Wakuriya San Mateo Reviews from The Last Year

What sets this restaurant apart is the consistent quality of their offerings
💯
It's evident that the chefs and the entire team take pride in their craft and strive to deliver a remarkable dining experience every time. This coupled with the exceptional service, creates an atmosphere that leaves patrons eagerly anticipating their next visit.
Incredible ambience
I was blown away. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with an awesome atmosphere and exquisite interiors that set the perfect tone for the evening. The attention to detail in the decor and ambiance was truly impressive.
Michelin Longevity.
Wakuriya, an unassuming restaurant in a non-descript strip mall, will soon be celebrating their 15th year anniversary.I was fortunate to make a return visit after almost 15 years and reservations are still as coveted as when they first opened and their status as a Michelin 1 star just as consistent. The kaiseki cuisine is neither as well known or as popular as sushi omakase but one could argue that the number of dishes and flavors is just as diverse and enjoyable. With only a chef and one server team, the interior is serene as you savor each dish and appreciate the presentation.I'm a fan of this cuisine and I'm happy to see Wakuriya still thriving as fellow newcomers Ranzan and Kaiseki Saryo Hachi join the scene. Wakuriya set menu $158 ~ toro tartare on monaka shell / New Caledonia blue shrimp and asparagus deep-fried crab cake wrapped with Sakura leaf, maple leaf farms duck / chawan-mushi with black cod and lobster / today's sashimi / tai snapper poêlé / hashi-yasume palette cleanser / Snake River Farms USA Wagyu beef, eringi mushroom, goma sauce / Sakura gohan with miso-sautéed Hokkaido scallop / kokuto and matcha crème brûlée, mochi trio Wakuriya (San Mateo, CA)Reservations are by phone only and seating is indoor only. Credit cards including AmEx are accepted.

I have been to Wakuriya multiple times (as in multiples of 10) over the past ~10 years. It is, hands down, the best Japanese restaurant in the Bay Area. It is in fact one of the best restaurant in any gastronomic style. Both Katsuhiro and Mayumi (owners and restaurateurs) are very focused, attentive and creative. They source top sake to match their absolutely succulent Kaiseki-style dishes. The restaurant is small, thus not noisy, and the music is well chosen (think low volume jazz). This is a great place for enjoying a long dinner and long conversations. You are transported to Kyotō without leaving the Bay Area.

Wahhh this Michelin star Japanese Kaiseki restaurant was definitely an experience to remember. The attention to detail on these 9 courses were beautifully executed. The small dishes, utensils and presentation made the dining experience elegant and fancy. Mayumi's hospitality in managing the dining area of the restaurant was exceptional. The way she gracefully brings out each dish and explains thoroughly on what we were about to indulge was a level of service beyond my expectations. Just by having the slightest conversations with her in between several courses, I could tell she was passionate about what her and her husband can showcase here at Wakuriya.Everything on the menu was delicious. One particular item I wished I was able to a la carte another was the New Caledonian blue shrimp grilled with uni. This grilled shrimp with uni was so sweet and buttery it left a sensational taste to my palate.Highly recommend dining here for the worthy Michelin star experience, great for special occasions. The only downside was calling to make the reservation at midnight.. Between the two of us, we called over 400 times in 3 nights to finally get the reservation but it'll show you put in the time and effort to make this night special.
One of my favorite Michelin-starred dining experiences to
One of my favorite Michelin-starred dining experiences to date! It's definitely tricky to get a reservation (we tried on several different days!), but once you secure the reservation, it's worth it! Wakuriya offers a multi-course kaiseki menu that combines authentic Japanese cuisine with modern techniques and presentation--the best of both worlds! The restaurant is run by a very nice couple who basically runs the whole show--reservations, host, server, and cook! The space itself is an intimate setting. At the time of my dine, there were only three other parties present (1 party of 6, a party of 2, and another party of 2 seated at the counter). The menu changes frequently, but the following was on my Kaiseki Menu for the night:- New Caledonian blue shrimp and Hokkaido scallop "ishi-yaki": This was such a fun way to start off the menu! They bring you a small heated stone that you grill your seafood on (or you can eat the items raw, since they are all sushi grade!)and then dip it in a refreshing pear-ponzu sauce. The scallops were so fresh and had the perfect texture.- These dishes came out as a trio: Tai snapper sashimi and white grape chestnut, Uni and toro on Japanese toast, Maple Leaf Farms duck with kabocha sauce: The uni and toro toast blew my mind...such an amazing bite! I also really enjoyed the thinly sliced duck--cooked to perfection!- Gindara to kani no jicama-mushi: One of my favorite dishes of the night! The black cod and crab were steamed with grated jicama. I can't even put into words how good this one was!- Chef's choice sashimi: I can't remember the name of the fish, but it melted in my mouth! I also really enjoyed their wasabi, and I'm not usually a fan of wasabi!- Saikyo miso gratin: King salmon grilled with Kyoto miso in the cutest little Dutch oven! I've never had anything like this before, and I loved it! So flavorful and not heavy at all for being a gratin!- Hashi-yasume (palate cleanser): The cutest palate cleaner! The Fuyu persimmon sorbet was so light and refreshing. It was topped with a dainty sesame ball on the prettiest ceramic spoon.- Snake River Farms USA wagyu beef with sake-"kasu" (lees) sauce: So tender!- Gohan and maitake mushroom and organic chicken served with "age-dashi" (deep fried) tofu and lobster- Green tea is served in between to help you digest. So soothing and perfect after eating such a big meal!- Dessert: "Satsuma-imo" (Japanese sweet potato) mochi cake was so nicely presented, and the mochi had the perfect springiness! They also served "matcha" (green tea) boules de neige for the perfect last bite.Overall, I really enjoyed this meal and would love to come back in the future!
My favorite restaurant in Bay Area.
Have visited here 7 times this year and I could never get tired of it. The menu changes monthly except December since they are now on vacation and will be back on January.Menu provides classic kaseiki with a modern twist. I have to say chef is really genius as he can come up with totally different menu every month with the freshest ingredient. The service is also great! Always ask for sake recommendation!Environment is quiet and tables are well separated. Great for dating. Will come back next February !

There's a reason why it's so hard to get a reservation of this place - this Kaiseki restaurant is amazing.Their attention to detail make your experience great once you step into the restaurant. All the dishes are executed to perfection and their seasonal menu makes it always fun to be here. We really enjoyed their sakura rice last time we visited - hope they will bring it back when it's season again. Can't wait to be back again soon!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res

Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Appointment
I was waiting on the transfer for name but it hasn’t happened yet and my reservation is tonight , will it be an issue that is hasn’t changed into my name yet
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Just got scammed!
Thats unfortunate but you can always get your money back if they cancel the reservation.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome
to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
