The first time for lunch to try their pastrami on rye and corned beef as well as their deli pickles at the recommendation of the Michelin Guide and the second time for Saturday morning breakfast to try their bagel and lox. I'll say right off the bat that their pastrami and corned beef was just okay by NYC standards and while better than most you would probably get from outside NYC it wasn't nearly as fresh or flavorful as other storied Jewish delis in the city serving up hot pastrami and corned beef like Katz's where there seems to be higher turnover and you literally get your meat piping hot out of the cooker. I probably wouldn't come back to Barney Greengrass seeking a pastrami on rye again now that I've tried it. As for the bagel & lox this is a solid choice without a doubt. Their smoked Nova Scotia salmon sliced fresh in front of you is phenomenal and their bagels they put it on stand up pretty well too. I ordered mine on a plain bagel with plain cream cheese, capers, tomato and onion and I enjoyed every bite. Barney Greengrass and Russ & Daughters on the lower east side seem to be the two spots that always get listed as the best spots for bagel & lox in NYC and they both are pretty comparable to each other. I would definitely be back to either when craving a bagel & lox sandwich. I would visit with the expectation that you will be taking your order to go as there are limited tables here and it's tough to say how busy it will be when you go, though I did visit during an off time for lunch around 3 pm and the tables were mostly empty except for mine and one other. If you're looking for an old school iconic NYC establishment to try this is a good choice as they have been open since 1908 and their space looks very historic and old school. They have a weird policy where they accept credit cards on weekdays and then on weekends they are cash only so definitely take note of that.
