What a true disappointment.
I had wanted to have the High Tea for my birthday celebration with 2 other friends. In scanning the menus before making reservations, it clearly showed a High Tea fir $65 and another for $95. The only difference was 5 different caviars were offered on the $95 menu and 2 on the $65 menu. Upon seating our request for High Tea automatically came with only 2 "tiny" Bellinis with a "dab" of caviar on top. What a disappointment. The 3 tier of foods were 2 tiers of small finger sandwiches of which one was turkey and cheese. On top was the small caviar. The 3 tier dessert was also a disappointment. 3 small scones on the bottom, 2 small miniature cupcakes on the second tier and 2 small chocolates on the top tier. Champagne was $30 extra for a very small glass. I would only complement the teas offered. Very good. When we asked for a picture of us to commemorate the experience, our waiter's reply,Of course, we do this all the time for you tourist". Service, food, and atmosphere was awful. Some employee was smoking out back of the kitchen and the smoke also came in the dinning room. Room was so hot, but could not get the heat turned down. Never go again. What a disappointment and costs were over $500 including tip
Be the first to ReplyStriking atmosphere, great service.
Not a place to visit just to order a burger or basic western food. Kulebyaka (Salmon Wellington) was impressive. This dish is hard to find and since every friend group has at least one person who has tried every other conceivable preparation of salmon, this will be received well. Only complaint from me is that some of the prices (dessert, some apps) are arbitrarily high.
Be the first to ReplyCame here during restaurant week and really enjoyed it.
The decor and overall layout felt so authentic and Russian! They have everyone sit in booths, and you face the main room instead of each other. The food itself was great, and if you go during restaurant week you get a good deal - we were both so full at the end of this.

Eh. Looks nice, food was middling, portions were small, wait staff not interested. Table of four. Had one Caviar Tasting split between two, and a Russian Salad split between the other two. One entrée, an app. as a main, and two soups as mains. Five wines and an ice tea, were the drinks. $500 w/ tax & tip.Glad we went. Might even go back for a drink some time. The possibilities are great. Not happening now though. Eh.

Terrible food. Terrible service. Extraordinarily overpriced. Save your dollar- this place has seen it's time.

It pains me to say it, but when I ordered tea, I got a pot with a Harney and Sons teabag. A teabag. A teabag from a box that I could have bought in a grocery store. At a world-famous tea room. What? The staff and ambiance were what I'd expected (it's the Russian Tea Room, famous for opulence and good service). But the food was blah- the tea sandwiches were cold triangles of regular white and wheat bread with egg and tuna salad. That's it. The place was EMPTY except for my party and a few others. I tipped the wait staff well, not just for the service, but because I felt sorry for them having to serve such embarrassing fare. I feel like the wait staff is on board the Titanic, and it's getting ready to sink, because it's using store-bought teabags to stay afloat. I really couldn't believe it.
Be the first to ReplyA memorable visit to a New York landmark.
The beef stroganoff was the best I've ever had. Good service but an unusual ambiance (we had to listen to every word from another table--across the room--including their internet video sharing.). Try the tea service!
Be the first to ReplyAlright, me as a Russian born in Russia.
I can tell you, this place is a rip off. This Russia food is way too overpriced & the quality of food is not the best. The restaurant setting is nice but the quality of food is terrible. Some of the dishes are over salted & it doesn't taste that great. I brought my American friends here & they thought the food was 2/5 stars. Plus, it's way too overpriced.

I wonder what this place was like back in its prime? It just seems so beat down and sad. You can see a hint of yesteryear in the bones of the tea room itself with its swooping, baguettes and high ceiling. But I really don't know how they stay open. All the reviews here are pretty accurate. Most of what we ate was stale, and extraordinarily expensive especially if you have a glass of champagne. Ridiculous even by New York standards. We were largely ignored even though there were very few tables being served. Thankfully I just enjoyed the company I was with, and it kept me distracted from how unbelievably sad the situation is.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service.
Nice and cozy ambiance. The Royal high tea was a bit lacking in variety but overall fresh and good. I have a suggestion to not serve butter rolled as a ball. It is near impossible to take any as it was so hard and kept rolling off the plate. The rest of the menu looked pretty good. I'd return to try some of the dinner and lunch entrees.
Be the first to ReplyReally cool experience and highly recommend trying the tea
Really cool experience and highly recommend trying the tea service your first time in! It's a lot of food for your money and the sandwiches you get are absolutely delicious. Service is phenomenal and the aesthetic and ambiance are truly unique. I only left off a few stars because the sweets course was a bit overly sweet to be able to enjoy for me personally, but If you have a serious sweet tooth then this is for you!

Made a reservation for the tea room, vibes were very nice, felt Boujee, BUT so expensive $95 per person? We came for the teas, and just for tea and mini sandwiches and mediocre desserts that's absurd. The mini sandwiches were ight, the dessert was awful, they bought out a mini truffle (looks like it came out of a chocolate box), a random Asian tasting pastry, 3 huge scones, whack macaron, and 2 mini cupcakes that looks like they came out of a Walmart box. The list of teas to choose from was only 5 options. For munch less, Prince Tea House atleast has a huge variety of teas and full size SLICES of cake. 215 dollars for a cup of tea and sides is absurd. I told them it's my friends birthday, and they just lit a candle on the stand? Lol not even one free extra dessert or a song sung. Anyway won't be coming back.

Took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day and it was a mess from the start, where should I begin? They advertised that anyone doing the Valentine's Day menu would get a red booth. When they took us to be seated, they tried giving us a regular table in the center of the room on the second floor. I told them no, they advertised the red booth for Valentine's Day. The guy said- everyone's here for a Valentine's Day menu but if you want to wait then you can, he told us to go back to the main floor but he didn't come with us, he took the stairs instead. When we got downstairs, he spoke to the manager (we didn't know it was the manager) and told her the situation, he mentioned the advertisement and they both seemed clueless about what was written in it. Then she tells him- well, I don't know what to say then. The manager then comes over and tells us she has a booth for us, it's not set yet so we will just have to wait a couple of min, so she escorts us back up to 2 and as we're walking, she tells us someone gave our booth away so had us waiting again but by the elevators on 2. Finally after being seated, she thanked us for waiting and wished us a happy valentines but the service was extremely slow. They gave us each a roll instead of a bread basket and the roll was tough. It would have been better if it was warm. The 2nd appetizer we ordered managed to come out before the 1st appetizer. Our appetizers came out maybe 20 min into our seating. We called our waiter over to ask about the cocktail menu, we also asked about complimentary champagne, he told us someone else would bring it. Before even asking us about cocktails, they took the menu from us and walked off. We had to stop them again to order our cocktails. The cocktails did not taste good. My girlfriend had the ballet russe and I had the cavatini - the cavatini tasted like pure vodka in a martini glass. After finally getting our cocktails, we waited over an hour for our entrees to come out. I ordered the ribeye with lobster mash and my girlfriend ordered the duck breast. The sauce was like gelatin, there wasn't any lobster in the mash. My girlfriend didn't get a duck breast, they gave her a drum with thigh. We brought it up with our waiter and he got the manager for us. This is where we found out the woman earlier was the manager - she apologized that they ran out of duck breast and asked if my girlfriend wanted something else? It would have been nice if they told customers they were out of something instead of just substituting. I also mentioned the lobster. We told her we already waited over an hour for the entree since eating our appetizers and did not want to wait any longer so she just walked off. The desserts came out - we ordered the red velvet cake and the opera. The red velvet cake had so much frosting on it 1 it tasted like half of the cake was frosting. The opera didn't taste like opera, it tasted more like tiramisu. My girlfriend and I go to a lot of places and tend to rate things so we had a tough one with russian tea room. When we spoke about it, we both agreed that we would have made it fall somewhere along 1.5 stars but 1 star was too low and 2 stars was a bit high. Our initial rating would have been around 2.5 but there were constant issues and no resolution. If I can rate some of the categories with 0 stars I wouldAmbiance 4 starsFood 3 starsDrinks 1 starService 1 star The server was not good at all. The water boy was actually more helpful than the server. We kept asking the server about our entree and he had to keep checking on it. Over an hour wait for entrees and the entrees were incorrect?? They should be ashamed. By the time we had our entrees, the restaurant was mostly empty. We were both excited for russian tea room but it was a let down
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely delightful experience.
The meat in short rib dish was fall off the bone tender and the ambiance is unique in a good way. They support Ukraine and I believe a Ukrainian person owns a business.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for Afternoon Tea on a Sunday.
I've been to my fair share of Afternoon Tea experiences around NYC at this point at various price points. The Russian Tea Room's Afternoon Tea is a disappointment. It is $80 for the standard package. I got the Formosa Oolong tea. It was pretty decent and I did enjoy multiple refill pots of it. But the food was rather disappointing. First course - sandwiches/savory items. They do offer a larger variety of sandwiches/savory items than many other tea experiences. There were a total of 8 different flavors, but they can be very hit and miss. I enjoyed the croque monsieur and the shrimp remoulade sandwiches the best. They were good sized and very tasty. It was my first time tasting caviar, so I can't really speak to this area, but I thought they were fine. But some of the flavors were a really poor choice. There was a blue cheese flavored sandwich that I could not stand. I took a small bite and left the rest. Blue Cheese is a very strong flavor and it's either you love or hate it. I just don't think it's a good choice to put on a platter like this. There was also an artichoke sandwich that had way too much pepper in it. It was very out of balance and not great to eat. I had to chug it down with the tea.Second course - scones and desserts. They offered chocolate chip scones, which I thought was a good idea. You don't see many chocolate flavored scones at teas....but these were not scones. They were basically biscuits. It was dense and not flakey. At least they were warm. The flavor was fine. Usually with scones you would get an airy whipped butter or a clotted cream. Not here, you just get some cold butter and tiny jars of jam. The jars of jam are like what you would see at the Marriot hotel at breakfast, cheap and disappointing. I feel like they really should've made a jam in house. There was a caramel macaron that was very good - it was a large macaron and very chewy-in a good way! There were some cupcakes and a dollop of frosting. Very unprofessional looking. It looked like something I would make at home for myself. The presentation really needs some work. They also tasted pretty cheap, like something I would buy at the supermarket. There were also some chocolate truffles and petit fours. Those were ok. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. The service was really good. The servers were very polite and attentive. And I enjoyed the décor. It was eclectic and fun. Definitely transport you to a different place. Overall, for $80 I think the food quality and presentation should've been much higher. I've been to more affordable tea experiences and the food was much better. Maybe their standard lunches and dinners are much better, but I would skip the tea. Disappointing since it is called the Russian Tea Room....
Be the first to ReplyThe tea and scones were good.
The rest was mediocre. The service was slow. Like 20 mins for someone to come over and even take a drink order. Which is interesting given that they have a strict 90 minute table policy. I have had much much better afternoon tea food. This was underwhelming. We didn't eat most of it. It's an expensive experience to miss the mark so badly.

**JUST TO NOTE, THE RUSSIAN TEA ROOM DOES STAND WITH UKRAINE. Came here for dinner for a friend's birthday and once you walk in, it captures modernist Russian-style decor. They do offer afternoon elegant high tea and have the finest vodka selections. The service was great and the food was amazing! Things I ordered:- Dushbara: Lamb dumplings boiled in lamb broth and served with cilantro and vinegar- Pelmeni: Siberian style with sour cream, mushrooms and peas- Lamb Chops: Seared lamb chops crusted with Georgian spices and served with roasted root vegetables and pomegranate syrup- Kulebyaka: Pastry wrapped salmon with slow-cooked onions, mushrooms and mixed vegetables with carrot and raisin herbed rice pilaf and dill beurre blanc- RTR Burger: Grilled 8oz. wagyu burger with grilled balsamic onions and blue cheese on toasted bun. Served with sweet potato fries.

Came here for restaurant week , had a really lovely dinner over here. The borscht soup is perfect for the cold weather. Staff was really nice to us!

How stupid are libs in this city? They aren't going to this nyc iconic establishment because it has the name Russia in it? These nyc libs are disgusting. What's next? McDonald's Big Mac because it has Russian dressing? Go have a nice dinner and enjoy the food and ambiance.

I was visiting my son in Soho and always wanted to see this restaurant. We made a reservation for 4:00 pm on Sunday thinking that we would partake in the afternoon tea. We made a last minute decision to switch to a caviar tasting with a vodka tasting. I recommend this experience highly. The presentation and the caviar was exquisite. Our waiter, Edmond, was attentive and gave us the historical history of the restaurant. I was very impressed with the service, ambiance and quality of the food. I didn't have the chance to try their tea service but I recommend their caviar tasting!

My roommate and I had a magical New York experience at the Russian Tea room. This restaurant is so soaked in history it's insane and the interior is very cool. We came for restaurant week since it can tend to be more expensive. The service is impeccable. I tried borscht for the first time and really enjoyed it. The beef stroganoff was delicious and the NY cheesecake was heavenly. I wasn't feeling up to alcohol so the staff whipped me up a delicious mock tail that was a take on a mule. What made this experience extra special was we asked one of the staff to take our photo at the end of the night in the booth and he said no this is not good enough follow me, he lead us upstairs and turned on the lights to the closed 2nd floor just for us. We got to see the dancing bear that has live fish inside of it and the magical tree and allowed us to take much better pictures in the upstairs dining area. It was so neat to talk with a long time staff member about working in such an iconic location and to get to see the 2nd floor.

Felt like I was in an old school movie scene. Service was fast and great & the food... so good. Deserves more than the 3 stars. Probably the best restaurant I went to during my trip.

Coming to the Russian Tea Room feels like walking into a part of history. The interior ambiance, and knowing the walks of life that have come through here, made this an eye-opening experience.I walked in my dining companion on a Sunday evening without a reservation, and was quickly seated. Walking through the rich interior with the beautiful decor was already a treat for the eyes.We started out with the borscht. It was sour and yet not too curling on the tongue! The beet flavor comes through in mellow nuances. The scallops were so tender and delicate! Slicing through each one was like slicing through soft butter. They were very light and flavorful. The mushrooms added a fun, chewy textural contrast to the soft scallop. The czar's gold parfait is a visual treat, as well as a tasteful one! The ice cream itself is a bit hard and almost butter-like texture, which is my only critique. The candied almonds were sweet and salty, and the chocolate sauce was rich.Overall, I recommend, if you wish to sample a historic establishment!

Definitely not 80$ worth. Sandwiches were scattered and very few. 3 scones and over cooked Madeline. Do not recommend

The service was amazing, my water glass was never empty and the staff were very friendly. I ordered the scallop dish with mushrooms and a butternut squash purée and the dish lacked flavor and was over-salted. I could barely eat the scallops because of how salty they were, the mushrooms were over cooked and the purée didn't have much flavor at all. My guests ordered the beef Wellington which also was a disappointment, the puff pastry was soggy and the meat was over cooked. Although this restaurant is a well known establishment in NY, I was disappointed with the food quality.
