beautiful and relaxing
The atmosphere here is calming and beautiful. The food was absolutely wonderful and we all left feeling relaxed and like we'd had a spa day.
Be the first to ReplyBEST RESTAURANT EVER!
I have eaten all over the globe and was absolutely delighted to find this hidden gem very close to me. It's the best food I've ever had. The staff is so kind, the food is amazing, and the atmosphere is incredibly peaceful. This is a traditional style keiseki and the whole dinner takes around 3 utterly blissful hours. We left feeling full, happy, and peaceful. This is a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Yamazushi!
Be the first to ReplyWe are fortunate to have this in the triangle
I've dined at many fine restaurants, including Masa in New York, and in a few fine dining establishments in Tokyo. The experience at Yamazushi is comparable, and while not cheap, the price is appropriate for what is delivered. The food and art are excellent. The NC flounder pieces were a highlight, and I'd never had it served in such a setting before. Compared to other experiences in this category, there are fewer choices at Yamazushi - a fixed menu, a choice of only 5 bottles of saki, and two teas. But the items which are on offer are excellent, and in return, the setting is intimate.
The closest I'd have to a complaint is that it took a few months' notice to reserve a weekend sitting, and that the conversation/voices were a bit loud from the table next to us. But that comes directly from having a small setting, so I understand not much can be done.
Highly recommended.
A complete pleasure
For our 40th anniversary our children gave us a gift of some time away from home and a hard-to-get reservation at this wonderful restaurant. This, in honor of where we met in Japan. The delicious 8 course dinner (with 5 sake pairings) evoked memories of our life outside of Tokyo. Pure Japan. George Yamazawa's talents as a chef are equaled by his craftmanship at the kiln. Most of the plates and bowls used in the dinner were made by him. For a very special occasion this is a must.
Be the first to ReplyThe Most Exquisite Meal of My Life
I first heard about Yamazushi from a seatmate at our favorite sushi bar. Keiseki in North Carolina? Having experienced this unique style of Japanese cuisine in Kyoto, I was dubious. Now I am not. Our recent meal at Yamazushi was as authentic as if we were back in Japan. From the moment we stepped inside and slipped on our cozy house slippers, we were treated to an intimate, sensual (i.e., engaging all the senses at once) experience. Once ushered to our private table, we were greeted by the chef's wife and her helper who served us with attentiveness and grace, from their initial offering of oshiburi (hot scented towels) to their final preparation of macha (green tea). Each course of meticulously prepared morsels arrived on artisanal pottery plates that were hand made by the chef. The colors and flavors of each course were artistic creations, but most memorable were sea bream sashimi with a green tea-sea salt condiment, an exquisite plum-persimmon sorbet, miso-glazed sea bass, and a savory assortment of home-made Japanese pickles. The specialty sakes we ordered with each course were equally unique. Yes, the evening was very expensive - but this is a meal - no, an experience - that we will never forget.
Be the first to ReplyUnique and unforgettable dinner
We had read and heard good things about this restaurant and finally booked a midweek dinner here for our anniversary. We conducted all of our communications via email. The restaurant is very small -- only about 2-3 tables -- but it's like entering another world. You leave your shoes at the door and are offered slippers. They only seat a handful of people per night. Yes, it is very expensive but worth a splurge to treat yourself to a very unique dining experience. You get multiple courses, all served on pottery handmade by the chef. I'm not one to take photos of food, but the presentation of most dishes was outstanding. We ate a lot of things we never had before. A few drawbacks were that early on in our dinner we could hear whiny kids outside the restaurant. That's not their fault but it detracted from the experience. Also know that if you order bottled or sparkling water, you get charged for it. The chef's wife is your hostess and server and is very pleasant. As a special treat, they gifted us with a small bottle of sake for our anniversary. If you want a special experience, this place will not disappoint. If you want traditional sushi, there are several other excellent options in Durham.
Be the first to ReplyThe finest Japanese restaurant and food I have ever experienced
The people are nice and the food and presentation are well worth the price. The ambiance was truly perfect and diverted the customer from a restaurant in a shopping mall to a fine eater in Japan. Well deserved of its 5-Star rating.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great service, great presentation, but maybe too expensive
I had a tough time giving this restaurant 4 stars instead of 5, but I felt that a price of $110 + drinks + matcha was a little excessive. However, leaving that aside, the experience is fantastic. You really do forget that you are in the same shopping center as Chubby's Tacos (nothing against them, they do have good food).
We were the only people in the restaurant for our meal, but they have it set up so that it doesn't feel awkward. The food is all very good, and presented well on custom pottery. They stretch the meal out over about 2.5 hours, which is nice. The food really was good, but only one or two dishes really stuck out in my mind.
All that being said, it is a great experience, at least once.
Hard to believe we were in a shopping mall in Durham
Our kaiseki dinner was artistic in its presentation and this beauty was equaled by the fine selection and preparation of each course. With sake pairings this was a very expensive meal. However the restaurant seemed to serve only two tables a night and it might take a month to get a reservation. As expensive as it was the meal cost less than a flight to Kyoto- or even New York.
Be the first to ReplyPrestigious Japanese Food
You wouldn't expect a five star Japanese restaurant to be in a strip mall, but Yamazushi pulls it off well. You enter the restaurant into a small welcome gallery where the hostess is waiting for you with traditional Japanese slippers. You are then escorted to your table (there are only 4 in the whole restaurant) and seated to indulge in a sensational 8 course authentic Japanese meal served on pottery that is handmade by the chef. Definitely try out their sake and imported beer, which is served in fine Japanese crystal glassware. This place is a perfect setting for a special occasion or dinner date.
