So, they moved and guised under a new name.
Only realized it when a review I posted 5 years ago appeared for the same business. Food was ok-lah, priced higher and charges 3% if paying with credit ... in 2023!? Oh btw, do not advertise on your menu 'chendor' when you don't intend to sell cendul. "We don't have chendor only the bean that goes with it. Want-ah?"

I cannot believe this is the same restaurant I used to go to for years in the Chinatown tunnel. It felt super nostalgic to taste the food again. Relocated in this newly renovated space, there's ample seating and more modern decor. We ordered the char kway teow and it was delicious! It's been a while since I've seen fish cakes in this dish as many Malay places have since cut it out due to increased costs. They didn't skimp out on the seafood at all here and the portion sizes are massive. I did wish there was more of a kick but I still very much enjoyed it. We also ordered the curry beef brisket and I loved how it came with a burner to keep the dish bubbling hot. The curry was flavorful and enough spice. The beef brisket was stewed so nicely, I could cut it with a fork. The pieces were tender and juicy and absorbed all that curry flavor. There were fair amounts of fatty pieces so keep that in mind if you prefer leaner pieces of meat. The portion, price and quality cannot be beat.

West New Malaysia has moved around the corner to Bayard St! Their new place has plenty of seating and the staff are still just as friendly as ever. On my most recent visit, I ordered their satay tofu ($10.95) and their egg and noodle scramble ($13.95). The tofu was interesting bc the peanut satay sauce was spooned on top of the pile of cucumbers and tofu, instead of stuffed like at Nyonya's. I think I prefer the stuffed version bc it's easier to eat and this way you get a bite of the sweet and nutty sauce, the crispy tofu, and the crunchy cucumber and bean sprouts altogether. Their flat rice noodle has tons of wok char flavor and is served in an eggy gravy that feels silky and luxurious. Still a solid choice for a meal in Chinatown!

I've been eating from this place for years but never tried their new location, they used to be in a tunnel at their old location. My mom grew up in Chinatown and this has been one of her go to places back in the 80s-90s and it feels crazy to still be able to eat this now. Honestly it isn't as good as the old location but I haven't found another Malaysian place as good as this one. The curry beef brisket has always been my go-to growing up and even now, it definitely could've been more tender but still good when paired with rice. Their pineapple fried rice tasted like it had a hint of ketchup or tomato which hit great for me. The roti canai has never been my favorite so I was pretty whatever about that I had to keep my girl happy because she wanted that. Finally the hainanese chicken was fire, it was the perfect balance of soy sauce and paired great with the scallion garlic sauce. Overall, eating food from this place gets me in the feels and I'm gonna continue to come to get that.
Be the first to ReplyFood and staff are good.
Could use a bit more salt on the chicken and sauce. And less sugar on the fried fish. Amazing food and the shaved ices are a must. My personal favorite is the lychee ice. Really fast service and nice staff. The place can be packed during dinner time, so plan accordingly.

Service was quick and friendly, everything we ordered was ready right away. Favorites were the roti canai and curry chicken and rice. The chicken meat is moist and tender, the skin is with excellent firm texture with no fat under it. The chicken rice is nice as well. Highly recommended.

We were frequent visitors at New Malaysia when they were at their old location. This was my first time dining here, but my mom and sister have been before. My mom made a reservation for us for a table of 5 for 7pm on a Friday night and they even sat her early. We had a nice table in their adjacent dining room, which was nice. We ordered a few dishes, including one New Years special of braised oysters, mushrooms, and bak choy. It was great. Roti was quite good with a huge chunk of chicken in the curry sauce. Hainanese Chicken was tender and juicy. One minor snag that they fixed - their Chef's Special Fried Rice with squid, covered in omelet and tomato sauce - is not actually the Chef's Special. If you order it off the menu by the number and name, they'll give you something else. Two waiters confirmed this. So make sure if you want that dish, list out all the ingredients - it's called something else in Chinese. Service was attentive and food was a good price.
Be the first to ReplySolid dining experience.
Their forte is definitely the curry. The Roti Canai and chicken/beef skewers are so flavorful and delicious. We also tried their fried shrimp in salty egg but it fell short. It was not crunchy enough so I'd stick to non-fried seafood items here like the Nasi Lemak which is always good. Service is attentive and the space is clean though on the small side so check in if your group is larger than 4.
Be the first to ReplyAs a native Malay, this is one of the best Malay
As a native Malay, this is one of the best Malay restaurants I've been too in the United States. The O-Jian (oyster omelet) is one of the best made, not salty, not fishy, just right. The rendang (beef stew) tastes just like ones back from Malaysia and had the perfect amount of spice. The kang kung (morning glory) with squid was also perfectly cooked. I recommend getting the hainese rice instead of white rice as it goes well with the chicken as well as the rest of the dishes. The restaurant is pretty small, so we did have to wait a little bit, but we spoke to the owners in Cantonese and they were very friendly and understanding and helped to get us seated. A must try place if you want authentic tasting Malay food.

I have always liked your food, but today I found out that the portion has been reduced by half and the price has risen a lot. I am really disappointed this time! no good

I was walking around chinatown when I noticed this new restaurant that I've never seen before. My boyfriend recognized this place and said it used to be somewhere else in chinatown and they relocated here. When we went in, we were greeted immediately and seated. This place is very new, cute, and clean. We ordered and the food came out quickly. We ordered Hainanese Chicken over Rice (my favorite dish), Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak, and Iced Coffee. They make the Roti Canai smaller than what I typically see at other Malay restaurants. Service was good. Loved the food and am looking forward to come back if I am in the area again.

The restaurant just moved to 69 bayard is nice but a little smaller than the previous location. My malaysian friend introduced me to stingray dish. I was surprised that the had that in the menu. It was actually pretty good the texture of was really smooth. I totally recommend it for those that are adventurous.

It's been years since my friends and I ate at West New Malaysia. This will always be dubbed "That Malaysian place in the tunnel". They've reopened their location to a more foot traffic touristy area. Cleaner and brand new. After shopping and errands, was happy to stumble on this place. The food was ok, not as memorable in taste as much as I'd remember it. The roti canai pancake was tiny and not as large and flaky like other Malaysian restaurants I've been to. Curry for the appetizer itself was small and no signs of proteins were in it, only potatoes. The satay tofu with peanut sauce was enjoyable as the tofu was fried well with the peanut sauce and salad sandwiching the tofu was cold. A nice temperature mixture for the taste buds. Mee Siam was ok - it was sweet more than spicy (don't know if that was the intention for this dish). An ok alternative for Malaysian food if you want to stay on the Bayard and Canal St. side. Cleanliness, service, and wait times were good and we were properly taken care of.

New location on 69 Bayard street, same great taste, value, and service. I've been eating here since I was a kid and happy they found a new home. Don't miss out!!!
Be the first to ReplyGood food.
Just moved to 69 Bacardi St.But still pretty good Malaysian Chinese grub.Unfortunately new place is smaller and has fewer tables soIf you need to wait, it's outside rather than the covered alley in the hall. Hope they improve the new place.
Be the first to ReplyCame here on a weekday with a couple of friends.
What I got; Indian mee goreng and the roti canai. Roti: 4/5; I loved how it was crispy and fresh! The curry wasn't overpowering and that's a plus' they're really generous with the chicken and potato in the curry!Indian Mee goreng; 4/5; The noodles were so good and I liked how there was a spice to the noodles. The sauce doesn't overpower the dish and it was very enjoyable. I also love that it's very affordable and filling. Would definitely get this again. Service; 4/5; Overall; the service was fast and attentive. We didn't have to wait long which was a plus. They also take credit card as well. Would come here again.

Delicious chicken pad thai and beef brisket with broad noodles. Whenever I am in the area I always order those dishes. They have many other classic Malaysian dishes. Best Malaysian restaurant in Chinatown!
Be the first to ReplyAlways my go-to for Malaysian food in Chinatown.
It's kind of hidden away in the tunnel. So we locals call it the "Tunnel Malay". A must get is the appetizer Roti.

Love this place! It'd been a few years since I was last in Chinatown. But it's still my favorite place to eat there. The roti canai is solid. They always give you a pretty big chunk of chicken and is a great starter. If you are hungry or go with a group, get more than one, it's not the best for sharing. I normally go for one of their noodle or rice dishes but I was craving seafood and so I got their curry seafood soup for the first time. No extras come with it but I didn't think it was necessary. There was a lot of squid, fish cake, shrimp and bean sprouts. The broth was top notch and honestly, I have no complaints after this meal. Service was so fast, I hardly had to wait in between sitting down, ordering, and eating. I highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyThis Malaysian restaurant was pretty good! It's a bit hard
This Malaysian restaurant was pretty good! It's a bit hard to find; I'm glad my friend showed me this place. You have to walk down an alleyway to get to the entrance. For a weeknight dinner, there was no wait to get seated. My friend and I shared the food we ordered family style, and then we had shaved ice for dessert. Our server asked us if we wanted everything at once or shaved ice later, so we confirmed we just wanted food first and then shaved ice after we finish our food. This makes me wonder if some people prefer eating shaved ice alongside their meals.... Never been asked a question like that before (usually it's assumed that desserts come after the meal). The food was flavorful but a bit greasy. We had noodle dishes. If I come back, I'd be interested in trying the Hainanese chicken. I took off a star for the shaved ice dessert, because it's misleading. I ordered the lychee shaved ice, but there was no lychee flavor. It was just ice with an artificial syrup (the kind that smells/tastes like ticks.... the fake cherry thing), and a few lychees from the can added to it. So the dessert was basically just ice with fake cherry syrup and a few bits of canned lychee and no lychee flavor whatsoever. I wish they used condensed milk instead of the gross syrup...

Please continue to support Chinatown with love! While the place has expanded, the food is just as good as I remembered it from my college years! Serving up delicious Malaysian eats for over 20 years, this is a well known "hidden" spot! Oh the irony. lol What sets New Malaysia apart? Their "shaved ice" drinks! It's actual shaved ice with your lychee so a drink + dessert in one! Yum. We got a few dishes to share:-1/4 dark hainanese chicken (scallion sauce!)-salt & pepper squid (so crispy!)-morning glory with belacan sauce (so good)-stir-fry white fish with chives (meh... not great)-chicken oil rice -lychee ice-soy bean with herbal jelly (this one is a drink)We really wanted to try the shrimp with cereal... sadly they were out of cereal... the essential ingredient. lol Service is spotty. Quick to seat you, take your order and give you the food. Then it's MIA season. Asked for spoon, extra scallion sauce, extra chili sauce... none ever came. It wasn't a full house either. *sigh* Great value for what we ordered. #supportchinatown #lovechinatown#yelplife
Be the first to ReplyOur second time here, the food is delicious and ample.
Best Curry Vegetable Casserole (we call it soup). To find the restaurant, when you go on Bowery to where 46-48 should be, pop down the covered alleyway to find it! It was full of appreciative Asian people. On a Saturday evening, it was happily noisy (for us elders), if you mind noise, try it on a weeknight or midday. Anyway, the food is great. You do have to wave your hand to get staff to come over--they're really busy. Recommend highly! BTW it's also called New West Malaysian Restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyDisgusting ppl.
I ordered from them at 5:15 pm. And at 6:45 I decided to check to see what is taking so long. They canceled my order without letting me know cause they were unable to fulfill my order. Contacted uber eats and that was even worst talked to a robot who pretended they weren't. Said they will make sure they don't charge me. Charge me for what eating dust???? So make sure if you order from them its not uber eats or any online service cause I ordered from seamless one from them and they also messed that order Up. guess they are stuck in the 80's and don't understand the business of delivery service.
