Amazing entrance and delicious food
The food here was a exquisite. All dishes were worth it. My favourite was of course the Wagyu and the dessert. An impressive dish was also the Tuna…they had 3 different parts of the tuna, which was interesting to taste the different textures. I would say the toilets need a bit of work though…especially as this is a michellin star restaurant. But other than that the service was top tier and the entrance to the restaurant was like no other, truly inventive.

Me and my husband went there for dinner… the manager pushed us to order more food because he said was not enough, we spent 500£ For just two people and right after the dinner we felt sick from something that was not good. Definitely not recommended!!!!
Be the first to ReplyBy far the best japanese in London
Most people who don't give this restaurant 5 stars is because of the price. Why should the price matter though when you are literally getting the best of the best? Umu uses techniques and ingredients which are as good as the best restaurants in Tokyo and it is a real foodie's paradise. Highly recommended for those who appreciate only the best.
Be the first to ReplyGood but very pricey
I enjoyed Umu. My experience of Sushi to date has been primarily high street chains so I was keen to see and taste what difference a top notch Sushi restaurant could make. I wasn’t disappointed. The food is of the highest quality and immaculately presented. The restaurant itself is quiet and quite intimate and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Two reasons for not giving it 5 stars though. One was the building work going on next door which made it impossible to hear each other. To their credit they did go and have a word and it stopped after 10 minutes. The bigger issue though was the price. We did have the taster menu and the wine flight but the total bill was £2200 for 4 of us. Good though the food was, I don’t feel the price was justified.

What a beautiful experience in London - akin to being in Tokyo. Great food- incredible ingredients that are treated perfectly. I cannot think of one dud dish- across the board spectacular from the fish to the melt in the mouth beef. Can’t wait to return.

Decidedly average Japanese restaurant. We went for its Michelin star. But whilst the fish was undoubtedly fresh, it was very bland. Even the chef creation sushi lacked interest

My husband and I travel to have superb food experiences. We have had them all over the world and in London, where we travel to frequently, we have has some wonderful dinners, Core and Frenchie's to name just two. We were anticipating Umu when we dined there in December. We expected to pay about $800 for dinner and drinks so the expense was not a surprise. The staff were wonderful and very attentive. Unfortunately, the food was ordinary and uninspired. We had the tasting menu and were very disappointed. The Kaiseke menu featured 8 courses and not one was memorable. This was supposed to be an outstanding meal, not like a thousand other Japanese places. For inspired Japanese food, we found Yashim Ocean House to be superior in every way and at one-quarter of the price.
Be the first to ReplyAverage food laughably priced
I just don’t know what to say really. The food was distinctly average and the prices were just a joke - £17 for 1 piece of sashimi / sushi?! Really? £60 lobster tempura was 6 tiny pieces of nothing special. The service was very good however, as good as it gets, and a nice room. But with a total bill over £600 for 2 people it was simply nowhere near worth it. I will not be returning.

Excellent Japanese restaurant. Delicious dishes. A must to visit in the heart of Mayfair. We arrived late to have dinner and the atmosphere was a bit quiet. It would be great to listen music as it is a bit boring so it is not comparable the bustling Hakkasan on Saturday night.

Absolutely stand out. Effortless service, comforting ambiance and the most exceptional food. Could not recommend highly enough. Will be back, with bells on. Don’t miss the Wagu beef!

We were booked in here on the 29th October 2020 but one of us developed COVID19 and was sick for about one month. We sadly had to cancel. I made it imperative that the restaurant would not lose out so I booked as soon as I was able. We were not disappointed.
The staff are attentive without being over-fussy and the sommelier was very helpful in managing our needs. We’re not over-familiar with Japanese food so the Kaiseki menu was perfect as a guide to what we could expect.
The quality of the produce was superlative and the dishes presented allowed the produce to speak for itself. There’s no place to hide with such presentation and this was exceptional.
I’ve had wagyu before but never been particularly impressed but the quality here was grade 11 and was simply sublime. I was in awe of how good it was. The sushi was amazing and super-fresh. The only thing that I was not entirely convinced of was the otoro tuna but that might be a cultural issue on my part. The tuna tartare with shiso leaf was incredible.
We now understand that we have been spoilt and nothing else can match this short of visiting Tokyo. We shall likely return.
You get what you pay for !
Okay let’s get something very straight here right now. This is a Michelin star plus restaurant that means it’s all about quality over quantity. The food is exquisite the drinks are exquisite the customer service best in the world however this all comes A price and yes the price is very high two adults to children my bill came to over £650. But that was with a lot of saki and yes the saki is paid very well with each dish thank you Mr Pepe for arranging this for us shout out to you. Also someone who deserves a shout out is Addison he did a profoundly impressive job in explaining the menu in detail even when the dishes arrived which ones we should eat first and which ones thereafter. All in all a restaurant I will visit again for sure but only if I’m going if I’m paying the full bill because I’m sure I have some friends that may not want to pay the prices.

Have been a few times to this place and it never disappoints. Everything is perfection.
Today for the first time I tried the Kaiseki menu and I don’t have words to describe the goodness I’ve experienced. One dish after the other simply full of different flavours and emotions.
Cannot wait to go back.
Delicate Japanese cooking - but very pricey!
The Umu dining room itself is beautiful and stylish. The food itself is delicate and the flavours are simple and pure. Clearly a huge amount of effort goes into the preparation and the presentation (including the owner crafting his own dining-ware from clay). Word of warning though, it is very expensive.
Be the first to ReplyCynically overpriced - not worth it!
Umu was a great disappointment. It's a lovely room but the food is serious overpriced given that it's distinctly average. We had two great sushi nigiri but the sashimi was unremarkable and badly cut and the lobster tempura batter was claggy.
There are really great Japanese restaurants in London - this isn't one of them
