Always such a pleasure!
We have been here a couple of times over the past 4 years. But their food and service never fail to delight us. This time around, we came with my sister-in-law and her husband who were visiting from Florida. Of all the dishes, I found the trio of lobster with strawberry infused sauce, skewered scallops, and gindara such a sublime treat. Dining at Wakuriya feels like being at someone’s home. Mayumi as always, was gracious and hospitable. She patiently explained everything. Her husband, Chef Katsuhiro, masterfully prepares each dish with painstaking precision and flare.

Mayumi and Katsuhiro run this small, but fantastic Japanese omakase restaurant in San Mateo. Not easy to get a reservation, but if you are able, you will get to enjoy this delectable Michelin Star dining experience. The menu combines the chef’s personal style with superlative Japanese and Californian ingredients. We are always highly impressed at our 10 course meal. It is a treat to behold.
They take reservations 30 days in advance. You should call and leave a message at midnight. Mayumi will call you back to let you know if you were able to get a reservation. Then, just enjoy the wonders that burst in your mouth when you taste Katsuhiro's cooking.
Well worth it!
You need to wake up and call at midnight but it is well worth it. First come first served. Chefs dégustation menu, unique combinations and flavors. Do not miss the sake flight sampling.
Hidden gem
I have been wanting to try Wakuriya for awhile now and I'm so glad I finally had the opportunity. I came here last night with my daughter and husband. I appreciate how the interior is not busy w/ decor and wild colors .Pop music played outside the entrace but inside you hear only soft Japanese music The colors are warm simple ,elegant and inviting We immediately noticed fellow patrons were all talking in low tones almost quietly.
I understand why. The main focus here is the food and the experience.
Every dish was excellent Set menu 8-9 courses. I won't go through all the dishes but the stand outs for me were the Kobe beef (sake kasu soup) and Big Eye tuna sashimi over rice w/a poached egg. Each dish was beautiful ,thoughtfully put together and flavorful. You really have to look at each dish and you will see the care and detail A little paper thin slice of carrot cut into a flower can be missed if you are too anxious to eat the delicious plate in front of you. Nice simple wine list but we each ordered the trio of cold sake ($30) smooth and delicious and my husband went for a Japanese beer
Our server was lovely ,incredibly polite and informative. Overall wonderful experience and we look forward to returning.
Authentic Japanese Gem
Outstanding food and service at this little omakase gem amongst the tall trees in a San Mateo shopping center. Very authentic Japanese service, delicious food, and sake flights! They change the 9 course tasting menu monthly, showcasing the freshest local flavors of the season. It’s not always easy to get a reservation, but get on the waiting list and you might get lucky. We had a wonderful evening here...highly recommend Wakuriya!
Be the first to ReplyExpensive but best restaurant I tried in the Bay area
It is a singular and small restaurant hidden in San Mateo hills. It is a small and cosy local distributed in a bar and 3 tables. No more that 15 people at the same time. It is dark and intimate. You cannot book more than 1 month in advace. It took us 2,30 to finish the menu. It is a fix menu that is $105 per person. The menu is made of 10 dishes. Every single dish was cooked with love and focus on detail. You have meat , veggie and fish dishes. there were a couple of them that we didn't love but rest of them were incredible. Waitress/owner was very nice and helpful. Just 2 Cons: - Price per menu -We had to wait too much for first dish (apparently a waiter was missing).

We have eaten kaiseki meals all over the Bay Area and Japan. Wakuriya is one of the best. Been there several times over a few years and they are consistent. Service, food taste, presentation are top notch. Creative food combinations though they are still traditional kaiseki. Price is fair, though this is not a cheap night out.
Only sad thing is we can't get reservations to return.
the best Japenese restaurant around
Wow.. two months to get reservation. Excellent restaurant operated by husband (chef) & wife (server). little expensive but worth it.

This place has one Michelin star, and it definitely deserves it.
Located in a strip mall, its appearance is very low key and unassuming. From the outside, you would not have guessed it's a place that serves up such excellent food.
The Decor is very minimalistic. Not a big place - a capacity of 18 people, two staggered seatings. The menu is set ($98/person), changing once every month.
It's a miracle we got a reservation. I called exactly 30 calendar days ahead trying to make a reservation as instructed by its website. Not knowing better, I called early in the morning and of course did not get in. Apparently people stay up until mid-night to place calls for reservation! Luckily, a couple of days to the original date I wanted a reservation for, someone cancelled and we were in!
By the way, this place would not be for kids.
Not enough stars to rate it!
We were in NYC all last week and came to visit our son on the way back home. He arranged for us to go here to help celebrate our 55th and OMG did he ever pick a winner.
Delectable. Incredible flavor and subtly done best Japanese cuisine we've had since our last trip to Nippon. A nine course meal with matching sake pairings. Everything from lobster to wagyu beef. Small, beautifully Japanese tasteful decor with classic attentive and careful service. Simply spectacular. A bit out of the way; if not, they would to,lock and bar the door. Seriously.
