So disappointed after reading such great reviews. My pre order of Oyster in Guinness batter was very nice. My starter of scallops and pig cheeks was also very nice. However the main course Lobster lasagna was over powering with tarragon, I don't mind tarragon but my husband ordered the same and really doesn't like it, he would not have ordered it if it was mentioned on the menu. He politely ate the lobster and left all the other ingredients. When we mentioned to the nice waitress that he would not have ordered it had he known there was tarragon in it and perhaps they should mention it on the menu, there was no real concern that they had a disappointed customer but said they would tell the chief. Our desserts were far from the high standards we were lead to believe. The chocolate, caramac fondant was just turned out on the plate with a scoop of ice cream no garnish or even a dusting of icing sugar. There was no melting filling or Caramac to be seen and very dry. The blueberry souffle was was ok but tasted eggy at the bottom. I returned the fondant as it was inedible and was not charged. Service is poor and would definitely not recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent modern seafood set menu.
Great and really modern set seafood menu. Really well executed, fresh and original seasonal flavours and combos. Great friendly service and casual atmosphere. Not cheap but good value considering the effort and skill that has gone into the dishes. BYO wine which is a great idea (and cheaper !) and works well as there’s a great Offy just over the road. Will recommend to friends and look forward to returning.

Our annual visit from London never disappoints. Originally my colleagues came for oysters but this is probably the best fish restaurant we’ve experienced, with a varied menu. With a byo wine the value is exceptional.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous family evening.
Beautiful food, exquisitely presented, had the taster menu and every course was a perfect explosion of flavours. Staff were friendly but not overbearing, interior is tasteful and cosy. We all had a wonderful night.

First time but certainly won’t be the last. Warm welcome, wonderful imaginative food and a very reasonable corkage charge for BYO.

We sat in the shop as restaurant was fully booked. We had a tapas of bits & pieces which were all so good & so fresh. We were only visiting the area & 162 miles from home.....disappointing we don't have anything like this although we live in Norfolk!

This place is one-of-a-kind and we couldn't be happier with our meal there. The place is TINY so do book early to avoid disappointment. We started with -- you guessed it -- Oysters. We chose three of the approx half dozen varieties they have on offer. They were fresh and delicious. We also had the Korean shrimp --which was sticky and superb (though I could have done without the coriander leaf). For main courses we had skate, cod, haddock and monkfish. ALL OUTSTANDING. The puddings did not disappoint either... rhubarb soufflé, chocolate fondant, and an original whipped cheesecake situation that was truly original and out of this world. The service is fantastic, and there's an off-license (literally called the OFFY) directly opposite where they will recommend a bottle or more to pair with your meal. All told a delightful success and we hope to return!

Another visit to this gem of a restaurant. We fortunately had the tasting menu; 8 courses of sublime dishes with friendly and efficient hospitality. Can’t recommend highly enough.

We are now having to invent extra reasons to celebrate with lunch at Wheelers. We used to called it The Birthday Club, but three times a year is just not enough. Wheelers will never be awarded a Michelin star I would guess as so many other factors support the winning of a star more than the excellent service and sublime seafood present here. Personally I find the whole place, still in a time warp, bar the kitchen a masterpiece of stainless steel cleanliness, is it's charm, so perfectly retaining the memory of seaside hostelries of a bygone age. We invented our extra visit to try out a new menu and were transported as ever into the upper echelons of seafood perfection on a plate. Even the 'amuse bouche' slivers of warm homemade bread and a homemade pesto to die for presented on a slate to share is a dish in itself. After a half dozen Rock Oysters zinging with freshness, I moved on to a new, and as far as I am aware, unique dish. Roasted Scallops, Rabbit Fish Finger, White Onion, Rosemary and Pecorino Puree, Dry aged Bacon, Courgette and Scallop Roe Veloute. Quite a mouthful for a starter but just seafood heaven worth three Michelin stars in my book. The sheer intricacy of the dish, especially the rabbit fish finger showed just how much trouble they go to here inventing something that rises head and shoulders above the rest, a combination made in heaven. Who would ever contemplate twinning rabbit with scallops, a last meal for the condemned man indeed and I for one will weep if it is ever removed from the menu. We managed to prise chef from the kitchen near the end of service and it was not surprising after his explanation of how something so simple was in fact a masterpiece of construction, planning and execution. Needless to say the rest of the meal was superb as always ending with a sublime rhubarb soufflé. Should you ever find yourselves aiming for the South East coast, in Michelin language then it's 'definitely worth a detour' to Wheelers, though book well in advance. Our next birthday is in July, so we are going to have to invent another good reason to return before then.
Be the first to ReplyLucky to find space at the counter for early evening snack.
Sat at the counter for snacks early evening. Had brilliant curried haddock fish cake and chilli salmon with samphire. Then had takeaway crab roll and crab tartlet the next day. All delicious.

I never normally write reviews but felt compelled. I’ve wanted to visit Wheelers for years, my husband surprised me by booking a table for us and I was so excited. Unfortunately, after being seated and already drinking our wine, they realised they had made a mistake with our booking by booking us on the wrong day. We were given the option to either leave (because there was nothing they could do about it) or move tables and only have a one hour slot. We didn’t feel they were over-ally apologetic which left us feeling a bit miffed. We agreed to stay and try and finish up within the hour… hoping to be blown away by the food. Our starters were lovely, but our mains were so hot that they had to have been microwaved and my husbands mixed grill wasn’t worth the price - tiny prawns and bland tasting. Mine was OK and that’s all I can say. We decided to skip dessert, fearing for our time slot running out and not wanting to spend any more money. Our bill came to £86… I would have thought they could have deducted something for being so rushed and the inconvenience of messing up our booking… it wouldn’t of left such a bad taste if the food had blown us away but sadly wasn’t the case. Reading the previous review, maybe they were having a bad day/weekend- but sadly we wouldn’t be in a rush to return.
Be the first to ReplyHigh expectations but didn't deliver
Was really looking forward to our lunch at Wheeler's having read all the great reviews and loving our seafood, only to be very disappointed after being served a starter and a main that were barely warm and served in cold dishes. Also no spoon provided (twice) for the chowder. It was extremely difficult to get any staff attention and by the time they'd sent both courses back to be reheated, my partner had finished so i had to eat both courses alone. There was no offer to take back my partner's dish at the same time, or offer of a discount which would normally happen in any restaurant with good service. The £90 bill left a bitter taste.

Superb meal as always, excellent service and outstanding quality food. Great to see the legendary Delia still working as hard as ever. This is the most amazingly authentic seaside restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent as always
Anniversary lunch at Wheeler's. Excellent as always. Service was efficient and friendly, the food was divine. My better half not so keen on fish, so pre-ordered a steak which was cooked to perfection. I had the scallops, followed by the halibut - both really good. The bill was surprisingly modest considering the quality.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent, innovative sea food restaurant
Have now eaten there twice in 2 months , the weekend tasting menus, and an a la carte 3 course weekday lunch Can not fault this small , family run restaurant at all . It’s not posh , only about 6 tables each in 2 rooms , but seating and serving in 1 room at say 1 pm and 3 pm , and the other room at 2 and 4 pm Staff are lovely But the reason to eat here is the imaginative , very well thought out dishes. So different from the usual lump of skate with brown butter, or sea bass with samphire Some of the best seafood dishes we have eaten anywhere in the world Thoroughly recommend this restaurant, it’s not posh , but the food is top notch

A wet Tuesday and came across this little gem. If you like seafood this is a must visit. Menu is extensive and I had various types of Oysters and curried haddock fish cakes which were excellent. Service was very good and would recommend
