Why haven't I discovered this sooner? Food is delicious and they have a wide selection of food to choose from as well as desserts! Family friendly with an open cafeteria style seating area. Vik's Chaat also has a market you can check out with a wide selection of Indian groceries/ingredients. Service is quick and friendly especially with the high volume of folks that come by. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWhen you say an institution, you should mean it.
Vik's is an institution and I do mean it. Indian dishes and sweets in the back (big portions cheap prices). You can't go wrong and you should swing by when you're nearby...every time. There's a supermarket in the front in case you have skills to try any of this at home.
Be the first to ReplyVik's Chaat in Berkeley, CA is a decent Indian restaurant
Vik's Chaat in Berkeley, CA is a decent Indian restaurant that offers a variety of chaat foods, South and North Indian dishes, as well as desserts and Indian sweets. The location is great, particularly for students and singles, as it's situated close to universities in Berkeley. However, while the food is satisfactory, the taste is nothing exceptional. Additionally, the prices are moderately high, which may be a turn-off for some diners. The restaurant is somewhat overrated, given its popularity in the area.Despite this, Vik's Chaat remains a go-to spot for those seeking Indian food in Berkeley. If you're in the area and craving some chaat or Indian sweets, it's worth checking out. However, don't expect to be blown away by the taste or the value for money.
Be the first to ReplyTasty indian food!!! Huge sitting place.
Kids loved the tandoori chicken thali. That thali came with bondi raita which was just too good.Chole bhature were amazing. Bhatura was very soft and huge.Pav bhaji was also nice.Overall, very nice street style indian food place. Highly recommend this place. Will surely visit again. They also have a Indian grocery section, but expensive compared to many south bay stores.

The food is okayish and their vada pao vada smell raw uncooked spices. They need to serve quality food, they have been serving food since forever. Need to think before spending money here now

Great food at high prices! Always been tasty and used to be a good deal. I used to eat there once or twice a week but can't afford it so much anymore. I love their food! I wish they didn't love my pocketbook so much.

One of the best places to get chaat but I suggest you stay away from meat. My nephew, son, and I ate lamb baida roti there on Sunday and all 3 of us got the worst food poisoning ever! 2 days later, all 3 of us are still sick in bed. Maybe they can improve on meat storage and prep. I have heard from other friends too of them getting sick ;(
Be the first to ReplyA friend of mine has never eaten at this Berkeley legend
A friend of mine has never eaten at this Berkeley legend before so I decided to show her this place. This is one off the best chaats I have had close to sf.Chile bhatura- can't go wrong with this. Best softest bread with perfect Chole. She said it reminded her of Delhi. Must order this dish here 10/10Masala dosa- this is usually really good here, it wasn't as great this time around. It comes with all the traditional sides but it wasn't as crisp. I would say 7/10Papdi chaat- really great with a lot of flavor/ there is fresh cumin and yogurt added to it. I would rate this 9/10 and recommend the Dahi Barbara puri instead so you can pick and eat each of the crackers and get full flavor. There is a lot of yougurt here so this dish is filling and healthy Pani puri- this was great and not too spicy which I like. If you don't have a large group, pick the dahi batata puri over this - 7/10Desert- get their chum chum they are greatSummary - odahi batata puri and chole bhatura are excellent here.Service is counter order so fast!Ambience is food court style eating. Price- 15 average for an entree, hardly your sf prices.
Be the first to ReplyPricy shit and ok food.
Dublin and south bay restaurants r way cheaper and good is tasty
Be the first to ReplyCool place.
Half market half restaurant, with a ton of packages and fresh options. The lamb baida was solid.
Be the first to ReplyNice tables to sit outside and a market to shop in too.
My co-worker from India says it's their go to when they miss home cooked meals.
Be the first to ReplyLove the basa fish plate.
So good. Will go again? Yes of course. Why 3 stars? Well the interiors thing. That. But the food hand selected by our friend are pretty good. Yum.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced for the quality.
Much better quality at 1/2 the cost Indian food is easily available in South Bay

Tasty Chhole BhatureDavi batata puri was decent, but not the best.Veg thali is simple and delicious, home-style
Be the first to ReplyViks is an iconic chaat warehouse/restaurant.
Many years ago I ate here twice/monthly. I visited after 2 years and meh. I ordered Samosa Cholle plate. The samosas tasted old and the Cholle were so watery. There was barely any flavor. Indian food without flavor what a connundrum.

I'm always gonna recommend this place no matter what but just know it's not your typical indian restaurant. They do have curries and plates, all the reviews that say they don't didn't read the menu so don't listen to that. But also, if you're coming here and aren't used to this type of food it's a great opportunity to try something new. There isn't a single thing I've had and thought it was bad but of course i do have recommendations. Dosa - amazing and everyone gets it . not my first choice but it's solid and everyone should try it .Batata Puri - little bites of gold . i get these as a share plate bc they can be very filling .Cholle Bhature - big puffy bread served with chickpeas and a delicious mint sauce . i usually get this for my picky eaters and i've never had a problem there .Kathi Kebab - my family calls this "the burrito" , probably the best thing you can order but it's a weekend special . 10/10 The only thing is that the food is pretty pricy but I consider eating here a treat so that isn't something to think about too much.
Be the first to ReplyNone of the chats had any zing factors.
No idea which palate they are catering to. Everything is way costly on the grocery side. The chutneys are . Do not recommend this place for chat lovers from the northern half of India.
Be the first to ReplyVery large servings and delicious food.
Flavor a bit too strong for non-Indian me. I ordered the Chaat.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, casual/communal ambience.
Came by on a Sunday evening at 6pm and there was a line out the door! It moved quickly, and we ordered an assortment of mains, sides and desserts to share. The standout favorite was the vegetable dosa with the aloo tiki a close follow up. The bhel puri was not my favorite, the crispy texture made it feel like spiced Chex mix to me. The dahi batata puri was good, but I wouldn't repeat it as it was too sweet for me (potato stuffed fried dough in a sweet and spicy/cream sauce). The dessert (a sweet and creamy cheese) tasted like sweet and creamy styrofoam, and I would order differently next time.I was eyeing others orders while we ate, and am very curious to try the cholle bhature (ie. The big puffy thing on the menu)!Overall, so happy I finally tried this place and am already planning my next order!
Be the first to ReplyI was recently at Viks chat and this place has deteriorated
I was recently at Viks chat and this place has deteriorated on many front and the character of the management is unethical and racist. The food quality has become sub standard. They are selling food that caused food poisoning and when we reported that the management has no sense of accountability. We urge our ethical and liberal Berkeley residents to fight against racism and quality of food and not allow business like this exist. This is not our city and this is not who we are as Californians.

Disclaimer: When I review restaurants I only review the taste of the food. Good/bad service, decor, or ambiance may be referenced but do not factor into the review unless it effects the experience of the food itself.Vik's food is always excellent, and a perfect place to take your vegetarian friends. The tastes are unique, authentic, and really good southern Indian food. If you are looking for a rich curry you have come to the wrong place. Most of the food plays with slight sweet, bitter/sour, light/fresh, slight spice, and umami. There really isn't a bad item on the menu from Dosas, to papdi chaat, to the samosas. While I don't come here often when I crave it I have to have it. There really isn't many places that do it right and Vik's delivers.I generally go in the off hours due to the fact that while it was a once hidden gem now turned huge staple of Berkeley, and trying to go on your lunch hour means you will be eating it in your office. Well worth trying it though.

I came here because I was looking for the best Indian food in Berkeley and this was the most recommended one. The food and the service were great!

First visit during covid, first time trying chaat on my trip to SF. We ordered a variety:Cholle Bhature wasn't as puffy as seen in pics due to takeout packaging. Chewy and yummy. Everything was fresh, flavorful and yummy. Rose Lassi was good too. Didn't have as strong taste of rose that reminds of fragrance/soap.I do agree that things seemed a bit pricy, especially for bus yourself setting... but good to try. Per website, they source their ingredients consciously and separate vegetarian dishes from non-veg. I'd imagine lot of the increased cost reflects inflation and possibly the packaging for everything as a takeout order. Not sure if you can ask otherwise, but I wasn't given an option at the register. I highly recommend CHECKOUT THEIR WEBSITE/MENU before going. Daily menu rotates and have separate weekend menu. It was odd that they did not have the prices on the menu online or even at the restaurant door. They had them on the chalkboard inside but it was difficult to match the pictures and names on the board. LINE GETS LONG and despite spacious parking lot, you may have to find street parking. Indoor/outdoor covered seats were available. Reason for 4 stars: it was good but personally I won't go out of my way to revisit for anything specifically that hits the spot. Fyi, I am not Indian or super familiar with various types of Indian cuisine. This is rather minor and personal: I also didn't like how things were packaged separately even for dining in. Felt so wasteful.
Be the first to ReplyI've been here three times.
The first time was great because it wasn't too busy and we were able to dine in. The second time it was take out only and it is not fun to eat Vik's Chaat in take out form. There are too many little containers and packaging which is not ecofriendly but also just not fun. I prefer to have it on their trays where everything is in one place. The third time I went it was a full mad house. It took almost 40 minutes to wait in line and then receive our food. If you are planning on coming here for a quick lunch break make sure you pre-order to avoid the long wait. I love their mango lassi but at $7 each I think its way too overpriced. They also don't have ice in the entire restaurant and the mango lassi was very warm. It was almost $70 for a lunch for two.
Be the first to ReplyWaited really longggg for the food.
We ordered dahi puri (it was just chole and potatoes with dahi and imli sauce) no sev, no onion, no spices. We also tried another chat dish which was same but just with flat puris. The aloo tiki was delicious but on top if it was the same chole and dahi combo. All tasted the same and nothing like what chaat tastes like in india. Rose lassi was decent. For all the wait and below average taste, highly overpriced!
