A Bit Expensive But Best Sushi
Wako Japanese restaurant in San Francisco is a 1 Michelin Star restaurant known for their sushi. It boasts of having the best sushi in town so you must make a reservation.
Best and widest array of sushi in their menu. Its a bit on the expensive side but you are paying for freshness and quality of fish and seafood so no complaints.
Excellent sushi with excellent service.
We loved Wako. Service was excellent. Sushi was very high quality. Seasonal fish and ingredients well represented, just like they would be in Japan, such as matsutake and shirako in late October. Everyone seemed friendly and welcoming. We were so impressed that we kept ordering more nigiri.
Donโt hesitate to head over. This is the real deal.
Good fusion of Western and Japanese elements in what is Japanese food.
This is a smallish restaurant tucked away in the craziness that is Clement St in the Inner Richmond neighborhood. They seem to offer 'omakase', or set meals (prix fixe) with multiple courses served in a manner that is reminiscent of kaiseki (the high cuisine of Japan). The combinations of ingredients are interesting and done extremely well. This is GOOD fusion!! One might encounter mozuku (runny seaweed) flavored with strawberry, or a cube of smoked cream cheese topped with pickled plum. The sushi offerings are classic edomae (raw fish on top a small ball of vinegared rice) and not the 'rock n roll' rolls that Americans seem accustomed to. You will also not find 'B gourmet' offerings here such as ramen. Reservations are recommended. This is probably not very kid friendly. The dishes are unusual and more adult oriented. They have a nice sake selection, and offer flights with the different courses. This place is pricey, and would be nice for a special occasion. Oh, and service was excellent. My only complaint is that I wished they would describe the courses in Japanese, because I often don't understand what they meant when they tried to use their translation of an ingredient in English.

We had the Omakasa(Chefโs choice) there were 10 courses but we extended it to 12 course because every bite was sooo Damn good! I had the sake pairing was amazing! I would go to Wakoโs twice a week if I had the money. If you love sushi you must go! Cheers

Sushi was very very fresh. We enjoyed all of the sushi that we were presented, even ones that we were not familiar with. Service is impeccable. Atmosphere is very cozy. Would recommend getting reservations and sitting at the bar where you can interact with the chefs and watch them prepare your meal.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Sushi Experience in a hidden food temple
This hidden Sushi temple provides high class food in a modern and beautiful environment. The fact that the restaurantโs seating space is highly limited makes a diner experience to a very private and unforgettable experience. Quality of fish is superior and the service is very friendly. For the inexperienced Sushi guest an perfect explanation of the courses / food will be given by the staff. Definitely worth a visit.

We tried the sushi menu option for 135$ per person- and were not disappointed! You have to trust the chef, he chooses the items for the menu and one is better than the other! I don't see such a great and fresh quality of fish very often. The price is high but you get very high quality. I would recommend the pairing Sake to the menu- it's an even more intense experience!

Hubby chose this Richmond district restaurant based on its acclaim.
Wako opens only for dinner and on this weeknight both rounds of seatings are packed .
The interior is not huge but intimate, their wood panels are nice. (The restaurant has a very faint fishy smell inside, not sure if itโs avoidable)
Thereโre 2 Omakase Menus to choose from, one around USD 100 and one above. The guests within a party have to make the same choice . Sake pairing is a available .
We started with a pre-appetiser and a fusion-style Appetiser plate. 5 stars for the presentation but 3 for the taste for these.
Luckily the core offering, the Sushi (about ten pieces ) delivers handsomely. All the amberjack, scallop, snapper, flounder etc were fresh therefore delicious , and well-seasoned by the Chef. The sushi rice left less of an impression .
No dress code is necessary .
Sushi orgasm
On arrival at Wako I was a little disappointed by the manor of the waitress serving me as she reacted very badly to me being on my own (my girlfriend came down with a bug an hour or so before dinner) but luckily Tomo - who I think he was the head chef / Itamae (I hope I got that right) - found a seat for me at the bar. I then had one of the best tasting menus and sushi / Japanese meals of my life! Tomo was some sort of sushi wizard and I enjoyed everything he expertly made in front of me. He was very accommodating and nice to chat with to boot. All the other tasting dishes that came out were immaculately presented, tasted phenomenal and were delivered by a great waiter - "just Joe". He explained everything in detail and advised me on the best way to eat everything. He also pointed me to some delicious sake! Great experience and wonderful food. Doumo arigatou gozaimasu.

You have to be game to trust the chef - it is all omakase. You have to be open to trusting the sommelier - the sake is a tasting. But if you lean in, you will be rewarded in a very big way. A wood-paneled jewel, with beautifully prepared and presented food, the meal is memorable. The price might make your eyes pop out. However, life is meant to be lived. And Wako is a great stop along the way.
