You'll be able to enjoy this better when you don't think of this as a traditional dim sum place. They have a super small menu. The standouts include the BBQ pork buns, the sticky rice in lotus leaf, the turnip cake and, to our group's surprise, the steamed egg cake. We also liked their bean curd rolls and green tea sesame balls, but not so much the more traditional dim sum dishes, such as har gow, siu mai, and the various rice rolls -- we knew people don't think highly of those at this place, but still had to find out for ourselves.
Be the first to ReplyI was here when it first opened.
Everything was above standard, shy of exceptional. Sadly, this is no longer the case. I had spare ribs, chicken feet, bean curd stuffing, shrimp steam roll, and coconut cream with taro. Overall, I have to say it's pretty underwhelming. I could have the dim sums elsewhere with better quality. Gone was past excellence, once a prestigious restaurant now a run of mill franchise brand.
Be the first to ReplyWe had such a great late lunch at dim sum.
Their hot tea was outstanding.Spare ribs was solid! Delish.Their chicken pot stickers seriously hit it out of the park! We got two orders.Shrimp and chive dumplings were good. Sui mai was tasty.Mushroom dumpling was yum.The rice roll was great too.Pan fried noodles were kinda dry but super tasty, great texture. We also had some kind of taro coconut tapioca warm dessert. It was so awesome. Not sure why the location in SoCal (Irvine, CA is so bad). This is a mystery of life.I would want to return to NYC just to eat here!

Second time at Tim Ho Wan in NYC and it satisfied all the dumpling cravings. We loved getting the Siu Mai and Rice Rolls again, hence the already-eaten pieces in the photos. The place was packed but had no line on a Thursday evening. We put ourselves on the Yelp Waitlist on our way over, but were already first within 5 minutes.

Super authentic, great service, just a great place! They bring your dish as soon as it is ready so they might be staggered a little. My friend and I went, we kept wanting to try different dishes we practically has constant food being placed and taken off the table. Definitely a must try!
Be the first to ReplyThe buns are what dreams are made of.
Worth the wait for a table! Service is fast and the milk tea coffee is a delight

It is simply beyond comprehension that this place does not have 5 stars. There are so many things this place does right. As a favor to humanity, I'll list them.1- non-alcoholic drinks2- a wide variety of dishes in small sizes so you can taste many different things3- amazing rice noodles4- a menu you just check off what you want with a pencil, eliminating the need to talk to annoying humans or wait for your dining companion to spit out their order after you've been waiting 45 minutes5- Cleanliness6- Perfectly professional and kind waitstaff7- causal, no frill decor that doesn't try to distract you from the food8- an excellent location in the city for entertaining out of town guests9- usually a short wait because it's good, popular place but not so long a wait you start looking at your friends wondering how well they'd pair with soy sauce10- clean bathroomNeed I go on?

Let's start from the beginning. Upon entry, we were seated right away - a group of 3. That was good. Checked off the pink slip boxes of food. Things came to the table one by one. Pork buns - as expected sweet and crispy. Excellent Congee - first time trying authentic congee. AmazingRice rolls - not enough filling. Alright Chicken ginger - punches you with ginger Steamed beef meatballs with tofu skin - uhmmmmm why was it jelly like and really pinkDessert - the flower jelly - tasted like sugar jellyCalled for refill of water twice. Never got it. I've waited so long to try this place ever since I saw the youtube with Fung bros filming interviews here with Ronny Cheing, the cast of Crazy Rich Asians, even Hot Ones ate here. Sadly I expected too much. It's a standard dimsum place. Wouldn't come back.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was fantastic.
With one vegetarian in our group they really made it easy to identify options and announce them as each item was brought over. We usually don't go for desserts at Asian places but we tried some of the offerings (Green Tea Sesame Balls) and loved them! I didn't love the BBQ pork buns but the Steamed Dumplings were excellent.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service.
Dumplings and spring rolls were ok. Fortunately there was no waiting for our group of 3, and the staff was very patient with us as we did end up being seated for quite a long time with light meals. Jelly dessert was meh...

I've been to this chain while in Taiwan, but have never visited this location in New York. The bbq pork buns are the classic popular item here and they did not disappoint. They are so fluffy and flake and the pork is flavorful and tasty, you can't go wrong! The dim sum menu is quite small compared to the usual dim sum cart experience, which can be seen as a negative, but still many delicious choices. The only other dim sum dish that stood out was the luo bo gao! It is a perfect dish that went well with the savory sauce. All the other dim sum was good as well. Nothing too special. It's definitely a little more expensive for what you get, but always enjoy eating dim sum and will be back!

When my colleague mentioned must try porc buns, I thought, let's do this! At first, they look simple and basic but after that first bite into the fresh, sweet dough and delicious filling, one bun is not enough! One order includes 3 buns.

Dimsum was not authentic (saying this as a born-and-raised Hong Konger) and wait was far too long for the sub-par food.

Have heard about this place for years and finally got a chance to try it. Lives up to the hype imo. I grew up eating dim sum and I can see why this place earns a michelin star. The dumpling skins are chewy, stretchy and fresh. The meat melts in your mouth - and I mean everything, not just the dumplings, but the sticky rice and rice crepes included. Loved the beef one as it was full of beef in the center, well-seasoned and not too salty, and so so tender. The shrimp crepe/rice roll? Forget about it! I've never had shrimp just melt in my mouth like that in a shrimp crepe before. The pork one I liked less, but it did have more veggies in it which I appreciate. The pork buns - pork was tender, juicy, and the sauce definitely stood out from other chasiu bao I've had. The bun itself was crisp, light and delicate - mildly sweet to accompany that savory pork inside. It's more expensive than your typical dim sum, I'm used to ~$4 a dish, but even at these prices this shouldn't hurt your wallet too much.
Be the first to ReplyGreat quality menu items.
Quick and efficient service. Super busy but grateful for the advanced wait list.
Be the first to ReplyDon't go to dim sum outside of chinatown.
..This was the most average/mediocre dim sum I've ever had.1. Menu was ridiculously limited for dim sum. When we went there wasn't even a single steamed rice roll option which is a dim sum staple. 2. Dishes were very average, flavors were not bad, but not really worth it. Portions small (not atypical for dim sum though) but prices were on the higher end for dim sum. I forgot how much I paid for the lettuce dish but whatever it was, it was definitely not worth it. Best dishes:Steamed Rice with Pork Spare Rib and Chicken Feet: the pork spare rib had an amazing sauce that was delicious with the rice, the bonus chicken foot is a nice dim sum touch! Eggplant shrimp: probably cost more than I would really justify but at least it tasted somewhat above average. Verdict: if you're going to get dim sum in East village, just walk 15-20 minutes or take the train to Chiantown instead for a significantly better dim sum experience.
Be the first to ReplyService is still subpar.
I ordered 2 items. I started eating when the first dish arrived. The second dish never came when I finished the first. I asked a different staff Anne he first told me it takes time to prepare the siu mai as I just ordered it. I told him I ordered the two dishes together when I arrived. He checked and told me the female staff who took my order never put in there siu mai order. So I had to waited. It's always something with this place.Got my bill and saw I got the same server as last time - Tashi - who put in my order. I thought she looked familiar.

Eating dim sum for dinner was a novel ide since I usually associate dim sum with the late morning/early afternoon hours. Thankfully places like Tim ho wan allows for satisfying dim sum cravings when they hit at a random hour. I came with a group of two other people and got a total of five dishes. This was a different experience than having Chinatown dim sum since you order off a menu and the dishes are brought out, rather than having staff push around carts of steamed goodies and serving tea with the food. The menu had lots of pictures, which made choosing easy. I do have to say that I was taken aback by the limited selection of food. For example, there wasn't as many types of dumplings that you would generally find. In any case, the menu does hit on the key staples of dim sum in my opinion. All the dishes served were piping hot, which totally hit the spot when it's cold outside. My favorite was probably the fried eggplant with shrimp. The pan fried noodles were a bit bland but I guess a good balance to everything else that was a little more salty. Overall, this was good for eating dim sum if you want it at an unconventional hour.

I was excited to try Tim Ho Wan since the HK location has a Michelin star, but it's overrated and there are better dim sum options in Chinatown. Their dim sum offering was quite limited (Ex: no taro cakes, no egg tarts, and only one type of congee) and the flavor was nothing special. The only good things about Tim Ho Wan are the ambiance and service, but for the long wait and the hype, I think it fell short.
