A reservation only place.
...very authentic Japanese cusine. I recommend the dumplings, the scallops and eggplant. We were given a complimentary appitizer...family business...a wonderful experience. All food served on handcrafted pottery made by the owner. If you are looking for edamme or sushi rolls, this is not your place. Next i will try the lunch menu which had tempura.

My husband and I had our fist date there almost 10 years ago. Still our favorite place, fish are always fresh, they have the best shrimp tempura very authentic. We have tried almost every thing on the menu, we liked everything. Definitely check this place out

This was an amazing experience, a truly once in a lifetime meal. The hosts cared about our dining experience and thoughtfully explained the methodical and intricate preparation of each course. We can't wait to return! Best food we've ever had.

First and foremost I want to say this is a must try experience. The menu does change each time so it will be different. Let's start with the atmosphere and service. -Atmosphere is very personal and you just feel a sense of pride in the place. -Service is TOP notch and traditional in the Japanese way. If you have not experienced it this is a must. Now let's good to the food. There are 8 different courses that you will try of the course of your adventure. Each dish is handmade by the chief and obviously made with a lot of care. There is no rush to eat or anything along those lines so please take your time to enjoy every savory moment. We had a bunch of unique dishes that I can't even remember the name of. However, my favorites were the fried mushrooms, dragon fruit, and seafood hotpot. Again, everything is made by the Chief and is unique in nature. Also, it is EXTREMELY cool that the all the plates are handmade my the Chief also. Don't expect to get full off the food but you will be satisfied. However, you are definitely going to get a unique experience. The food is amazing and the experience is definitely something you will only get from this place unless your in Japan.

Wow. A hidden gem in the Triangle that offers a truly unique and authentic Japanese experience, definitely worth trying out once! But be prepared to spend ~$200 per person.Yamazushi specializes in traditional kaiseki dinners. For those who are unfamiliar (as I was prior to dining here), kaiseki is a term for a multi-course dining experience (different from omakase in that the dishes are not exclusively nigiri) that embodies hospitality in its truest form. It was evident that the owner and chef were striving for excellence and attention to detail with every one of the eight courses. Contact months in advance to get a table reservation - seats are very limited each night. Before I talk about the culinary aspect of the night, I want to make note of the fact that, from the outside, Yamazushi is very unassuming and almost easy to miss. Once you enter, however, you are transformed into what feels like a different world. Remove your shoes and put on the slippers provided. Let the very polite waitresses (who are dressed in gorgeous kimonos) lead you to your table, and notice the beautiful tapestries and artistic touches all around the restaurant. The dishware - oh my goodness. This is not something that normally makes it into my Yelp reviews, but I just about wanted to purchase every single plate and glass that was set in front of us. All unique, hand crafted, and stunning (imported from Japan). Photography isn't really encouraged here so I didn't take many photos - sorry about that!Onto the food - each of the eight courses was so thoughtfully crafted. The food ranged from sashimi to eggplant to conch to seafood hotpot - you really have to see and taste it all for yourself, since words can't do the descriptions justice. I was blown away by the presentation of it all, but I think the flavors of some parts did not quite meet the level of presentation, hence me giving 4 stars instead of 5. Still, we were pleased with every course.I highly recommend asking for sake recommendations too - we ordered 2 types and were wowed by the smoothness and sweetness of both. You can also opt in to the sake pairing for an extra $48/head.Very pricey, but well worth a visit. Don't miss out on this incredible kaiseki dining experience! Thank you to everyone at Yamazushi for a truly unforgettable evening!

What a gift that we have a place like Yamazushi in our part of town. Chef George Hitoshi Yamazawa has created something truly special in Woodcroft, a dining experience that is on par with any of the finest restaurants in the world. The eight-course kaiseki menu never disappointed, but the highlights were the dishes that featured scallop and North Carolina flounder. The grilled Japanese eggplant was also an unexpected delight. I won't go into full detail of each course because the menu is centered around what is fresh and in-season, so it is best experienced for yourself.Thank you to George and Mayumi for this amazing meal.
Be the first to ReplyThe best word I can use to describe my experience at this
The best word I can use to describe my experience at this place is bizarre. I had been eager to try it for years after hearing about what a unique dining experience it is: it feels like a huge joke to me that so many people consider this "fine dining."The prices are absolutely astronomical (bill was $300+ for two people) and the prix fixe menu price did not include alcoholic beverages. I did not discriminate against the strip mall location of the restaurant prior to going, but upon paying what we paid to be there, I do feel like the atmosphere is pretty pathetic. When you can see drop tile ceiling, it doesn't feel like you should be paying over $100/person for really sad, small courses. Our first course, for example, was basically one fingerling potato per person. Maybe the price would have been worth it if we had actually been getting fish with every course, but many of the courses just seemed like weird, cheap, basic food disguised as a delicacy. I'm absolutely shocked that people continue to pay to eat here.
Be the first to ReplyFortunately someone cancelled and we were able to dine here
Fortunately someone cancelled and we were able to dine here without waiting 3 months. The restaurant is very intimate and only seats 4 people at a time. You take your shoes off when you enter and put provided slippers on. The restaurant was really quiet and I felt like I had to whisper the whole night. ย I think it cost $150 a person for maybe 7 courses. There was soup, sushi, tempura, sea bass and multiple ice creams. Everything was good except for the ice cream all of them had ice crystals in them not the creamy texture you want. It was a nice experience, I would say go once to experience it, but I'm not sure I would go back. The chef's wife was also the server. She was really sweet and asked for recommendations of other restaurants in Durham and shared some of her own. At the end of dinner, they gave us a bottle of Sake and a thank you card.
Be the first to ReplyThis was an incredible, delicate, beautiful experience.
This is probably the most awe-inspiring dining that you can find in the triangle. It's best not to show up expecting a bunch of familiar nigiri sushi - there's many many courses, all of which are delicious and interesting. All of the pottery and plates are created by the chef - they're insanely beautiful and with the price of admission.
Be the first to ReplyThe 5 star aspect of this is the service, decor, and place
The 5 star aspect of this is the service, decor, and place settings. ย All are absolutely world class. ย Two servers cater to all your needs unobtrusively, they keep your drinks poured (did we really need all that sake??), and plates are cleaned and delivered flawlessly. ย ย The interior is beautiful with a little garden and many Japanese decorations. ย The plates and glasses they use are absolutely gorgeous, I don't think you'll see anything like it anywhere else. ย Food wise, for the price, I would say is more of a three star experience. ย The highlight was the fried course. ย A very crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside scallop and vegetables. ย Sushi and sashimi courses were good--but equivalent to what you can get in other places. ย There were other good, but not outstanding, Japanese flavors in the other courses. ย The green tea ice cream based desert was good, but not outstandingly so.
Be the first to ReplyAn incredible experience.
Each of the 8 courses was so so delicious and I couldn't have dreamed of a better dinner. The flow of courses is well balanced in taste, texture, and appearance - engaging all 5 senses. The ambience of the restaurant and delicate attention to detail (and hand crafted pottery!) added to such a wonderful meal. The owners take great care to ensure that you enjoy yourself and it is absolutely worth every penny. George and Mayumi are true gems in the Bull City. Ichigo ichie.
