Alex Dilling at Hotel Café Royal London Reviews from The Last Year
A Culinary Journey Worth Savouring
Our recent dining experience at Alex Dilling's restaurant was nothing short of extraordinary. The ambiance of the restaurant was elegant yet inviting, creating the perfect atmosphere for a memorable lunch. The attention to detail in every aspect of the dining experience was evident, from the impeccable service to the exquisite presentation of each dish. From the delicate canapes to the perfectly presented mains, each dish bursting with flavour and creativity. A special mention must be made for the sommelier, whose expert wine pairings enhanced the flavours of each course and elevated the dining experience to new heights, and the restaurant manager for his professionalism and kindness.
Very enjoyable experience
I’ve been to quite a few one star restaurants, but this was the first time visiting a two star, and so I was particularly interested to see if a noticeable difference in quality exists. We went for the seven course tasting menu and one of the cheaper bottles of wine. Overall, this came out at just over GBP 300 per head, including the rather keenly priced 15% service charge. Their website contains a sample menu, but apparently the actual menu changes multiple times each week, so the dishes on offer may be somewhat different. I enjoyed all of the seven courses, including the canapés and petit fours. The best course was probably the main fish dish (turbot). Based on this experience, the main difference between a one and two star seems to be the consistency of each of the courses. There wasn’t a bad course here compared to a one star where there’s usually a couple of mediocre courses. The dishes themselves were slightly more intricate and innovative but not massively so. My only criticisms would be that the duck dish (whilst excellent) could really do with some potato or vegetables as an accompaniment. With just the foie gras as an accompaniment , the dish is too rich. Also the butter for the bread was served cold and so was hard to spread. The waiter and sommelier are a real credit to the restaurant. I liked the fact that they were highly professional and efficient throughout, but the service was warm at the same time and they were happy to chat which really enhanced the meal, My wide enjoyed the restaurant’s decor, especially the wall paper for some reason.
Elegance personified
We were here to entertain clients and loved the elegant surroundings. The staff were completely on point from the very start and provided a friendly but truly excellent service showing real understanding for the food and beverages they serve The quality of the ingredients was outstanding and they were served beautifully, each dish unfolding new flavours to delight the palette. The whole menu was superb but my stand out was the first course on our menu, sea bream and smoked eel.. just beautiful A perfect location to impress
Festival of Sauces.
Lunch this Saturday. Been several times. Therefore, I know the restaurant quite well now. Amongst the top 5 restaurants in London at the moment. Everything is elegant & refined about the chef’s cuisine: the tastes, the visuals. Just everything. And that day, I had several dishes, each with different sauces obviously. Everybody -almost-can cook (cuire) a duck, rose, well done etc..., a fish pretty well. When it comes to sauces, that’s’ another story. Hence the reasons why many restaurants have almost given up on sauces: it requires skills, time (lots), money and attentive staff (in French there is even an official term in cuisines for a staff that destroys a sauce: un “gate-sauces”!) . A good sauce does not come cheap if you do a proper cost analysis. This cuisinier clearly loves sauces as much as Escoffier or Alleno and the sauces here are superb! Negatives? The music, they can do better. Please find the music that defines this restaurant and stick to it! Desserts are good but way too classic and could find a new direction imo.
A must try!
From arrival, until leaving, the staff were extremely friendly, courteous, informative, professional...but never over the top (as can be the case sometimes in similar starred restaurants). The food we found to be inventive and full of magnificent flavours and textures. A treat to the eyes and palate alike. The wine paired for us was delightful and the sommelier gave us information we asked for, freely. Have awarded 5 stars without hesitation.
Amazing time
Incredible place from the entrance of the hotel to the table Staff of the restaurant was amazingly professional and looking after us, Food was outstanding, the creativity, taste, presentation, choose of products… The fallowing of the dishes was really matching I really recommend this restaurant For me one of the 2 best restaurants I did in the world and I’m use to lot of Michelin stared restaurant
Not as good as it should be for a 2 star Michelin...,
Some aspects were great....others not so great. The great - some of the food is superb The not so great - did not have the pescatarian menu available but was able to get some fish on to the vegeterian menu. The vegetarian main - vol au vent with egg yolk - was very disappointing. As you can only have the tasting menu it's a shame that they don't offer a complete vegetarian and a complete pescatarian menu. Also, oddly, no indication of which wines you get with the 3 wine pairing options. Tables are quite close together (surprisingly). Servce mostly good but a few misses.
Amazing experience
This was our family’s first experience at a Michelin starred restaurant. We are foodies but somewhat intimidated by the level of formality and service. The staff here produced beautiful, delicious plates and did a good job of putting us at ease. Lovely wine recommendation and lots of little “extra” touches throughout the meal. A lovely end to our time in London.
Amazing
Amazing place** worth to wist service is outstanding and the food is unbelievable specially the dessert was most probably the best dessert I ever eaten.
Very Good First Visit
A first visit to Alex Dilling at the Café Royal which is perched on the first floor of one corner of the hotel overlooking Regents Street on one side and the passage way into Air Street on the other. It's a suitably intimate space with just 34 covers, but I'm not particularly fond of the mirrored ceiling, it reminds me of a dodgy bedroom! The welcome is very good and it's all suitably friendly and personable. Efficient too with the earlier guests (as we were) provided with extras like being presented with a sample of the uncooked Wagyu Beef to admire, it's one of the two main options. Also, Chef Alex Dilling himself came and served the first course personally, placing a quenelle of caviar on the dish, although as service became busier, both these features stopped for later guests. There was just the seven course tasting menu at dinner consisting of: Cornish crab "Grenobloise", Pâte De Campagne with a beautiful accompanying olive bread, Oak smoked salmon with girolles, Blue lobster with Cornish squid and Thai basil. Bresse pigeon with Pea à la française, Gariguette strawberry cheesecake and Tainori chocolate to finish. After some lovely canapés and a selection of great breads, each course arrived looking extremely pretty on the plate with the standouts for me being the Oak smoked salmon with gorgeous beurre blanc sauce. The salmon was like butter and extremely indulgent with a smoked flavour throughout. Very delicious, as was the Pigeon which was served with pea à la française, stunning dish, packed with flavour and the third Michelin starred version of pigeon in a few weeks. This was the best for sure. My least favourites would be the Cornish crab grenobloise which was difficult to discern, albeit masked by a generous amount of caviar, but the hard cracker didn't help the dish. Sadly, the dessert wasn't to my liking either. I ate it but it consisted of three different flavoured chocolate spheres covered in a cream and sorbet. The textures weren't to my liking and the cream seamed to be curdled or was curdling. It wasn't that flavoursome either. Service was very good but having been to Le Gavroche last week, there are distinct differences, which if I'm honest, I prefer at the old Mayfair Grande Dame. Having said all that, it was a very good meal with some great highlights and with seven courses (£175), English Sparking wine, wine, water, tea and tip, the bill came to a very reasonable £317 a head. Definitely worth a visit and will be back for sure.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Appointment
I was waiting on the transfer for name but it hasn’t happened yet and my reservation is tonight , will it be an issue that is hasn’t changed into my name yet
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Just got scammed!
Thats unfortunate but you can always get your money back if they cancel the reservation.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
