Relaxed hour long boat trip that gave an interesting view of the city. I think every tourist should do it
I love river trips (but not cruises), and think that, like bus tours, for the cities that have them, they are a great way to start off a visit to an unfamiliar town/city. This one was well worth doing. I caught the boat slightly south of the Holstentor gate bridge, on the old town side (see photo). The boat also stops just past the Radisson Senator Hotel near the Conference centre. I was able to take plenty of photos en route. The boat can be completely covered, if it rains, but was semi open on my trip, which was good. The riverboat pilot gives a live commentary, but it is in Geman only. It isn't possible to hear it in English. I believe this is true of the other riverboat company too. I don't think Lubeck has many English tourists, but I am sure an English commentary would have benefited Americans, along with other non-Germans who often have English as a 2nd language. However as long non-Germans speakers know that 'Links' means to the left and 'Rechts' means to the right, you will know where to look at the appropriate time. I didn't find the lack of English too much of an issue (and besides, I was in Germany not the US/England after all. The vast majority onboard were German tourists [a good thing, incidentally]). There is a place-map on the tables that has drinks prices on one side, and a tourist may on the other. Using the map it was possible to identify most sights that were being pointed out. I also used google-maps to pinpoint my progress and to give additional info, as the route the boat took often didn't go where i expected it to! The availability of seating was restricted due to Covid, which was understandable. The boat ride itself was an enjoyable relaxing circuit of the river that surrounds the old town. It was possible to see quite a few key places from the river. They serve drinks, but not until towards the end of the trip, not sure why they didn't do it sooner. It wasn't cheap, but I thought it was still worth the fare.

We planned a nice river boat ride with our kids to see the area near where my husband grew up. We were at the pier early and when the boat arrived, we realized there were several large groups which had reserved tables. They were allowed to board first, but it took quite a long time. Finally, we were allowed to board. In the enclosed area with tables, there were a few open but they had reserved signs, so we sat down at another table near a window which could open as it was warm that day, but also raining on and off. Unfortunately, the woman on the boat told us that we couldn’t sit there because the table was reserved, but we could take the table with the reserved sign?! which had a window that couldn’t open. We asked if we could just stay at the table we were at because of the window, but we were told no! Due to the heat and many people onboard, it felt a bit enclosed so we ended up having to sit outside instead. It started to rain, and even though no one ever got onboard to sit at those tables, they were still “reserved” so we couldn’t sit there! The tables were empty during the entire 1.5 hour ride! We decided to not support them further and bought no cake or drinks onboard. We can only recommend the trip if you reserve a table in advance. There is no customer service at all!
Be the first to ReplyA relaxing way to view the "old town" centre area of Lubeck
We took a one hour group canal cruise as part of a tour from Wismar to Lubeck. Our English speaking coach guide gave a commentary in English throughout the circular cruise, around the island old part of the city. It took one hour to complete, and from comments in some of the other reviews, we benefited from the English language facility. It is a relaxing way to see the historic landmarks from a different perspective during the trip. Refreshments were available for those wishing to purchase them. The boat was comfortable and provided open and covered accommodation, with good visibility.
Be the first to ReplyNo English audio guide - disappointing
There are several companies offering these boat tours on the canals, but none of the offered any guide in English. Disappointing. I'm sure that if one of the companies would start wih different languages, all the tourists would flock. As it was we had to manage best we could. There are not that many seats, so if you want to be sure to get a good seat by the window, try to board early on the route. Conclusion: If you just want to have a nice quick boat trip with no content, it's fine. They also serve drinks on the boat, to keep you busy and money flowing.
