In SG for fun and wanted to check out an Indian cuisine spot so why not one of the oldest spots in SG at the Raffles hotel. Got reservations and a friend came along so we hit it up! Went for the prix fix meal which was reasonably priced and offered apps, mains, rice, naan, & dessert...overall great food, but really beautiful restaurant and amazing service. I counted at least 4 diff servers including a head server and a sommelier at our table. All were attentive and helpful. Food was great! Apps were all flavorful and paneer and chicken were my favorites. The mains of murgh makhani and paneer butter masala were great and offered a little kick and the daal was a but buttery but some of the best I ve had. Most definitely worth a stop for the ambiance, service and food!
Be the first to ReplyElegant dining room with great service.
The menu has interesting and unusual dishes, especially among street food and appetiser offerings, but the flavour is extremely mild, too tuned down for western palates.
Be the first to ReplyTiffin room is a classic case of style over substance.
The setting, ambience and service are excellent, as is expected of a restaurant in the iconic Raffles hotel (the birthplace of the Singapore sling). But the food sadly misses the mark. We had the "tiffin" special where the dishes are served in indian "tiffin" boxes. The food is very unremarkable, missing the typical flavors Indian food is so known for. For the prices they are charging, I would have hoped for a bolder take on flavors. It could be they are not catering to the usual Indian palate, but I find that very off putting. Why claim to be an Indian restaurant when even the simplest of Indian dishes are not authentic. So yes, if you want "toned down" Indian food in a plush ambience, go for it, but for actual Indian flavors and variety go elsewhere, both your stomach and wallet will be happier.

I did not experience some of the lackluster performance as some have stated in their reviews, the staff was extremely attentive (and it was just me, no one else at my table) helpful but not pushy. I loved the sandwiches and the pastries, I could have ate the whole display by myself. Make sure you save room for the dim sum, and the bread pudding!! Wow! Lovely experience.
Be the first to ReplyI came here on a Tuesday for Afternoon Tea.
This services offered between three and 5 o'clock. My suggestion would be to get here before 15:00 as people tend to queue fairly early. Not sure why because there is plenty of seating for all who have made proper reservations. This is a fabulous affair; one not to be missed. There is no shortage of afternoon tea offered in Singapore, however, at approximately US $55, afternoon tea at the famous raffles hotel is quintessential Singapore. I enjoyed afternoon tea on several days throughout my visit however, many places fell short. This was my absolute favorite afternoon tea experience.Once seated, you are greeted by a friendly serve her offering you an assortment of tease and coffee. They bring in assortment of pastries and savory items such as cucumber tea cakes and tartlets to your table. Then, as if this weren't enough, you are offered the opportunity to partake in the buffet which includes everything from dim sum, fruit cakes, a variety of scones, fruit and bread pudding with an absolutely wonderful vanilla sauce. I went with the English breakfast tea so strong and my cattle was never left empty. The only downside is that you are not able to take your leftovers with you. I was disturbed at this is customary in Singapore due to Government health related regulations. While understandable, it is never the less quite a bummer. I will definitely make reservations for afternoon tea in the Tiffin room again.

I really want to love this place, we were excited and reserved a week prior our arrival to singapore, tucked lovely inside iconic Raffle hotel, crispy white decor, tall ceilings w lot of natural lights, but overall experience had been mediocre, it felt more of a tourist trap than a place that we can really enjoy the tea w dessert pairings! There was dimsum when we visited, kinda weird combination, none of the dimsums stand out anyways, the waiter and bus boys were friendly, but at the same time they were tense covering numerous tables and trying to please and help w photo taking for each tables to please their customers, or at least they tried. What really turned me off was the quality of tea and pastries, the selection of green teas were limited, black tea was subpar in quality, macaroons were not part of the pastries, ย I felt like for the amount we were paying per person, at least we deserve some quality tea and pastries.

We made reservations weeks in advanced for high tea only to have to wait in line for 30 min. Since men must wear long pants and that time of day puts the line in the sun this is just abuse of patrons. Why make reservation and wait 30 mins?

Afternoon tea was such a disappointment, Raffles and the Tiffin Room are definitely resting on their laurels here. A plate of sandwiches made from slightly stale store-bought loaves doesn't cut the mustard in this foodie capital. Cucumber sandwiches, while traditional, are quite uninspiring, not to mention the tuna mayo and egg mayo sandwiches that accompanied. The dim sum selection was equally uninspiring. The sweet selection wasn't great either. As it is nearly Christmas there were mini mince pies; I've had better store bought ones and a vague approximation of Christmas pudding which was pretty horrible. The only thing I ate which was really nice was the curry puff. There was also a choir singing Christmas carols. They had lovely voices but were so loud that it was impossible to carry on a conversation, for the ENTIRE tea service. Of course many people go to tea at Raffles simply for the atmosphere and experience but that doesn't mean the food needs to be poor at best. I've had Sunday brunch at Raffles and it was excellent so it's not as if it's a hotel-wide problem. My advice would be to give it a miss and check out one of the other excellent teas on offer in the city.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time to the tiffin room for their Indian buffet lunch.
It's $68++ and honestly I didn't think it was worth it. The food was tasty but very much toned down to suit western palates. The spread was not particularly varied though there's still sufficient representation for each section (salads, appetizers, hot, desserts). There was a section for non Indian food lovers, smoked salmon, cheeses etc. What's unique? During this Christmas season, there was special honey baked ham and turkey carving stations and log cakes as well.Other positive points: Fresh garlic and butter naan were served freshly baked to the table automatically. They were served with a minced lamb dip. ย The waiter also comes along twice with daily specials. One was like a pulled lamb and the other was baked mushrooms with cheese. The mushrooms were the bomb!Lastly, the raisin cardamom kulfi was the bomb! A little too sweet but the flavor was to die for!

I was really hoping for just a bit more from high tea at the Raffles but still, all in all, a good experience. The ambience is very pleasant. When we were there a harpsichordist was playing. The decor is, as expected, elegant and classic. The food in general was very good and some of the desserts were exceptional. My disappointment came from the fact that, 1, the tea selection was a bit sparse and was just a tea bag in a tea pot, and, 2, food service was via a buffet. Couldn't they simply serve everything to the table and remove the Vegas-hotel vibe I get from a buffet? Final cost is about $70 pp, so not a must do but a nice one off experience.

We decided that the best way to try the Tiffin Room would be a high tea, which I must say was very well done and included a couple of things to set it apart from the crowd. The staff were perhaps somewhat surprisingly very friendly, not stuffy, we saw them taking photos for groups and even allowing people to chose when they were served, so full marks here. The food was enjoyable, and the inclusion of a buffet of Asian dumplings and extra sweets was nice; though I was a little disappointed that some of the sweets appeared in both the served tray and buffet... A minor issue really. As a once off experience when visiting Singapore I would recommend this, though there was nothing that would excite me to repeat my dining experience from the high tea perspective.
