Interesting Take on Hawaiian Cuisine in the Financial District/Embarcadero
Interesting Take on Hawaiian Cuisine in the Financial District/Embarcadero
We love Hawaiian Cuisine, or to be more specific, “New Hawaiian Cuisine,” as espoused by a loosely knit group of chefs, including Alan Wong, Sam Choy, Peter Merriman, and others, formed in the 1970's to further, refine and redefine Hawaiian Cuisine. They drew upon their roots, and histories, to take dining in Hawaii beyond the smorgasbords, that had basically taken over the Islands. They took things to a whole new level, but based on history. We are also fans of Chef Michael Mina, and have dined at many of his restaurants, and attended seminars with him, and his teams. When I read of chefs Michelle Karr-Ueoka and Wade Ueoka of Honolulu, joining forces with Chef Mina, and opening an Hawaiian-themed restaurant in San Francisco, I knew that I had to dine there. The menu, that I saw, indicated a take on that New Hawaiian Cuisine.
In October, while in San Francisco for my wife’s business meetings, I had my chance, but unfortunately, the only night with availability, was one, when she had a dinner meeting - I was going solo.
The restaurant is in the lobby of SalesForce East Tower at 350 Mission St, is interesting, to say the least. The entrance is through the Mission St side of the building, and the left corner is the restaurant with a bar, and sitting area. Then, up on the Mezzanine, is a bit more formal dining area, and another bar. I cannot say if the menus are the same upstairs and down, but the lower level areas look to be more casual, and an after-work meeting place, more focused on the bar, but I could be wrong.
The most striking aspect, as I entered, was the number of photographs of Hawaii, and especially waterfalls. Then, there was an odd “play area,” with cartoonish characters, mostly not Hawaiian in appearance, or dress. Once past that, the soaring lobby, frames the two bar/dining areas, in an interesting way - but then the color scheme of Trailblazer Tavern seems a bit garish - almost a caricature of Hawaii. Let’s just say that I am not a fan of what the designers did, but also, I am likely well beyond the target demographic, which has to focus a bit on the employees of Sales Force, and those working in this area of Mission St. That is probably why I just did not get it.
I spoke to the bartender in the lower area, who kindly directed me to the elevator, up to the Mezzanine, where I was greeted by a hostess, who directed me to a banquette booth, looking back to that dining room, and the bar. A little confusing, but everyone was friendly, and I felt that they had directed many lost souls before.
I quickly had the wine list, and the menu. One thing that I can always be assured of, is that if it’s a Michael Mina restaurant, there will be good wines. His corporate Sommelier, Raj Parr always does a great job. Though short, I was correct - some interesting wines, and even in the B-T-G selection.
I had a glass of the Domaine Chavy-Chouet Les Petits Aligoté (a white grape of Burgundy, though one not often seen outside of Burgundy), while looking over the menu. Like the wine list, the menu is fairly simple, and though tempted to go with the Chef’s Taste of Hawaii, I decided to be eclectic, and mix and match from the á la carte menu.
I started with the Ahi Poke Nachos. This dish was good, but not the best Poke I have had - even in San Francisco, let alone Hawaii. Good start, but not a great one so far.
Along beside it, I added the North Shore-style Kaua`I Shrimp - a nice dish, and I liked it better, than the Poke. The Shrimp were succulent, with a crispy coating.
I added some more wines: Domaine Du Carrou Sancerre, Sandi Santa Barbara Chardonnay and Pence, Pence Ranch, Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir.
For a Main Course, I went with the Grilled Octopus w/ Togarashi-spiced potatoes, scallion and miso aioli - this was a very good choice, and the Octopus had nice grilling, and a bit of smoke. Well done!
My service was a bit spotty, with one server seeming totally disinterested, and absent most of the meal. However, after I flagged down, a young lady, who I think was a manager, I was assigned a different server, and she was excellent - so 50:50 on the service, with the negative corrected quickly.
I did notice that behind this main dining room, there appeared to be a separate space, and it seemed that there was a group dinner there, as folk kept filing in. I glimpsed the space briefly, but with the group, did not pick up many details, other than to say that there is a semi-private dining area.
The lighting was good, and the table spacing, in my area, was good, as well. Even though my table was near the bar, the noise-level was only moderate, and likely due to the soaring ceiling. The area of the bar, closest to me, was also the service end, with patrons seated a bit away from me. Other than the hustle and bustle of the staff, they were very quiet. There was also, what appeared to be al fresco dining, on a patio, but it was quite full, on this October evening. Upon leaving, that lower bar/dining area did seem louder.
In all, a good meal, albeit not a great one. I will bring my wife back to dine here, but we will likely not be in a rush to do so.
Not Up To Expectation
We were attracted to the restaurant based on the reputation of Michael Mina, the chef. The restaurant was very nice, but the food was just average. The eggplant side dish was overcooked. The appetizers were bland. The main dishes were good, but not great. The wine prices were high.

This restaurant is in an office building (Salesforce) and thought it would be another office building restaurant.
To my surprise, the food was pretty good. Fresh, prepared well and tasty. Hawaiin cuisine.
Would definitely return.
Hawaiian dinner
We were in the mood for Hawaiian food for dinner and were to get a reservation at Trailblazer Tavern. We had the spam musubi, seafood arancini and the lobster and scallop combo. We loved the arancini and the spam musubi! The only negative thing I can say about the lobster and scallop combo is that there wasn’t much of the meat. It’s all lobster shell and that was an entree. I loved my mustachioed sour- it had Magnum PI on top of the egg whites. Pretty cool. I highly recommend the place . It’ll be fun to bring friends for some cocktails after work. They ran out of the donuts for dessert but gave us a complimentary coconut pineapple cake. It was so good. Not what I expected . So many flavors.

Went to Trailblazer to see the new Workforce Tower complex up close and because we heard friends raving about the restaurant. If you like high-rises, and having build several when I was younger, I do, the building is worth seeing. However, despite the Micheal Mina connection, the food is very average by San Francisco standards. We were there for lunch. My two companions had the Wiki Wiki selection, three courses for $35, and they were not happy with their choices. The main, a Kauai shrimp dish, was just so so they said. A stater, pupus in Hawaiian cuisine, was a disaster. It was spam based, sweet and inedible per my friend. They did really like the strawberry shaved ice desert. I had the catch of the day sandwich with spicy garlic fries. The sandwich was fine, and although the fries were neither very galicy or spicy, were ok too, just not special. At $16, these were priced as you would expect in the financial district. Service was good.

Wonderful lunch
I hosted 6 people for lunch at the Trailblazer Tavern. The space and restaurant is hip and has a Hawaiian theme. You feel a bit like you are in Disneyland I might add. It has a bit of a forced Hawaiian feel. The dining room is upstairs from the Salesforce Tower lobby, is open to the lobby and has very high ceiling. This is not a restaurant for anyone who has trouble hearing because the acoustics are terrible. The food was delicious although a bit pricey. The dishes were creative and unique. I recommend this place for lunch although not for an important business meeting due to the acoustics. Service was excellent. I recommend a reservation for lunch. At 11:45am they were not busy but by the time we finished eating at 12:30 there were no empty tables.

Decided to try this Mina restaurant before going to the Chase Center for Metallica and gad we did. Great service, great food, and great experience. Jerry and his staff made for a fantastic evening

I’m biased because I’m a salesforce fan, but I genuinely love this place. It’s expensive but I loved the food and cocktails and the staff are as nice as the people working for salesforce itself. I’ll be back in November!

Food was creative and well presented. Staff was not very engaging with thoughts on ordering for a group or clear on how food would come out —- a clear opinion or options on how best to order for a group would be good (tapas vs entree style). Fun atmosphere but for visitors a bit tricky to find within the office building.
