smile, but it's actually about elegance and about making the customer feel like they're being treated to a night of luxury that they want to hurry back to. The restaurant you run is the last place I feel welcome and I'd rather thousands of other NY restaurants for a special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyHey look out the window, it’s New York!!
Stunning! What a location, if your after the view of the Manhattan skyline at night then this is the place to do it from! Fine dining with an exceptional view. Unfortunately the Bar was very understaffed on our arrival, however the Girl making the drinks was doing an exceptional job. We did have to wait a while for a drink, even being told we couldn’t have any water while we waited (I’m not sure the lad behind the bar understood what I was asking for)?? However, once we were seated everything improved rapidly! Service was excellent, and the food even better! No, it is not cheap, but if your willing and able to pay the price, then this is the level of hospitality you get. Would love to return again to get a daytime view of the city!
Be the first to ReplyIncomparable view and VERY expensive
Let’s face it, the only reason to go to the River Cafe is the view, at night is best. There is no a la carte menu. You must order the full menu, currently $195 per head. You can expect to spend $250-300 person. Wine is north of $30 per glass and bottles start below $100 and go over $1000. The service is great and the food is very good. The warm fois gras serve with a tiny pieces of brioche and quince was terrific. The other appetizers were equally good. Special mention to the grilled octopus. The main course were also good, but the theme of small portions continued. Fish portions were tiny. The duck was fine with “Brussel sprout leaves”. I counted two leaves. There were about 5-6 forkfuls of duck. The dessert was the highlight. The flourless chocolate cake with a chocolate Brooklyn Bridge perched on top was artistic and very good. The coffee soufflé was just OK. Bottom line go if: someone else is paying; or you are trying to impress a potential client or date.

Overpriced for such a experience. I requested a table next to the window and they didn't attend it. Even though the view is amazing. The food is not bad but don't expect a Michelin star level. The service is the poorest ever. Our table was the ice bucket station for the surrounding tables and ours, but the funniest fact was we weren't served. When the bottle of wine was over, the sommelier came to us to serve, then the action was repeated by the waiter with the sparkling water, ridiculous. We won't go back.

Booked this place months in advance for my wifes birthday. Needed to use credit card to make a reservation. Was called by the restaurant staff Two days in advance to confirm our arrival.
Very Nice staff. Amazing location with a beautiful view of Manhattan and the Brooklyn bridge.
The food was amazing. Pricey But worth it.
A Great Dining Experience
Just recently had dinner at The River Cafe. What a great experience! The food was delicious. The service was over the top. And, the views were amazing!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing view, food and experience in Brooklyn!
The amazing view is matched by the amazing food and service. One of the best meals you can have in New York City. Although it use to be a boat it doesn't feel small or claustrophobic. The dishes show real thought and craftmanship even down to the tasty garnish. The experience is worth the $$$.
Be the first to ReplyExquisite in every way!
Have only good things to say about this place. The venue is fantastic, location wise - underneath the Brooklyn Bridge with incredible views of Hudson River and Manhattan. We were under a very short time frame in order to get to a Broadway show. They were very understanding and helped make it possible for us to enjoy a full course meal with dessert and still get there on time. The staff was all very professional and yet not too formal. We had octopus, oysters, filet mignon, lobster and the amazing chocolate Brooklyn Bridge dessert. HIGHLY recommend!!!
Be the first to ReplySunday buffet
Food was bad, only had a buffet to offer, no food off menu which they used offer. Help was completely helpless, would not check on table for more coffee, tea or water after first order. I ordered 2 eggs overeazy, took cook 4 times and still put out over cooked, stuck to bottom of pan eggs. Most sorry excuse for a buffet in PVR. Been going there 15 yrs, never again!
Be the first to ReplyGreat views, perfect date night
Had been wanting to go for a really long time. This restaurant is beautiful, it really is. From the entrance, to the table setting, it’s just very romantic. They have a strict dress code but it seems that it only applies to certain people. I was wearing a very formal turtle neck and a blazer which I took off but was immediately asked to put it back on. Yet some people were wearing jeans and two others were wearing track suits, like the one’s Paris Hilton used to wear. Other than that I would totally recommend this restaurant for a date night. The food was very good.
Be the first to ReplyWow!!!
We went there with friends WOW!!! what a view it was by Hudson River....Amazing Manhattan and Hudson River view at night.... I cant ask more....I ordered a steak which was ok, nothing was special about it but I liked it... The view? I cant forget it...Very nice atmosphere. I would go there again again and again if I am in Brooklyn again... The price is high though.
Be the first to ReplyA special place
First night in NYC and have wanted to eat here for so long. The restaurant approach twinkles with lights and inside the tree and decorations are just perfect. Beautiful view, great service. Food was lovely. I haven't given 5 stars as I do think the older staff could be friendlier. The younger waiters were lovely. I think service has changed, and you want to be able to eat fabulous food and leave having bonded well with the staff. My favourite UK restaurants make me feel like that and I am therefore loyal to them. May not visit again.
Be the first to ReplyWhen did Michelin last visit?
I booked this restaurant on the advice of some family members who had been before, albeit 5 or more years ago. It is somewhat out of the way from Manhattan, but given this place has a Michelin star it should be worth a trip. On arrival it’s a bit of a timewarp, not sure the decor had been touched in a few years, but has a charm and air of tradition which was nice. The view is incredible, and the piano player creates a great ambiance.
The Amuse-bouche was odd, the pork I’m guessing was supposed to be crisp, but was a bit sad and overdone, it reminded me of a leftover piece of bacon from a breakfast plate. The centimetre cube of butternut squash and lukewarm shot of soup were inoffensive but pointless, this plate really added nothing to the meal. Sommelier service was slow, admittedly she needed to be in more than a few places at once, but my expectations of a Michelin starred restaurant is that there would be more than one sommelier for the significant number of tables in the restaurant. The waiting staff and managers were pleasant, but there was nothing slick about the service, certainly nothing like the service we have experienced in similar rated restaurants. The french waiter in the white jacket was very friendly and professional, and the manager who I think was called Carl was very personable and attentive. My starter of steak tartar was ok, though there was a very awkward 30 seconds or so as the waiter leant over me to mix the dish. I’m not sure why they cant do this from a trolley or even at the front of the table to avoid the awkward encounter? My partners starter of oysters was ok, not great, and it’s worth noting that they are cooked, not raw, which is not mentioned on the menu. My venison main course was a shocking dish, the cook had gone way overboard with the pepper meaning I couldn’t taste anything else on the plate, the side of spätzle was a strange and badly executed addition. My partners lamb was mediocre, the fat wasn’t fully rendered leaving an unpleasant texture, and the meat quality was under par for the price. I’m very surprised this place has a Michelin star given the food quality. I can only imagine many people come here and convince themselves they are having great food because they are lost in the view and atmosphere, but in reality if this same food was being served in a basement, would anyone bother? I doubt it! Desserts are really average, the chocolate Brooklyn bridge would be a great addition to a range of cakes in the bakery section of a grocery store, but really is nowhere close to good enough quality to be served in a Michelin star restaurant. My soufflé was good, the accompanying sorbet and ‘sickly beige butter’ were not so good, and again a pointless and badly executed addition.
I’m being very critical in this review because I went to this restaurant expecting to pay upwards of $500 for our meal, and for that price the food should be so much better than it is, and the service should be so much better than it is. As it happened, due to my complaints I paid $295 dollars for a meal which I really didn’t enjoy and did not eat all of, and the birthday treat for my partner was not what it should have been. So unfortunately I would not return, nor would I recommend this restaurant to anyone else. In fact I would actively tell people to find somewhere better!
If you take away the view, there is very little substance left to this restaurant. On a further note I must mention the door attendants who appear to spend most of the time leaning against the wall looking through their mobile phones. Having taken a few photos for a couple in the courtyard, one then turned round to the other and made disparaging faces about having to take the photos, which I found disingenuous, and soured further my opinion on this restaurant. We won’t be back...
OMG. Best meal ever!
By and far one of the best meals I have ever had . . . Not only was the food extraordinary but the staff was incredible, the view of Manhattan amazing and the ambience was perfect. Highly recommend!
