A splendid evening in a perfect setting.
Dinner was delicious and the service could not have been better. And we met both Simone and her husband, the chef.
A meal to remember!
Another great dinner at The Simone.
This is my favorite restaurant of all time. The food and service are beyond reproach. I started with a tart with prosciutto, mozzarella, and a sunnyside up egg. The main course was perfectly seared sea scallops. The little touches make it special - there are real linen towels in the men's room; the house bourbon is Maker's Mark; Tina, the owner, came over to talk to me like I was a long lost friend; and last but not least, my waiter has family in the Austin Area! Highly recommended if you are planning to come to New York. Book way in advance, however.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, wonderful service, gracious hostess, well curated wine list
What a lovely place! Not the kind of place you'll see Leo or Gwyneth (thank goodness), but that's just fine. Tina will make you feel welcome and the staff will anticipate your every need. It's a relatively small room with well spaced tables. And the food - I've never had any dish that has been less than superlative - I've recently decided to go through the entire menu from top to bottom. The well curated wine list has plenty of bottles that won't break the bank. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyNope.........don't like the space
We came with friends after not having been here for 3 years. We don't like the restaurant though Tina works her tail off and is an excellent host. Noise bounces off the walls and that bothers us. I had the tart as an appetizer and the souffle as my entree. Dale had the pate then a souffle. She had one vodka on the rocks. I don't drink. Dinner cost $185 + tip.
Now I have no idea if that's the right price because they didn't have a menu. When we hadn't been given a menu and I asked, our server gave us some cock and bull story about not having the new menu back from the printer so he recited the menu and we had no idea what anything cost. One of our friends likes to read the menu to really understand it. We're too polite. Should have made a fuss.
Again, there's nothing special going on here that would bring us back. Dale says there's a musty smell that bothers her (she has COPD). Hmmmm.
Unforgettable. Inimitable.
Standards. Rules. These are things that are constantly questioned and challenged in an age where they are deemed as barriers to entry, as stodgy throwbacks to a society that operated on absolutes.
The hidden narrative however, was that those who, at least temporarily abided by rules, experienced something so unique and unforgettable, they were privy to a world where rules transformed a small piece of their world into an experience so precious, that there was no question that the ends justified the means.
For many restaurants, that rule is price. Exclusionary, impersonal and absolute. You don’t get to choose the restaurant, it chooses you. For the Simone, it is a one way phone conversation, where Tina the proprietress , affectionately and succinctly tells you to dress appropriately and obey some rules of common courtesy. No hoodies? No cell phones? Incroyable ! What kind of fascist place is this??
If I’ve piqued your interest read on.
It is fine dining at its existential best. Quiet. Intimate. A small number of tables spaced with just widely enough to mute conversation specifics, and to allow the gentle repartee of clinking China and poured libations to emphasize an experience somewhat akin to a dream. Mind you, the food hasn’t even been served.
Tina and her well trained staff guide you through the hand-written menu with just enough dexterity that you feel that the decisions you made are going to be meaningful.
Then the food arrives. And here again, one cannot feel anything except awe, because they are the recipient of the perfection yielded by hundreds of years of culinary evolution, served far away from its roots, reconstituted with the painstaking attention to detail that only a labor of true love can manifest.
It is the punchline: the missing link that frames all the rules and other details, it is truly one of those why-are-we-here moments.
The seafood soup: I actually cried when I tried it.
The duck magret: cooked to this blink-and-miss-it threshold between medium rare and medium, called rosè , that’s tender and crispy.
The chocolate moussè : creamy and rich to the point where you tease it off your palate, one lick at a time.
I ate there almost a year ago, and my only regret is not writing this review sooner.
My sincerest thanks to Tina and her husband for making this evening unforgettable.
I didn't want to tell you about this place for fear of not being able to book a table.
Small bijou on the Upper East Side. Welcoming staff. Superb food. Smart, curated wine list. We visit every time we go to the city and it never disappoints. Eschew the grandiose cathedrals and opt for this neighborhood gem.

Almost makes it–two of of three
For a restaurant to be excellent it must have the perfect combination of service + food + ambiance. The Simone has two out of three. The service, as everyone mentions, is superb, with a high ratio of employees to customers. And the owner does come and talk to diners at every table in an engaging manner. The food is also superb. Every morsel. The best duck we’ve ever had anywhere, and we’ve tried plenty. A looong wait between appetizer and entree though.
Ambiance: We were lured by the promise of no cell phones. The menu calls the restaurant a cell phone-free zone. Yet, three tables in our cone of vision used cell phones, one person kept it defiantly on the table all night, hit our vision with his screen light and even used it while the owner stood at their table! This is an incongruity and you either allow them or you don’t. Extremely disappointed. As it is a small room, sound bounces of the wallls. We also happened to coincide with a table of five extremely raucous diners and a woman with a shrill voice next to us. Not the restaurant’s fault but it could benefit from sound-muffling decor.
No intimate ambiance.
Our new special place!!
We came to The Simone to celebrate our "last date" before the arrival of our first baby and it was as special as we hoped! The service is impeccable-absolutely perfect- and the food was spectacular! It was a meal I will never forget, on so many levels.
We licked our plates for each dish: Caesar (who knew a salad could be so delightful!), Sardinian pasta, filet mignon, and salmon. We topped it off with the sundae. The food is elegant and perfectly prepared.
I am relieved that we live so close nearby so we can frequent this restaurant more!
