Hidden Gem in Gotanda area!
Torishin is a small yakitori (chicken skewers) restaurant not far from the Gotanda JR station. There is an English placard that explains yakitori in general, and more important, what makes Torishin unique.
The key to Torishin success is the care, dedication, and joy that they bring to yakitori. You do not choose the food, the chef decides for you. So, he brings you new plates as they are prepared. You can stop at any time.
Most important, is the owner is a very nice man, who takes time to talk to his customers; his English is not great, but we had fun communicating nonetheless!
Cannot recommend more highly - I will definitely be back!
Amazing Yakitori
I thought all yakitori (chicken skewers) was the same.
This place proved me wrong.
I didn't even know it was a thing, but this joint serves yakitori omakase style. Sometimes called chef's choice, there is ostensibly a menu, but you don't come here to order a la carte. The chef picks everything for you, and if he likes you, you get to choose some extra dishes at the end.
Come ready for an adventure, because you know you're getting chicken, but you won't know much past that. English is not in evidence, so I hope you can speak Japanese or know someone who can. I was introduced to this restaurant by a business colleague in Japan.
Reservations are highly recommended, as the restaurant is tiny and won't fit too many people.
The chicken is super fresh, and it's likely some of it will be raw. I didn't get sick, so I wouldn't be too afraid, but like I said, come ready for an adventure. The raw chicken liver is better than I would expect. The chicken thigh and wings were amazing, as was the tsukune (ground chicken on a skewer). Everything was really good, and I highly recommend it if you have any appreciation for yakitori at all and are looking for something that's a cut above everything else I've ever had.
