Best Japanese in the Bay Area
Village Sake is such a treat. This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area. We visit Village Sake at least once a month. Make sure to line up at least an hour before they open to get a coveted table at this incredible restaurant. Iโve had everything on the menu and I can assure you that everything is incredibly fresh and delicious. The Hamachi Tataki is a must as is the Miso Black Cod, Pork Belly Skewers, Scallop and Chive Dumplings, and make sure to save room for the dreamy Village Donuts with a Salted Miso Caramel dipping sauce. Service is casual and unobtrusive.

I eat at a lot of fine restaurants but I'm not an expert on Japanese food so perhaps I just didn't understand the food. The quality was good but despite trying the more unique dishes, the food didn't seem that innovative. And portions were quite small.

The place is bustling and the kitchen smoky with flames squirting into the air as every order is prepared fresh and brought straight to your table. The standards are there; hamachi collars, sushi and rolls, all great, but the other unusual dishes may be new to you unless you have wandered the highlands of Japan; smoky kimchi brussel sprouts, okonomiyaki, grilled squid, corn fritters, luscious scallop dumplings, burdock root tempura, That's just what we had last night! There is much more. A variety of well-curated sakes are available, as you might expect from the name. Everything is fresh, beautifully cooked and served with the right sauce, so tasty I usually drink it after dipping. Our waiter, a local Fairfax man, said that it was a privilege to serve at Village Sake. It's a privilege to eat there.

Our friends suggested dinner at Village Sake, and it was very good. The staff is very friendly and professional. The fish is very fresh. We ordered a variety of food to share, and it was all good. I enjoyed my Hamachi Kama, Sunomono Salad, and my Umi Masu-Ocean Trout, aka Salmon and Zune Sake-Cured Salmon Sashimi.
Our waitress Nichole recommend the Wagyu Beef Tataki, and my husband and friends really enjoyed it, along with our other selections.
If you love doughnut holes, then you will love the Village doughnut hole dessert! Doughnut Holes are rolled in a Cinnamon-Sugar, with a miso caramel and chocolate dipping sauces.
Be aware of two things;
1) The Restaurant Takes NO RESERVATIONS. Go on the website, or call to be put on the wait list. It is a small space, so the wait can be long.
2) There is no Visible Restaurant Name on the building. Only Japanese Letters. The Restaurant is literally across the street from Naves Bar which is on the right side of the street. The Restaurant is a mustard, yellowish color, with about Three Tables Outside.
If you go, I hope you enjoy it, as we did.
Innovative and fresh
Weโre consistently dazzled every time we dine here. The lack of reservation system can be challenging but we (and many others) are willing to overlook the hassle for the incredible food and excellent service.

A must get to spot. Everything is spot on - every week! Specials are also wonderful. Great staff, amazing fresh, innovative and delectable menu + wonderful saki.
Have the donuts for dessert and order the tempura sting beans or bust.
A great spot. Consistent. Wonderful. Kids are there frequently - make use of the Waitlist option at 5pm.
Excellent Sushi/Japanese restaurant
This was our third visit since it opened and the restaurant is going from strength to strength. The fish is extremely fresh (I had hamachi, trout and mackerel sashimi) and the portions very generous. Top quality wasabi. Asparagus, soft shell crab roll both delicious. Wide range of sakes.
The service, which used to be haphazard and inattentive, is now superb
Great to have such a top notch restaurant in Fairfax
Wonderful, fresh
There is almost always a wait here - and for good reason.
The fish is fresh and delicious. The specials are always interesting and worth a try. And the sake selection is fabulous. Ask the server for a recommendation, or pick anything off the list.
Reservation at 7 not seated until 8
We made reservations at 7. When we got there they told us to come back at 7:30. When we can back they told us 8:00.
The food was OK but nothing compared to the reviews and certainly not worth the wait.
We could of gone into San Francisco instead and eaten at a number of places with better food and service.
Very disappointing.
At Last Fairfax Goes a Bit Upscale for Food
This new place replaces an old dive Chinese restaurant. It is quite small with four booths, five tables and a bar that seats seven. There are three tables out front. Since there are no reservations, one must be in line before 5PM when they open. Otherwise your name goes on a waiting list. It is very casual and noisy, but the staff are excellent. You are greeted by the manager, and the staff are attentive and friendly. They kept our meal perfectly paced with one order following another. There was no feeling of being rushed. There are a wide range of plates besides sushi, from starters to elaborate plates of rolls. The individual prices seem good, but of course it mounts up if you keep ordering. There is an extensive saki menu which is fun to explore. The staff is knowledgeable on what to order. The night we went everything was delicious and just the right size. This included the sunomono seaweed salad, grilled spicy eggplant, fried soft-shell crawfish rolls and clam and kimchi hotpot. I am told this is by the same people who run Sushi Ran in Sausalito. They also have desserts! When was the last sushi restaurant you went to that had something besides green tea ice cream? This is a higher caliber of food than is typical for Fairfax's conventional family Italian, Mexican and Indian restaurants and a wonderful addition.

We have now visited Village Sake many times and consider it one to the better restaurants in Marin County. Love all the unusual items on the menu as well as the sushi and sashimi. Service is great but get there early on the weekend because its very popular and fills up fast, the good news - they are expanding into the neighboring building.
