We were show to the middle of a long table, with groups at both ends. Since I was not able to hear my partner talk to me and cannot lipread yet, we asked to be moved to the bar, and the waitress duly complied. I wonder why they cram people on these long tables when half the restaurant is empty? It might have been cool for some people before the pandemic but rubbing shoulders with total strangers is no longer my idea of fun, especially when this is more a stylistic choice rather than a necessity.
The menu is quite short, and we did not see the alleged Basque influence. I understand that the menu changes frequently though, so maybe it is the case on some days.
The cocktails are served in very small glasses, out of a doll house, so we decided to skip them altogether. We ordered wine instead, but while we were discussing options with the sommelière, the first appetiser arrived. The waitress, rather than go back to the kitchen and keep it warm, decided to squeeze herself in between us and drop the load. This was an unfortunate decision, and even more so since the appetiser arrived rather cold (a crab soup with mussels). The lambchop was cooked well but rather bland, and the crab toast even blander. The sirloin steak was very good but eye wateringly expensive.
The pub-like décor is alright but nothing to write home about. No tablecloths. Service can be attentive or aloof, depending on the person, and although there are lots of them, there seems to be little organisation.
We won’t hurry back, since one can reasonably expect more from a Michelin starred restaurant.
