My wife and I recently enjoyed an indulgent New Year’s Eve menu at Caviar Russe. First, the environment at Caviar Russe with gorgeous painted murals on the walls of the smallish main dining room with windows overlooking Madison Avenue is luxurious, refined, and beautiful. We were seated in one of the three plush crescent-shaped booths walking in on the right, which made for a comfortable setting to enjoy our evening. The decadence began with each of us getting 50 grams of Gold Osetra caviar along with a supplemental 125 grams of Sevruga caviar to share. The caviar was beautifully presented and served with crème fraiche, chives, potato slices, fresh made blini, toast points, and warm house made potato latkes. The caviar was exceptional. Following the caviar service, house made breads with three different butters (onion, caviar, and cranberry-walnut) were offered – the olive loaf with the different butters was delicious. Moving into the menu proper, we were then treated to a sensational tuna tartare topped with a generous portion of Osetra caviar in a mouthwatering soy-type sauce – just exquisite flavors. Next, a sphere of rich and delicious jelly encased foie gras topped with a nice mound of Burgundian black winter truffles resting on a bed of Sicilian pistachios served with freshly made toasted brioche – just wonderful. Then, a poached egg, topped with a nice portion of caviar in an absolutely sensational creamy parmesan sauce. Followed by tagliatelle pasta with an incredibly generous portion of freshly shaved white Alba winter truffles (the pasta was a tad undercooked, albeit the Alba truffles were exceptional). The final savory course was Dover sole presented and then deboned tableside, also topped with ample freshly shaved white Alba truffles personally shaved by the chef at the table. The dessert was a delicious chocolate ganache cake served with ice cream. Petit fours were also presented. We enjoyed the whole meal with free-flowing Dom Perignon blanc and then a glass of Dom Perignon rose poured to ring in the New Year. Certainly a pricey evening, but the high quality of the sumptuous food and the overall experience made it well worthwhile.
