A speakeasy-style experience
4 Charles Prime Steakhouse in New York City is a must-visit spot, whether you're out with friends or on a special date. The moment you step inside, you're transported to a speakeasy-style setting, complete with dim lighting and a lively, cozy atmosphere. The service is attentive but relaxed, adding to the fun vibe. I ordered the American Cheeseburger, which came with a playful show by the waiter—definitely worth capturing on video. I recommend adding an egg and bacon for an even more indulgent experience. The desserts, particularly the Lemon Meringue Pie and Chocolate Cream Pie, are irresistible, even when you're feeling full. To ensure a table, make a reservation well in advance, as this spot is in high demand. The intimate basement dining room and top-notch service make it a unique find. The steak, particularly the Wagyu New York Strip, is phenomenal—perfectly cooked and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The classic cocktails are crafted with precision, adding to the overall charm. If you're in NYC and seeking a memorable dining experience, 4 Charles Prime should be at the top of your list. Tip: Getting reservations here is almost impossible so instead of giving up on our dreams, we wait in line 30 minutes BEFORE they open

This is a very dark, intimate, cozy place. If you have reservations for a certain time, make sure you are there precisely at that time as there is no sitting area in the restaurant nor a bar. There are 9 tables that seat approximately 34 people which is probably why the reservations are so difficult. We had a soup to nuts dinner which took slightly more than 2 hours. Dress code is very relaxed, and we saw people with jeans and T shirts although a collared shirt would make a guy feel better. Service was terrific and friendly throughout the experience. We shared everything. The sizzling garlic shrimp appetizer was delicious, especially with the wonderful, toasted bread with which we dunked into that tasty garlic sauce. We also ordered the bacon which came as strips looking like sausage. Not bad but not nearly as good as that served at Lugers or Wolfgangs. One in our party was not a meat eater and ordered the King salmon, which she loved. We ordered 2 King cuts of the Prime rib for the remaining 3 of us. These were massive hunks of beef at least 2 inches thick and, thankfully, they were cut into chunks and left on the bone. They came with rock salt and horseradish cream. The meat was perfectly cooked and very tender, quite good, indeed. We had sides of corn (exceptional) mashed potatoes and fries, all good. We ate and ate and still took home a full dinner's worth of meat. We had a very good coffee and some desserts. Our Lemon Meringue pie was at least 12 inches high, and very good. We had a few drinks and a beer with dinner. The whole thing for 4 people, with 20% tip & tax was $371 per couple. We saw a few tables ordering the massive burger which the waiter cut into 4 pieces, 1 for each person. They then shared one steak and some sides among them. Probably something we might do as their burgers are famous.

I ate here with a group of 4 people and we all agreed - not a 5 star experience. The food was good, but not quite great, and overpriced by a large margin for what is what (average price per plate = $40). I got the Truffle Omelet, which I think was the only vegetarian option on the menu, and it was good but it was a heavy, oily dish. The rest of the table got the burgers (verdict: overhyped and also heavy), the fries (pretty delicious), and the French Onion Sandwich (good). If the price was 2/3 of what it was, I might go back, but probably wouldn't go back.

I was so excited when I finally snagged a much-coveted res to St. Charles, and my expectations were exceeded! The ambience oozes charm and class - it’s hard to put into words how cozy and lovely it is in there. Our server Brandon was incredible - one of the best servers I’ve ever had. We got the burger, French dip, fries, creamed spinach, and truffle mac and cheese. My favorites were probably the burger and creamed spinach. Chocolate cream pie was also top notch. I was probably close to the fullest I’ve ever been after this meal, but it was worth all the calories and dent in my wallet.

I don’t have the patience or real desire to snag a reservation here. Limited sitting and high demand makes it coveted as the shiny new object among the foodie elite. I had Chase reward miles that I cashed in here for a free takeout meal. Food was delicious. No complaints. Be the first to ReplyUnbelievable Dinner
One of the best meals I’ve ever had, and I’ve been fortunate enough to dine in some of the world’s best. Seriously. Quaint is how I’d describe the atmosphere - dark, rich and cozy. Service was impeccable. The food, though, was the highlight. Known for the prime rib (which was great), but the sides were absolutely amazing. Truffle mac&cheese, best mushroom dish I’ve ever tasted, and even the creamed spinach was fantastic. Cocktails were Devine as well. Overall, 10 out of 10. Highly, highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyVery good but not great
I came back for the burger a few months after my previous review and while very good, I'm not sure if it was worth the hassle of getting a reservation and the price of it. I think going to their sister restaurant, Au Cheval for burgers is probably a better option.
Be the first to ReplyNot great but still very good
I wanted to love it but in the end it was very good but not great. I had the "4 Charles cut" Prime Rib, which I assumed would be their best dish. It was good but missing something. It was also just a little too cool and not as flavorful as I hoped. Very good but for the price being charged, it should have been the best. What was great was the cream spinach - crispy melted cheese on top and a nice rich creamy sauce. Definitely worth it! Service was excellent and it's got a cool fun atmosphere. I hear the burgers are also great and I may go back for them but probably a pass on the prime rib.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible Lunch
Had a remarkable and memorable dining experience today at this fine lower Manhattan restaurant We dined on Little Gem Salad, fresh, great taste looked great when served, Hash browns, absolutely excellent with the garlic aioli, Prime Rib French Dip absolutely incredible, the best I've ever had and 10oz Double Wagyu Cheeseburger, really excellent with the bacon, Truffle Omelette which was outstanding. Drinks were delicious and service was very attentive. While it was a bit expensive almost $100/ pp it's in line with NYC prices and not over the top for the dining experience. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a memorable NYC dining experience for friends and family.
Be the first to ReplyA memorable experience.
I’ve not had a better dinning experience. The food and service were on point. We were able to order quite a few things to share amongst our group off the menu. Everything was delicious. Best burger I’ve ever had in my life. Small and difficult to get a reservation to but worth the efforts.

Burger as a starter? Wow! I’m not a burger eater but sharing this burger with the rest of my table was hard. If I’d known before we ordered I’d have had a whole one to myself for main. A triumph. Steak and sides also phenomenal but the pudding, so pretty and very yummy

Must Go. Best burger you will ever have plus really special ambience and service. The fries are really crisp and the burger is one of a kind.

Delicious! I wanted to treat my son to an excellent dinner, Prime Catch did not disappoint
He has a filet mignon, it was large and very well prepared
I ordered the lobster and avocado appetizer
The Cosmos were delicious
Outstanding food, drinks and experience!
We took our son to 4 Charles Prime for his birthday. The food is outstanding! The prime rib was so tender and the best we have ever had. Similarly the hamburger was amazing. The steak was good but not as special as the prime rib and burger. Both the mash potatoes and mac and cheese were excellent too. The drinks were amazing as well. Both the crab cakes and fresh oysters were excellent. Finally the Lemon meringue pic was the best we have ever had as well. The service could not have been more attentive and pleasant. They made our son feel special on his birthday. We have eaten out all over the world 4 Charles Prime Rib stands out as outstanding!
Be the first to ReplyBest Prime Rib in Town
Tough table, but worth it. Old school supper club atmosphere backed by top notch food and drinks. Gracious staff and killer martinis. Go for the 4 Charles cut prime rib all the way. Also the best bacon in town, and great burger & French dip too. This place is faultless.

The burger and the shaved prime rib sandwich are amazing. Reservation are a hassle but the wait it’s worth!
Be the first to ReplyNew Favorite in NYC!!!
What a perfect place for a quiet celebratory dinner! My wife checked with her NYC peeps when we heard about Peter Luger’s issues, and every one of them recommended this place. Hard to get in because there are literally only 10-12 tables in this underground, speakeasy type restaurant, but our persistence was well worth it. Prime rib was the best I’ve had, and the truffle mac&cheese was incredible. Wife had the French dip sandwich and it was amazing, too. Great atmosphere and even better service. Not cheap, but you won’t go away hungry and you’ll be very happy you tried it.
