This place is Zenebech but still shows up under another
This place is Zenebech but still shows up under another name on Yelp. I'd once had lunch here and found the kitfo (with jalapeno bits), injera, and fresh veggies to be sumptuous. I fantasized about returning and crossed several state lines. When I came back for dinner and ordered doro tibs (chicken), what I got was not "tender cubes of chicken" but disappointing cubes of rock hardened repeatedly fried meat. I exchanged this for beef tibs. That too was replete with hardened and rubbery flesh which had been tossed on the frying pan for who knows how many times through out the day/days. The homemade cheese this time also seemed dry, older, and bland. Avoid the tibs and extra $4.99 for cheese, or simply go elsewhere to get your DMV Ethiopian groove on.
Be the first to ReplyThis mess my first time trying Ethiopian food.
Unfortunately I didn't care much for the food but my party liked it.
Be the first to ReplyAmong all the Ethiopian places around, this one checks all
Among all the Ethiopian places around, this one checks all the boxes. My partner and I were in town for his job and we needed to get our fix of injera et al. before we headed back north, and this was within walking distance of our hotel. It was super packed, so we had to wait a bit to get someone to seat us, and then we ended up just sitting in the window across from the bar. We ordered a bunch of veggies (greens, lentils, beets), doro wot, and I believe awaze tibs. The service was okay, and the food was good! I can't say it was the best I've ever had, but it was a nice opportunity to grab some of this cuisine before we headed back home. They are definitely feeling the pressure of being understaffed, so it's hard for me to dock them on service, but I'd say if you're staying at the Washington Hilton and need a bite, this is a good spot.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a great spot to try authentic Ethiopian food! I
This is a great spot to try authentic Ethiopian food! I have never had Ethiopian food before and had a pretty good experience here.We started with the lentils sambusa. These are kind of like samosas, and the lentil filling was nice and flavorful. Then for our main we got the 4 meat / 4 veggie combo. Everything is placed on top of the injera bread, and we got an additional piece of injera on the side. This ended up being a little bit too much food to split between two people, so I'd recommend getting this combo if you have more people. All the meats and veggies were good though, and I liked that we had a variety of items to try.The food overall was pretty tasty, but I wasn't really blown away by anything. I might not have the right palette for these flavors, but if you really like Ethiopian food I think you would like this! And it was a good spot to try Ethiopian food for the first time.
Be the first to ReplyHot, spicy, and not very interesting.
The lamb was chewy and not up to usual Ethiopian standers. The fish was very very salty and overly spicy. There was an absence of that wonderful Ethiopian smell that comes from exotic spices and loving cooking. The place was a disappointment. The injura was good.
Be the first to ReplyLet's not kid ourselves - this is the real deal right
Let's not kid ourselves - this is the real deal right here. To start, excellent service. And I'll shoot it straight: white dude tryna order Ethiopian food can be daunting. I asked questions to my waitress about the dishes and I believe she picked up on my cluelessness and led me the right way. On my first visit to Zenebech, the waitress pointed me to the sambusa appetizer. 'Twas banging. and I MEAN that. I'm bout that. I'm bout that, bout that. that sambusa? was also bout that, bout that, bout that. Now, for the entree, I split the Mehaberawi platter. For veggies, only the classics. Not messing around here: gomen (collard greens), tikel gomen (cabbage, carrot, and potato stew), timatim fitfit (chopped onion, tomato, and jalapeno in olive oil), and mesir (chili sauced red lentils). The meats? WE ARE NOT PLAYING AROUND: tibs ferefer, and to be completely honest? cant recall any of the other ones. buts it's fine. we ball. and so did that dish. it balled. However, I did think the dish lacked that trademark Ethipioan spice punch I expect. But I also think they, as many international cuisine restaurants do, knocked the spice back a few kicks to spare my caucasian intestines. And, I must add, that decision did in fact spare my caucasian intestinesNow, I would be lying if I said I haven't had Ethiopian before. I had a great friend in high school whose mother would whip up all types of dishes. With the fresh injera imported from Ethiopia straight to her local orthodox church, this woman made magic with the simplest ingredients. This is something Zenebach does very well. The food is fresh. It punches. It kicks. The tibbs are not chewy. They don't lack that flavor I prefer in my tibbs. The injera is delicious. and don't get me started on them veggies. I have accepted that Ethiopians dominate veggies. So does Zenebach. On my second trip to Zenebach, I wanted to further explore the domain that is vegetarian Ethiopian food. I went with the Veggie Ferfer, chopped injera tossed in a savory chili-peppers sauce with two veggies. I rode with a pair of classics again: gomen and mesir. The injera tasted like a fall-off-the-bone spare rib. The chili-pepper sauce was absolutely bonkers. BONKERS, I tell you. The injera, while holding true to its trademark preforated and spongy texture, danced alongside my veggies and partied in my friggin mouth. was a party. was insane. was like the time madonna and drake made out on stage. Insane.wow. What a review. This? Has been a journey. I hope everyone enjoys Zenebach as much as I do.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is AMAZING! I cannot recommend it enough.
I came twice in one week. Both times we ordered the 10 veggie combo, which is 10 vegetarian dishes and comes with two things of injera on the side. The food was amazing! I especially liked the lentil dishes, the corn dish, the beet dish, and the potato dish. I've came as a party of two the first time and as a party of three the second time and the food was more than enough to feed all of us both times. My partner also ordered the St. George's Lager and really enjoyed it. I got the Ethiopian tea and really enjoyed that as well. The staff at this restaurant are all extremely kind and helpful. Service is great. The prices are extremely reasonable for the quality and quantity of food they are serving. The 10 veggie combo was only 28$ and was enough to feed two or three people. This is my new favorite restaurant in DC and I recommend everyone come here!
Be the first to ReplyA month or so ago, I would have given Zenebech five stars.
We were regulars before the pandemic and when we went back early this spring, they were so happy to see us. The food has always been consistent and the staff wonderful. We went once a week for about two months this spring. And then took a few weeks off before returning. Unfortunately we struggled the last time we went. The server was new and our samosas came out still frozen. They were a bit rude to us but.... Everyone has a bad night. We went back last night and the experience was horrific. We asked for an outside table, we were told we'd get the next one and it would be about twenty minutes. We were also told they wouldn't take our name since they don't take reservations so we couldn't leave the immediate area. That was fine. We waited. And waited. And waited. And as a table became available they came and told us we there were people before us. No one had been there but in a few minutes those people walked back. They hadn't been told to wait. We were furious. Our son was very hungry and we would have gone elsewhere if we'd known we weren't getting the next table. When we did finally get a table it took a long time to place an order but we know the food always comes quickly. Our son has Type 1 diabetes so needs to take a certain amount of insulin in advance of the food he eats. We gave him his insulin and our samosas came out. (A bit cold but not frozen.)And then we waited for our food. After forty minutes (and we have been there a million times and never waited forty minutes) I asked the server were the food was. I explained our son needed to eat soon because of his insulin. She shrugged and said, "I don't know. It's busy."Maybe our expectations were too high because we've always had such positive experiences, but I was furious at how indifferent she was. Ultimately I went in and explained to a much nicer staff person that it had been over forty minutes and my son was okay because he'd had a samosa but that he needed to eat in the next five minutes or it could be a problem and that we would pay for our samosas and go somewhere else. She was shocked we hadnt been served yet. She assumed we'd eaten and I was coming in for the check. She apologized and said it would just be a minute. Our son's food came a few minutes later. Cold!!!!!The rest of the food came a few minutes after that. We learned that they have a new owner and new kitchen staff who, according to the person we spoke with, have no idea what they're doing and there are problems where the computer system doesn't speak to the kitchen. It is SUCH a shame. We loved everyone who worked there. It was a great place for us to go because they knew our kiddo had T1 and always made sure he was taken care of. Just a lovely local restaurant. We're sad they have new management and mostly new staff. We told our kids we'll use this opportunity to try other restaurants in the area because we won't be going back.
Be the first to ReplyWent with my classmates after a conference, it was fast
Went with my classmates after a conference, it was fast service and yummy meats and veggies. My only surprise was the injera (bread) was sort of cold, I expected it to be warmer. So that's the only reason for 4/5! PSA: order the derek tibs (not pictured) for sure!
Be the first to ReplyFirst and last time here.
I've been to Ethiopia so I knew what to expect from Ethiopian cuisine. Service - thumbs down. When we arrived, I told the server it's only two of us, without checking, she right away pointed at the table outdoor and asked us to sit there. It was a chilly day and we preferred dinning in the restaurant instead of sitting outside on the side walk for dinner. I asked if we could sit indoor instead. Then I was told that I had to wait for a "long time" if we wanted a table indoor. So we agreed to sit outdoor. After being seated, I walked inside to use the bathroom and I saw a few empty tables in the restaurant. I asked another server if we could switch our seat from outdoor to indoor. That server said yes we could sit indoor! Why didn't they let us sit indoor at the very first place!? (It was only two minutes after we were told that we had to wait a long time for a table indoor.)Food - meh. We ordered a beef and a fish dish, they both came with injera. The fish was very salty as if it's salted fish. (They didn't mention it's salted fish on the menu, if it really was salted fish.) For the beef dish.. they gave us lamb. I told them I don't eat lamb, I wanted beef. The server asked "are you allergic to lamb?" I thought to myself does it matter whether I am allergic to lamb? I ordered beef and you should have given me beef. I was just asking them to give me what I actually ordered because I simply don't like lamb! Eventually we got the beef dish but it's just ok. Overall, never here again. Will try other Ethiopian restaurants in town though.

Great food and great service! It's a unique dining experience, and it's great for small groups. We loved how reasonable the prices were and how friendly the staff was. I've been twice, and both times I've been impressed. It's a great example of a thriving neighborhood small-business, and I will be coming here for years to come!
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot for Ethiopian fare.
I usually only enjoy home cooked food but this place brings the home cookin to you. Only feedback is, the hold of on the salt. Something's were salty.
Be the first to ReplyI believe a 3.
5 would be a more accurate rating. My partner and I came in on a Sunday evening. It got quite busy; there was one waitress when we arrived, and about halfway through our visit, a second arrived. They were both extremely pleasant and polite, but you could tell that staff is low. We ordered lentils sambusa to start and they were excellent, arguably the best thing we ate. For our main entree, we shared a 10 veggie combo platter with teff injera. For starters, we really love Ethiopian so upon reading many reviews, we were ecstatic to give Zenebech a try. I was a bit underwhelmed with the flavors of our veggie sides. Never thought I'd say this when speaking about Ethiopian eats. I wanted much more spice and overall flavor, and it just didn't quite hit the mark for me. A little bummed as so many spoke so extremely highly of this place. Maybe next time!
Be the first to ReplyThis has become my go-to Ethiopian restaurant since
This has become my go-to Ethiopian restaurant since returning to DC fairly recently. The veggie options are plenty delicious, fairly priced, and close to my home. The clincher is that you can get teff injera, which I didn't know had become such a rarity in my time away. I'm a repeat customer for take-out and will likely continue to be.
Be the first to ReplyThe restaurant felt cozy and authentic.
Servers were nice, polite and quite helpful and patient explaining the menu. We ordered simbosa (veggie/lentils) and the combination platter. Ended up asking for hot sauce as the spiciness was not to the extent we expected, but what a mistake as the spicy sauce crippled me afterwards . The combination platter is tricky as you may not be familiar with all the options. We went with the recommended one. 4 veggie and 4 meat portions. On veggies, I personally didn't care for them expect for one with beets. In the meat side, the chicken one was pretty bland and flavorless but the other ones were good. The bread is very different from one you might have experienced. Try it for sure though. It's a soft spongy tortilla-like version that easily absorbs the wok/stew. Not my favorite but definitely an interesting one to try. If I go back again (which I would for sure), I would study the wok options a lot more so I can get more accurate on the ones I may like more. Definitely get their local beer as it was fantastic and very refreshing with the spicy food.

Was on the Eater 38 beat restaurants and didn't disappoint, unlike last night's mediocre Korean. ย No frills space with incredible food. The kitfo burned my face off and was so flavorful and tasty. Everything else was great, I only wish there were more people dining with me so I could have eaten more. ย The tea was a winner too, no caffeine, cardamom and cinnamon and what not, which was a great alternative to beer.
Be the first to ReplyThe service is horrible.
We went Saturday in the afternoon, and first, we had to wait at the front door for a while until the only "host-server" decided to greet us. Instead, she asked us for the Covid VaccionationCard. We understand that we now need to provide that in DC, and we have no problem with that. However, it was her "tone" and "attitude" asking for the card. We provided the cards then, in a rude way, the waiter asked us for IDs to confirm the card information. Again, it is NOT what they asked for.. it is HOW they ask for this information. We just provided the ids then she literally threw the menus on the table before we sat and went away. We were expecting that at least greet us and ask if we want water like every decent restaurant in the US but not even that. After ten minutes of waiting for the server to come back and at least ask for the standard stuff, we decided to leave the place before ordering. NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL.

I never went here when I lived in DC but was craving Ethiopian on a trip. First, the place is decorated nicely. The order was quick and fast. My friend and I got the 4 meats and 4 veggie platter and everything was delicious. We also got our own injera bread which was nice. The best part was that I was extremely full and it was so cheap- only 13 bucks each! Would definitely come back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food but the worst service in all of Washington DC.
Would never come back here because of the service alone. A single meal took nearly 2 hours to come. We didn't even get to order until we'd been at the restaurant for 30 minutes.

I came here with a friend on a Friday night for an early dinner and sat outside, which was nice. We shared the meat and veggies combo, and it was quite delicious. The injera wasn't too sour and it was light, well complimented the dishes. The meats and veggies were all flavorful but not too heavy. I definitely enjoyed the meal, and it wasn't too costly either at around $26 total post-tax.
Be the first to ReplyWe came her for dinner last night.
I hadn't had Kitfo in so long and theirs was amazing. Generous portion of it.

out of soap in bathroom, which is extra alarming since the soap is next to the all staff must wash hands sign. waitress was rude and sat me at the worst table even though they were almost empty. they were out of stuff, which obvs it's not the staff's fault but it's weird to just be like "we don't have it" in a flat and grumpy tone like i should somehow know they're out of the stuff listed on the menu?? waitress said nothing we she sat my food down. quite literally worst service i've ever had. i felt uneasy eating the food given the no soap in the bathroom situation. the sambusa came with maybe a teaspoons worth of sauce and the meat tasted burnt and flavorless. hoping the staff has access to soap somewhere since it's not in the bathroom and everybody touching the food. i'm not sure if it's always like that but def won't be back given all the other options around
Be the first to ReplyI hate to say it but Zenebech has fell off.
When the location was on Florida Ave I was a frequent visitor, when they moved to Adams Morgan I have gone there atleast 5 times and each time sucked. The first time I went I ordered my food and it came out cold, I politely let the waitress know and she said "It's still good right" smh I let it slide. Subsequently the one chick that works there always seems to work alone but doesn't work efficiently at all, and when she eventually comes to your table and your place an order while actually pointing at the items she STILL f**s up the order smh and she was writing it down smh This has happened more than once. I will not be returning unfortunately.

We tried this place for the first time and it was such a great experience. No reservations so make sure you plan ahead and expect to wait a bit to be seated. It gets pretty busy in the evening but it's worth the wait for the experience. They have a variety of unique meals, but we did the combo which gave us several different dishes to try. They have plenty of spicy options and some not so spicey so there's plenty to try for everyone. Their sambusa appetizer is amazing! They also have an Ethiopian honey wine and beers to try. Definitely try them to get the whole experience. Staff and ambiance are both great!
